Lone coach to leave Indiana football has a top quarterback leading UCLA offense, future IU opponent
The 36 year old was hired by UCLA coach Deshaun Foster to rebuild an offense that ranked 16th out of 18 Big Ten teams last season in scoring offense (18.4 points per game), 14th in total offense (328.8 yards per game) and 18th in rushing offense (86.6 yards).
While Sunseri is a first-time coordinator, he didn't have any issues winning over the Bruins' locker room.
"We saw what happened at Indiana and he was the co-offensive coordinator there,' UCLA offensive lineman Garrett DiGiorgio said at Big Ten media days. 'Seeing those stats, I wasn't too worried about him coming over. They speak for themselves, but he's also come in with a strong will."
The former Pitt quarterback jumped into coaching after a stint in the CFL. He was a fast riser in the profession thanks to a gig as a graduate assistant for Nick Saban at Alabama. Indiana coach Curt Cignetti gave Sunseri his first assistant coach job in 2021 as James Madison's quarterbacks coach.
Foster's connection with Sunseri predates all of that.
'His dad (Sal) was my defensive line coach in Carolina, I've known Tino since he was 11 or 12,' Foster said. 'Seeing how he's evolved as a coach resonated, this is somebody I want to get on staff."
Foster got to see the end result of that evolution when IU made the trip out to the Rose Bowl for a Week 3 game against the Bruins last season. The Hoosiers won 42-13 while putting up 430 total yards of offense.
Former Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke threw for 307 yards (25 of 33) with four touchdowns. Rourke went on to put up 3,000-plus yards while setting IU's single-season record for passing touchdowns (29).
Foster cited Sunseri's successful track record working with transfer quarterbacks from Todd Centeio (2022) to Jordan McCloud (2023) to Rourke as a key reason he targeted him to run UCLA's offense.
'That's what we are really excited about, that he's taking guys in one year and completely flipped it upside down,' Foster said. "We're looking forward to that."
Sunseri will put those skills to the test this year working with Nico Iamaleava, a Tennessee transfer who will likely be one-and-done at the school given his NFL aspirations. The former Vols quarterback put up 2,974 total yards of offense last season (2,616 passing) with 22 total touchdowns while leading the team to the College Football Playoff.
The Bruins completed spring practice under the assumption that Joey Aguilar was the team's presumed starter, but that plan went out the window the minute Iamaleava became available.
'Man, I wanted to go play for him the first day I met him,' Iamaleava said. 'I felt that comfortable, he just has that certain presence to him."
Indiana fans will get an up-close look at the Sunseri-Iamaleava pairing Oct. 25 when UCLA visits Bloomington for the first time.
"Coach Tino brings everything to the table,' Iamaleava said on Big Ten Network. 'I think he truly has an everything offense in his playbook and I'm excited to be a part of it.'

Notre Dame loses TE Kevin Bauman and RB Kedren Young to season-ending knee injuries
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame announced Saturday that sixth-year tight end Kevin Bauman and second-year running back Kedren Young suffered season-ending knee injuries in practice this week. Notre Dame already was without Charles Jagusah, its projected right guard, after he was injured in a utility task vehicle accident in Wyoming last month. Jagusah had surgery to repair a broken humerus bone in his left arm, and coach Marcus Freeman said last week he's hopeful Jagusah will play this season. But Bauman won't play this year because of an articular cartilage injury in his left knee, which will require surgery. He also announced on social media this is the end of his football career. 'Unfortunately, I have suffered yet another season-ending injury. I have been struggling to let it all soak in,' Baumann wrote on Instagram. 'I have taken a few days and prayed about it. While my football journey has come to an end, I can confidently say the rest of my life is just getting started.' Bauman had his 2021 cut short because of an injury, missed all but three games in 2022 and all of 2023 because of injuries. He appeared in all 14 games last season and was expected to play a more significant role this season after Mitchell Evans was selected in the fifth round of April's NFL draft. He caught six passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. 'Notre Dame means everything to me: opportunity, growth, resilience,' Bauman wrote. 'I have made incredible connections and, most importantly, I have grown my faith to the strongest it has ever been. This place is so special.' Tight end Cooper Flanagan also is being held out of practice as he continues to recover from an injured Achilles tendon, which he suffered against Georgia during Notre Dame's playoff run. Freeman said he's optimistic about Flanagan returning this year. Young's career was just getting started when he tore anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee this week. The former Texas prep star rushed for 116 yards in seven games last season with the Fighting Irish. He was expected to add depth to an already stacked backfield. Young broke Lufkin High School's career rushing record before arriving at Notre Dame. The Irish open their season Aug. 31 at Miami. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and

Georgia football scheduled to play five ranked opponents
The Georgia Bulldogs are scheduled to play against five ranked opponents during the 2025 college football season. Georgia will also play two other teams that received votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart don't have to face a grueling road schedule like they did in 2024, but UGA will play a lot of tough games at home, which is expected to put Georgia's 31-game (nation's longest) home winning streak in jeopardy. Georgia begins the 2025 campaign with games against two non-Power Four opponents in Marshall (Aug. 30) and Austin Peay (Sept. 6). The Dawgs will then face nine Power Four opponents over the final 10 weeks of the regular season. Seven of Georgia's nine Power Four opponents received votes in the preseason Coaches Poll, but only five received enough votes to be ranked. Both Auburn (50 votes) and Georgia Tech (27 votes) received among the top 40 most votes in the poll. Every ranked opponent on Georgia's schedule No. 18 Tennessee Volunteers (Sept. 13) Georgia plays Tennessee in the Bulldogs' first road game of the season. The Georgia-Tennessee game will be the first SEC game for both teams. Both Georgia and Tennessee made the College Football Playoff last season and are breaking in new starting quarterbacks. Tennessee is the only ranked opponent (in the preseason poll) Georgia has to play on the road all season. No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide (Sept. 27) Georgia will look to change its fortune against Alabama. Both Georgia and Alabama have bye weeks ahead of their critical matchup in Week 5. Georgia will look to snap its losing streak against Alabama in front of a big crowd at Sanford Stadium. No. 15 Ole Miss Rebels (Oct. 18) Ole Miss dominated Georgia in 2024 and the Bulldogs will look to return the favor in 2025. Ole Miss lost a lot of talent to the 2025 NFL draft, but Lane Kiffin and company reloaded via the transfer portal. This should be a fun one in Athens. No. 17 Florida Gators (Nov. 1) Georgia meets Florida in Jacksonville after both teams have bye weeks. The Gators have one of the toughest schedules in the country, but have been slowly closing the gap on Georgia in recent years. Will Florida be able to beat Georgia for the first time since 2020? We'll find out in early November. No. 1 Texas Longhorns (Nov. 15) QB Arch Manning and Texas roll into Athens looking to get the better of Georgia after going 0-2 against the Dawgs in 2024. Texas will be making its first ever trip to Georgia as a member of the SEC and looks like a national championship contender. Follow UGAWire on Instagram or Threads!
