Bhujbal to be inducted as minister
MUMBAI: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA from Yeola, Chhagan Bhujbal, is set to become a minister in the Mahayuti 2.0 government. He will take oath on Tuesday morning at the Raj Bhavan, people in the know told HT.
Bhujbal is expected to fill the vacancy left behind by Dhananjay Munde when he stepped down from his position of minister of food and civil supply, after the arrest of his confidante and election manager Walmik Karad, in connection with the brutal killing of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.
While Bhujbal confirmed to HT that he will take the oath on Tuesday, his nephew, former MP Sameer Bhujbal, said, 'We feel that a leader who fought for the rights of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) is getting justice. He continues to fight for them and others who are similarly deprived.'
Bhujbal, a prominent OBC leader, was one of the key aides of Ajit Pawar when the latter split up NCP in June 2023. He was inducted as a minister then; however, after the Mahayuti won the 2014 assembly election and returned to power, Ajit did not include him in NCP's team of ministers. An angry Bhujbal has been venting his ire since then.
The timing of the move is significant, as it takes place soon after the Modi government's decision to conduct caste-wise census, which will give OBCs a significant place in the state's politics. Besides, the state is also preparing for elections to 687 municipal bodies and district councils after the monsoon. OBC voters will be significant in these elections, which are being touted as mini-assembly polls.

Bengal makes minor tweaks to OBC list struck down by HC
1 2 Kolkata: Bengal's new OBC list, tabled by state govt in the assembly on Tuesday, has minor changes compared to the previous list. While the earlier list, struck down by the Calcutta High Court, had 113 OBC subgroups with 77 Muslim and 36 others, the new OBC list has 140 subgroups, 80 of them Muslim. Supreme Court is hearing a challenge by Bengal govt against the HC scrapping of the earlier list, impacting around 5 lakh OBC certificates. The state had told the SC that it would complete its fresh OBC survey by the end of June. The survey tabled on Tuesday also indicated that state is hearing representations from 50 more OBC groups. The percentage of Muslims in the new OBC list is 57.1. While there are 73.4% Muslims in the OBC 'A' category (in a total of 49 subgroups, 36 are Muslims and 13 non-Muslims), OBC 'B' has 48.3% Muslims (there are 91 subgroups, of which 44 are Muslims, and 47 are non-Muslims). The HC ruling had reduced 17% OBC reservations in the state to 7%. The report tabled on Tuesday allows Bengal govt to restore OBC reservation to 17%, allocating 7% for OBC 'A' and 10% for OBC 'B'. This is set to increase slightly with 50 additional groups being evaluated. The legal deadlock on the OBC issue had an overriding impact in Bengal, from pausing admissions to schools, colleges and universities to state govt recruitments. CM Mamata Banerjee, speaking in the assembly on Tuesday, had said that the issuance of OBC certificates for college admissions and govt jobs would resume immediately. "Many recruitment boards kept the process on hold due to the legal confusion. That will now be resolved," Banerjee had said, adding, "Backwardness, not religion, was the sole criterion in the fresh OBC survey." On Tuesday, Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari had alleged that the OBC list was flawed and stemmed from "appeasement politics". He said that there were only 11 Muslim groups out of 66 OBC groups before 2010. Adhikari went on to claim that OBC in Bengal meant 'one-sided beneficiary'. Questioning Adhikari's facts, Trinamool Congress had said in a statement on Tuesday: "Suvendu Adhikari, we all know that 'divide and rule' is the official policy of BJP, and your only agenda for the 2026 elections is to pit Hindus against Muslims. But CM Mamata Banerjee has made it crystal clear that backwardness, not religion, is the sole criterion for OBC status. The new list was prepared with that principle in mind. So stop misleading the people with your lies."

A tale of two NCPs and Senas
Nagpur: For the first time in Nagpur's civic polls, two factions of Shiv Sena and NCP will be vying to establish their base. While both parties had maintained a strong presence at the state level, they were unable to meet expectations in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections even before the split. Now, with cadres and voter bases divided between rival factions, political experts expect the battle for political traction in the NMC polls to become even more intense. However, leaders of both Shiv Sena and NCP factions claim to have an edge over their rivals. "People have taken notice of the work we have done at the ground level. In North Nagpur, we facilitated 3,000 new water connections, which the people have appreciated. In Rambagh, an issue related to the gutter line had been pending for 50 years, and we ensured that the project was completed," said NCP ( Ajit Pawar faction) leader Prashant Pawar, expressing confidence about his party's performance in the upcoming local polls. NCP (SP) leader Duneshwar Pethe also expressed optimism about gaining ground in the NMC elections. "It has been just over a year since the NCP split. Before that, all the work was done under the leadership of Sharad Pawar. Is it not shameful that the water problem still exists in Nagpur despite the ruling coalition being in power in the civic body for the last 15 years and over a decade at the state level? People have told us they are fed up with the Mahayuti and want change," he said. Pethe also outlined the party's development plans for the city. "We will address issues related to school fees and garbage collection. English medium schools will be started under NMC to ensure free education for children. We also need to properly plan hawkers' zones to improve traffic management. Merely building flyovers doesn't enhance the city's beauty," he added. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Nitin Tiwari said people will place their trust in the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction. "Sena UBT has been at the forefront, fighting for Nagpurians' rights. We have staged multiple agitations, exposed corruption by contractors in civic affairs, and questioned the deterioration of the city's infrastructure. Our party will transform city governance by providing transparent and efficient administration," he told TOI. His party colleague Kishore Kumeriya said, "The real DNA of Shiv Sainiks is rooted in the teachings of Balasaheb Thackeray, and that spirit resides in UBT. Sena UBT is filled with grassroots-level workers. Moreover, people have witnessed the commendable work done by Uddhav Thackeray during his tenure as CM." On the other hand, Shiv Sena ( Eknath Shinde faction) leader Mangesh Kashikar claimed his party is poised for significant gains. "Our strength is growing, and prominent faces from Sena (UBT) and other parties have joined us. In the coming week, more big names will join. Statistically, we had only two seats in NMC earlier, so there is little to lose. Our internal assessments suggest that we will win 12 seats this time," he said.
