LEGACY sequels often miss the mark, but The Naked Gun lands a perfect punchline. Directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane, the film revives the iconic slapstick action-comedy franchise three decades after its last outing. This time, the chaos is inherited by Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., played by Liam Neeson, whose deadpan delivery surprisingly fits like a glove in a genre known for absurdity. The film embraces its roots unapologetically, proving that slapstick humour and parody still have a place in modern cinema.
From the opening gag to its final ridiculous twist, The Naked Gun thrives on visual comedy, absurd dialogue and over-the-top action. Rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel, the film keeps the same chaotic energy that made the original trilogy a cult classic, while giving it a modern polish. It is a rare case where a spoof sequel not only works but feels necessary.
Humour that pushes boundaries
The Naked Gun is a film that revels in stepping over the line. The humour is brash, politically incorrect at times and intentionally exaggerated, exactly as a spoof should be. Some jokes may ruffle feathers, but the movie makes no apologies for its approach. It is self-aware, constantly winking at its audience while firing off jokes at a rapid pace.
For longtime fans of the franchise, the comedy feels like a natural continuation. For newcomers, it is a crash course in slapstick done right. The film encourages audiences to drop their guard, forget the rules of serious cinema and just laugh. It is a reminder that sometimes, movies are best enjoyed when they are not dissected for deeper meaning but embraced for their ridiculous fun.
Cast that brings the absurd to life
The casting of Neeson as Lt. Frank initially raises eyebrows, but the veteran actor leans fully into the role. Known for his intense action personas, Neeson hilariously plays against type, delivering punchlines with a perfectly straight face while navigating one ludicrous scenario after another.
Pamela Anderson shines as Beth Davenport, bringing a surprising mix of classic bombshell charm and sharp comedic timing. Paul Walter Hauser, as Capt. Ed Hocken Jr., delivers scene-stealing moments, embodying the lovable incompetence the franchise is known for. Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder and Liza Koshy round out a supporting cast that elevates every absurd moment with total commitment. Even the cameos, from Busta Rhymes to Dave Bautista, feel like part of the fun rather than cheap distractions.
The chemistry among the ensemble is key. Each actor understands the assignment: keep a straight face while everything around them spirals into comedic chaos. That commitment makes the humour land even harder.
Action, gags, nostalgia
Action sequences in The Naked Gun are gloriously overblown, with Neeson performing exaggerated stunts that would make his Taken character blush. Yet, the film smartly balances slapstick with nostalgia, sprinkling in nods to the late Leslie Nielsen's iconic portrayal of Frank Drebin Sr. These moments are heartfelt tributes rather than forced callbacks, allowing longtime fans to feel the connection without overshadowing the new story.
Visual gags remain the franchise's bread and butter, from background antics to blink-and-you-miss-it jokes that reward attentive viewers. The direction by Schaffer ensures that even the silliest moments are sharply executed, never veering into lazy parody. The result is a spoof that feels crafted with genuine love for the source material.
Perfect movie to unwind with
While comedies today often chase shock value or overly clever satire, The Naked Gun strips everything down to pure, ridiculous fun. It is the kind of movie designed to be enjoyed with popcorn in hand and expectations set to 'laugh first, think later'.
Not every joke will land for everyone and some might find certain bits too bold or outdated in tone. But that is part of the charm. The film does not aim to please every sensibility, it aims to entertain without restraint, just like the originals did. In an era that often takes itself too seriously, this movie offers a much-needed comedic escape.
Triumph of modern spoof cinema
The Naked Gun proves that spoofs are far from dead. With Schaffer's sharp direction, MacFarlane's comedic touch and a fearless cast led by Neeson, the film captures the outrageous spirit of the franchise while making it accessible to a new generation.
It is brash, ridiculous and gloriously over-the-top, a spoof done right. For fans of the originals, it is a heartfelt revival that does justice to Nielsen's legacy. For newcomers, it is a gateway to a style of comedy rarely seen today.
Some viewers may leave feeling offended, others may be crying with laughter, but one thing is certain: The Naked Gun is the most fun anyone will have not taking anything seriously this year.

