Why the Audi Q7 55 TFSI still deserves your attention
Some may be disappointed to learn that the 3.0 l V6 TDI unit has been given the boot. It was hugely popular in the pre-facelift iteration of the Q7. As global, first-world markets and their more stringent emissions regulations shifting away from oil-burners, our region also feels the consequences. Your only choice is the 3.0 l turbocharged-petrol V6, denoted by the 55 TFSI moniker.
If fuel economy is less of a consideration, this power source will serve you just fine. It has an alluring sound — silky and mellifluous in the way Teutonic V6 motors tend to be. Power delivery is delivered in a commensurate way; creamy smooth, with a delicious groundswell of torque that makes overtaking a cinch. Average consumption sat at 12 l /100km after a week and nearly 600km. Height-adjustable air suspension makes for an appropriately supple ride quality.
There seems to be more questions than answers about Audi's strategy for the local market. A significant number of dealerships have closed down and while the brand has invested much into its high-end E-Tron electric vehicles, uptake has been slow. Rival brands have plug-in hybrids in their portfolios to support a gradual transition, which Audi does not.

Are there any safe cars left on SA roads? NCC issues another vehicle recall
Lexus warns that the issue greatly increases the risk of an accident, especially at higher speeds. Week after week, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a product recall of certain car models due to issues that can lead to serious injury. The latest recall is of a Lexus LX600 due to an issue that can greatly increase the risk of an accident, especially at higher speeds. The NCC is a body that protects consumers by ensuring that businesses comply with consumer protection laws and treat customers fairly. The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 safeguards consumers from hazards and ensures their well-being and safety by governing product recalls. The NCC can order a recall if a product is deemed unsafe or poses a potential risk to the public. ALSO READ: Jaguar recalls E-Pace models over tearing airbags Recall of Lexus cars In a statement released on Friday, 1 August, Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said Lexus South Africa is recalling 34 LX600 models manufactured between 17 January 2022 and 5 December 2022. These cars were sold through the Lexus South Africa Dealer Network, with distribution across all nine provinces. Lexus South Africa told the NCC that the impacted cars are equipped with a V35A engine that contains crankshaft main bearings, which allow the crankshaft to rotate within the engine assembly while running. Engines in the cars 'During a specific production period, there is a possibility that the engine machining debris of a particular size and amount may not have been cleared from the engine during manufacturing and subsequently contaminated the engine assembly during the production process. 'For these engines, in the affected vehicles, the pressure of the main bearings due to the engine configuration is such that if the machining debris adheres to the bearings and operation continues at higher loads over time, failure of the bearings may occur. 'Consequences include engine knocking, rough idling, failure to start, and in more severe instances, an engine stall while driving, which poses a serious safety risk due to the sudden loss of motive power.' 'Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to immediately contact the nearest authorised Lexus dealership. Lexus, as submitted to the NCC, will replace the engine at no cost to the consumer.' Mass Ford recall Ford Motor Company Southern Africa (FMCSA) recently issued a recall affecting four models, totalling 5 718 cars that might be affected by the issues. FMCSA stated that it is recalling EcoSports made between April 2021 and July 2022, Pumas from November 2021 to September 2024, and Rangers, as well as Everests, between June 2022 and March this year. Ford said the cars were not only sold in South Africa, but in other parts of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations. The recall of the EcoSport consists of 2 806 units in South Africa, 25 in Botswana and 41 in Namibia over front half shafts. Dearborn states that the front half shafts could have been inserted improperly into the transmission. In the case of the Puma, there are 1 775 cars affected in South Africa, six in Botswana, 13 in Namibia, and two in Eswatini. 'I'm useless': Is it time for Lewis Hamilton to retire from F1?
Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur defended Hamilton. 'I am useless,' said seven-time Formula One world champion and Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton's remarks shocked many who were watching as the frustrated Ferrari driver tried to get hold of the prancing horse since his move from Mercedes. Deflated It has been a bittersweet move for Hamilton, who craves the elusive eighth title after the fiasco at the controversial season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021, where Red Bull Racing's F1 driver Max Verstappen snatched the title from the Brit, thanks largely to F1's race director Michael Massy. Hamilton was deflated after the fiasco and seemed to have dropped a few places in the motivation sector, which is truly heartbreaking for his fans. 'Useless'? During qualifying on Saturday, a crestfallen Hamilton declared himself 'useless' after qualifying in 12th position for the Hungarian Grand Prix, as Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc surged to pole position. Leclerc appeared to be a little happier after he had failed to convert pole into victory for the 15th time in 16 attempts during the last three years. His one success came in last year's Monaco Grand Prix, his home event. Hamilton exited the session in Q2 with his head down and his helmet on as the 40-year-old retreated to the team's motor home. 'I'm useless,' said Hamilton. 'Absolutely useless. The team has no problem. You've seen the car on pole, so they probably need to change the driver.' Q: So, what happened in Quali? Lewis: I'm just useless. Q: Sorry, say again? Lewis: I'm just useless. Q: But that isn't obviously the case, is it? Lewis: It clearly is. I just drove terribly. 💔💔 — sim (@simsgazette) August 2, 2025 ALSO READ: Lando Norris wins Hungarian Grand Prix in another McLaren 1-2 Ferrari boss defends Hamilton To most observers, it appeared as if the pressures of living up to the hype of his spectacular move from Mercedes, where he won six titles, and adjusting to the culture, car and expectations at Ferrari were overwhelming him. Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur, on Sunday, just hours after Hamilton cut a dejected figure following a lacklustre drive to 12th place in the Hungarian Grand Prix, defended the British driver. 'I don't need to motivate him,' said Vasseur. 'Honestly, he's frustrated, but not demotivated. He's demanding, but I think it's also why he's (a) seven-time world champion. I can perfectly understand this situation. 'Sometimes, you are making comments on what the driver is saying (in) the car, but if you put the microphone on some other sportsmen, in football and so on, I'm not sure that it would be much better.' Retirement The 40-year-old Hamilton, winner of a record eight Hungarian Grands Prix and a record nine poles at the circuit, finished where he started and with his worst result at the circuit, inevitably sparking talk of his possible retirement, AFP reported. Hamilton and Verstappen, who battled so intensely in 2021 when the Dutchman claimed his first title, appear to have found a rapprochement and mutual respect. However, Hamilton's heart-on-sleeve vulnerability as he seeks his first Ferrari podium after 13 races this year may soon become a sad ending story if he cannot sort out his qualifying woes. Watch: BMW M3 CS Touring sets new Nürburgring lap record
The BMW M3 CS Touring has set a new lap record for wagons at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In July 2025, BMW put the new M2 CS through its paces at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with the German automaker's most compact M car completing a lap around The Green Hell in just 7:25.5 minutes – the quickest time ever recorded in the Compact Car category. However, now, BMW has decided to see just how quick its most hardcore M3 wagon can complete a lap around the 20.8km northern loop of this revered race track. The first BMW Touring to don the 'CS' badge, the M3 CS Touring set a lap time of 7:29.490 minutes, making it the quickest wagon to ever lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Noteworthy, it bested the previous record, held by its non-CS sibling, by just over five seconds. In addition, the time set by the M3 CS Touring is just over a second shy of the M3 CS sedan's. 'From the very beginning, it was clear that the BMW M3 CS Touring would set new standards in dynamics. With a time under 7:30 minutes, this model impressively demonstrates that this vehicle concept perfectly combines racing DNA with everyday usability,' said BMW M CEO Franciscus van Meel. As a reminder, the CS-badged M3 Touring employs the same engine as its 'standard' stablemate – BMW's familiar 3l turbocharged inline-six. However, for the CS, the German marque has turned up the wick; increasing the peak power output to a healthier 405kW (up 15kW). Torque remains unchanged, with 650N.m delivered to both the fore and aft axle via via BMW's eight-speed Steptronic transmission. According to the Bavarian brand, the increase in power output, several mechanical revisions, and weight saving, the M3 CS Touring sprints to the three-figure marker from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds; an improvement of 0.1 seconds over the non-CS model. However, the CS's 11.7-second 0-200km/h time eclipses the latter car's by 1.2 seconds. In addition, the top speed has increased, from 280km/h to 300km/h.
