'So Good To Watch': Kevin Pietersen Hails KL Rahul After His Sensational Century

News1818-05-2025

Kevin Pietersen lauded KL Rahul's century that came in at a crucial period for Delhi Capitals but the Englishman remains wary of the threat GT poses in this match.
Delhi Capitals' mentor, Kevin Pietersen, hailed KL Rahul's sensational knock against the Gujarat Titans as he scored his century at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday.
Pietersen expressed how the side finds themselves in a precarious position, considering that their start in the league as they won five out of the first six games of the season and were well on track in the playoff race.
'It's tough sitting and watching the boys, especially in the pressure situation we got into ourselves. We started well, got into a wobble, but the break must've done good for us," Pietersen commented during the mid-innings break.
Speaking on promoting KL Rahul, the Englishman revealed that it was a move that the senior Indian player wanted to make and he was able to make a big impact as well with his century coming in at a crucial period in DC's campaign as they went on to set a target of 200 runs.

'KL wanted to bat at the top of the order, and he's so good to watch when in full flow. When you can see players of that quality, watch them practice and then watch them put on a show during the match, it's good to see," said Pietersen.
Despite Rahul's sensational knock, Pietersen remains wary of the threat GT poses especially with their in-form top-order trio of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler who could derail DC's chances of taking the two points.
'It's just half the job done though, the top-3 have done a superb job (for Gujarat Titans), but we've Mustafizur, who joined us this morning, and Nattu (T Natarajan) as well back from injury. We spoke about getting a solid start; we were poor in that over the last few overs, and we then solidified during the middle overs before exploding towards the end. 200 I think is a good target," he added.
DC will be desperate to take the win, as losing out in this match will ensure that the likes of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings and GT secure their playoff spots. Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, will still be in the hunt but will require wins by big margins to ensure their net run-rate increases as required to put them in with a shot.

Arshdeep back in Kent, focussing on red-ball rhythm ahead of England Test series

London, Jun 10 (PTI) India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is delighted to be back in Kent where he had earlier played county cricket as he looks to rediscover his red-ball rhythm ahead of the five-match Test series against England beginning June 20. The 26-year-old is eyeing his maiden Test appearance after being named in the Indian squad. The team is playing a four-day tour match against India A at the Kent County Cricket Ground at Beckenham from June 13. Primarily known for his white-ball exploits, Arshdeep, who represented Kent in the County Championship two years ago, had a notable season in the IPL 2025 with Punjab Kings, who finished runners-up. "As for today's training session, my only motivation was to get a feel for the rhythm -- how the body feels, how the red ball is coming out of the hand -- because all the players have been playing with the white ball for quite a while. So I really enjoyed it," he told "Going forward, as we keep progressing step by step, the intensity will keep increasing, and we'll keep making it more and more difficult for the batters to face the ball." India, without the services of retired Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will be led by new skipper Shubman Gill. The team includes a crop of young batters such as Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Arshdeep said he is enjoying bowling to his team-mates as he sharpens his red-ball skills. "It was fun bowling to the batters. They looked quite compact, and there was a competitive spirit—even though we were just working on rhythm, they were fully competing. So that made it even more fun," he said. "We had to grind properly and try to get them out with a solid plan. Sai has joined the team for the first time, and he looked very compact too. The skipper looked in good touch. I'll try my best to keep improving and get them out more often going ahead." 'When your attack includes Bumrah, comparison doesn't exist' ===================================== Arshdeep said he is focused on enhancing his skills while training alongside pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. "Whenever I hold the ball, I always feel that I am the best. But everyone knows—when you're in an attack that includes a player named Jasprit Bumrah, then the word 'comparison' doesn't even exist," he said. "So, the focus is on how we can improve each other's game, each other's skill sets—and how we can help the team. That's where my focus lies." Reflecting on his earlier stint in Kent, Arshdeep said: "It feels really good to be here. At first, you get that 'homely' feeling, that yes, I've spent two months here before, so it feels great. I'm really looking forward to creating many more memories here. "It's a small place, very peaceful. Not many people around. If you need peace of mind, this is the best place—because there's always a cool breeze blowing, a soft warmth from the sun, and when you sip hot chocolate in that setting, it's pure bliss. "And if you have a sweet tooth, make sure to have some churros with it," said Arshdeep. The opening Test begins in Leeds on June 20.