Abu Shaef Hamza makes emotional return to KL Fashion Week with ‘Jaan', a tribute to life, loss and legacy

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Fashion stylist to the stars Abu Shaef Hamza brought a deeply personal touch to the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) 2025 runway over the weekend, unveiling 'Jaan', a collection he described as a joyful ode to heritage and legacy. Presented on the penultimate day of the annual fashion showcase, the runway presentation was created in collaboration with Bahadur Couture and fashion stylist Yogash Global, drawing on the rich tapestries of Indian culture and inspired by Abu's paternal heritage. The show opened with singer Mimifly's stirring performance of 'Angkat', setting the tone for a series of striking black ensembles — a solemn tribute to death, the past and unspoken grief. Abu, in a statement released after the show, said the structured silhouettes symbolised the finality of endings and the weight of ancestral memories. From darkness, the collection moved into light, shifting into bridal whites, creams and celebratory hues inspired by weddings and rituals. 'Jaan' is described as a joyful ode to heritage and legacy. This segment, marked by a Bharatanatyam dance interlude, reimagined conventional traditions in modern silhouettes, evoking the scent of jasmine, the beat of drums and the glow of festive gatherings. The final phase embraced sleek, futuristic designs, flowing fabrics and experimental craftsmanship to represent rebirth and renewal. A vibrant finale of colours closed the show, symbolising hope and the continuation of legacy. ''Jaan' intertwines love and life, making it a joyful ode to heritage and legacy, reimagined for all who love fashion,' said Abu, who is showing at KLFW for the third consecutive year. A solemn tribute to death, the past and unspoken grief. The presentation was supported by partners Bahadur Couture and Yogash Global, with sponsorship from brands including Pandora, Jakel, Komono, TimeZone, Legendary Car Rental, Choctop and Christy Ng. Abu, who began sharing his work on Instagram in 2012, has built an international portfolio with styling projects in Australia, London, Taiwan and Italy. Known for his personal styling concepts and narrative-driven fashion, the Malaysian stylist has become a regular presence at major fashion events, including Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week.

Pamela Anderson: 'Yes, Sylvester Stallone tried to seduce me with a Porsche'

Canadian-US actress Pamela Anderson revealed Stallone's offer in her 2023 Netflix documentary, 'Pamela, A Love Story'. Photo: AFP Pamela Anderson has hit back at Sylvester Stallone for denying her claim that he once tried to woo her and make her his 'No. 1 girl' by offering to buy her a condo and a Porsche. Anderson stuck to her story about Stallone while appearing on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen Sunday. Seated next to her new boyfriend, Liam Neeson, her co-star in the cop-drama spoof The Naked Gun , Anderson played along with Cohen's game in which the host asked her to respond to media reports about her. Cohen explained that Anderson, 58, revealed Stallone's offer in her 2023 Netflix documentary, Pamela, A Love Story . As Anderson nodded, Cohen then said Stallone, 79, allegedly asked the former Baywatch star to be his 'No. 1 girl' in exchange for buying her a condo and a luxury sports car. In her documentary, Anderson also had said she rejected Stallone's offer by quipping: 'Does that mean there's a No. 2 girl?' Stallone allegedly replied to her rejection by saying: 'That's the best offer you're gonna get, honey. You're in Hollywood now.' Cohen then asked Anderson: 'What was your reaction to Stallone coming out after the doc was released and saying this was a falsehood?' Anderson laughed, shook her head, rolled her eyes said, 'Well, how could you make that up? You know?' 'Right!' Cohen replied, as Anderson looked to Neeson, then laughed again and said, 'That was pretty specific.' Cohen then asked Anderson whether there was a 'different car' that might have changed her mind about dating the Rocky legend. 'Maybe, like, a Shelby Cobra,' Anderson joked, before repeating 'no' several times. Neeson, meanwhile, laughed along before admitting to Cohen that he was yet to offer his new girlfriend a car. And while Anderson said she turned down action-star Stallone's affair offer, it was reported last week that she and Neeson, a late-career action star with the Taken movies, are dating. Indeed, their affection for each other was pretty evident on Cohen's show as the Irish actor reached out to touch Anderson's shoulder, and she sweetly patted his hand. A source told Us Weekly that Anderson and Neeson 'always had chemistry while they were filming The Naked Gun , and their friendship naturally developed into more.' This source also said the new couple are 'learning how to navigate (a romance) together' as they continue their whirlwind publicity tour for The Naked Gun , a reboot of the hit comedy franchise from the late 1980s and early 1990s. 'They are both shy and have tried to stay private, but the spark between them is obvious,' the source added. It was reported last week that Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are dating. Photo: Reuters Meanwhile, Stallone's representative was adamant in denying Anderson's claims that he tried to buy her love and attention. 'The statement from Pamela Anderson attributed to my client is false and fabricated,' the rep said in a statement in 2023. 'Mr Stallone confirms that he never made any portion of that statement.' – Mercury News/Tribune News Service