India set to take on Hong Kong in AFC Asian Cup qualifier clash

Kowloon (Hong Kong), June 9 (UNI) India will take on Hong Kong, China on Matchday 2 in Group C of the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers Final Round on Tuesday, at the Kai Tak Stadium here at 17:30 IST. The Group C table is still a clean slate with all four teams level on a point apiece after both games on Matchday 1 on March 25 ended goalless. India and Bangladesh drew in Shillong, while Hong Kong also got a point away to Singapore. Only the group winners will qualify for the Asian Cup in 2027. India, who made it to two successive Asian Cups for the first time in 2023, are aiming to extend the historic streak. Hong Kong also qualified for the previous tournament, but with only one available berth, either side is bound to miss out. India head coach Manolo Marquez exuded confidence on the eve of the Blue Tigers' clash against Hong Kong. 'Our preparations have been much better this time, if we compare with the previous FIFA windows, where you practically don't have too much time. We had about three weeks to prepare, between Kolkata, Bangkok, and here in Hong Kong. And we are ready to perform. Nothing special,' said Marquez. 'The environment in the team is quite good as well. Obviously, in all teams across the world, the environment is better when you are winning games constantly. But the environment, the relationship between the players, regardless of the results, is very good,' he said. India centre-back Konsham Chinglensana Singh echoed the coach's words. 'We are well prepared for the game after three weeks in the camp. Mentally, and physically, we have prepared well, and are ready for the game,' he said. The Blue Tigers have not had the rub of the green in recent times. Out of the three matches they have played in 2025 so far, they have won one, drawn one, and lost their last match against Thailand last week. Márquez, however, is not too worried about the 0-2 defeat against Thailand. 'In my opinion, most coaches are not worried about the scores in the friendly games. We are focussing on the important match (Hong Kong),' he said. 'I know everyone speaks about the score (against Thailand). But if we scored from the chances we created, it would have been different. This is football.' In what will be the inaugural football match at the newly built 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium, the tickets, reportedly, have sold out, and a full house can be expected on Tuesday. The stadium features a retractable roof, which will be kept closed during the match. On Monday, the Blue Tigers had an official training session at the venue to get a feel of the conditions. 'We will try to enjoy the situation in this stadium. I don't know if it will be completely full, but a lot of people will be there. It will be a nice event, but obviously, we are focusing on winning the game,' said Marquez. Hong Kong, China's head coach, Ashley Westwood, is no stranger to Indian football, having coached clubs like Bengaluru FC, ATK, and Punjab FC in India before taking up international coaching roles, first in Afghanistan, followed by Hong Kong. Westwood spoke highly of the development that Indian football has seen over the years. 'I went to India in 2013, and the country is a million miles away from where it was back then. I know their coach, I watched the ISL. He's a good coach, and he's been doing good things with FC Goa. He coaches right, he prepares right, and his players are always fit. 'The spirit's good in the squad, and everybody gets on with each other. We're looking forward to it,' he said. Hong Kong midfielder Ngan Cheuk Pan stressed on the importance for his teammates and him to focus on their own game, for the clash against India. 'We're following the tactics set by the coach and focusing on what we can do to improve our own performance. We want to be able to play our own game,' he said. India and Hong Kong, China have crossed swords 24 times. The Blue Tigers have won nine of these matches, while the hosts for Tuesday's game have won eight; seven matches have ended in draws. The match will be streamed live on FanCode. UNI BM

Amid controversy, James Anderson speaks about Team India's England cricket series named after Sachin Tendulkar

James Anderson has said he feels 'very proud' after the England-India Test series trophy was renamed the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. This decision was made to honour the legends from England and India, respectively. The five-match Test series begins on June 20 at Headingley. The official unveiling will take place during the WTC final at Lord's. "I still can't quite believe it. Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up, though I don't want to do him a disservice with his age,' Anderson told ESPNcricinfo. "I remember watching him, an absolute legend of the game, and I played against him a lot as well. So, to have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn't be more proud." Earlier in June, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the BCCI announced that the Pataudi Trophy would now be renamed the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy. The Pataudi Trophy was started in 2007 to celebrate 75 years since India's first Test tour of England. It was named after Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, who played Tests for both England and India, and his son Mansoor Ali Khan, a former Indian captain. While the change modernises the name, the original trophy stood as a symbol of India's colonial past in cricket and honoured a unique family that bridged two cricketing nations with pride and dignity. Sunil Gavaskar called the renaming 'disturbing indeed'. In his Sportstar column, he argued, 'This is the first time one has heard of a trophy named after individual players being retired, though the decision is entirely the ECB's, and the BCCI may well have been informed.' Veteran Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore, the wife of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, called the move insensitive. She said the Pataudi family had not been consulted. 'Whether the BCCI wants to preserve Tiger's legacy is for them to decide," she told HT. Meanwhile, nobody dares to deny the contribution of Sachin Tendulkar and Jimmy Anderson. Anderson retired in 2024 after playing 188 Tests and taking 704 wickets. Tendulkar retired in 2013 after 200 Tests and scoring 15,921 runs. They have played Test cricket more than anybody else. Tendulkar holds the top spot in Test appearances while Anderson is Number 2. They are followed by Ricky Ponting (168). Team India will have a new captain as they play in England. Shubman Gill will lead while Rishabh Pant is his deputy for a team built with future legends.
