Air India plane crash: Government forms high-powered panel led by Union home secretary to probe AI 171 crash
Air India plane crash (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: In a clear sign of how seriously the Modi government is taking the deadly crash of Air India flight AI 171, it on Friday formed a 'high level multi-disciplinary committee' headed by Union home secretary Govind Mohan to examine the causes leading to the June 12 Air India Ahmedabad-London Gatwick flight 171 crash. The move came just hours after PM Modi visited the crash site in Ahmedabad. In a late-night statement, the Union aviation ministry said this panel 'will examine the existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines (meant) to prevent and handle such occurrences… suggest comprehensive guidelines for dealing with such instances in the future. The committee will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations but will focus on formulating SOPs for preventing and handling such occurrences in the future. ' It will publish its report within three months or by Sept 13, 2025. The panel will 'ascertain the root cause of the crash. It will assess contributing factors, including mechanical failure, human error, weather conditions, regulatory compliance and other reasons. (It will) recommend necessary improvements and formulate a suitable SOP to prevent such incidents in the future. The SOP shall also include best international practices regarding preventing and handling such incidents,' the order says. It will "assess emergency response of various stakeholders (both Central and state governments), including rescue operations, and coordination among them…. will examine existing guidelines regarding handling such incidents and go through records of previous such aircraft crashes in the country. The committee will formulate a comprehensive SOP and suggest the roles of all agencies and organisations of the Central and State Governments to deal with post-crash incident handling and management. Suggest policy changes, operational improvements and training enhancements required to prevent such occurrences and handle post-crash incident situations,' the order says about the role of the panel. Headed by the Union home secretary, it will have as its members the aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha; additional/joint secretary from home ministry; representative from Gujarat government's home department & State Disaster Response Authority; Ahmedabad police commissioner; Indian Air Force DG (inspection & Safety); DG Bureau of Civil Aviation Security; DG Directorate General of Civil Aviation; intelligence bureau special director; director, government of India's directorate of forensic science services and any other member as deemed fit including aviation experts, accident investigators and legal advisors. 'The committee will have access to all records, including, among others, flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance records, ATC Log and witness testimonies. (It will) conduct site inspections; interview crew, air traffic controllers and relevant personnel. (It will) collaborate with international agencies if foreign nationals or aircraft manufacturers are involved.'

Mumbai ward boundaries for civic election to be notified by Sept 4
Mumbai: The state govt has in its schedule stated that the final ward boundaries for the BMC election will be notified by Sept 4. Apart from the BMC, ward boundaries for Pune and Thane municipal corporations will also be notified by Sept 4, while ward boundaries of other local bodies will be finalised by Sept 1. The state govt has asked all municipal commissioners who were tasked with drawing the ward boundaries to follow the schedule issued by the state urban development (UD) department. According to the schedule, the draft ward boundaries will be published from July 22 to 31. Suggestions and objections will be invited, and they will be given a hearing from Aug 1 to 11. "Taking into account the suggestions and objections, changes will be made, and then the final ward boundaries will be sent to the State Election Commission (SEC). This will be done from Aug 12 to 18. Once the SEC approves the final draft, the new ward boundaries will be notified after approval of the EC. The notification will be published from August 19 to September 4 for Mumbai, Thane, and Pune," officials said. "Officials are also expected to carry out site visits of the electoral wards to see the on-ground situation and plot the wards on maps. Once that is done, the initial draft will be sent to the SEC. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Then the revised draft will once again be sent to the SEC for final approval," the official said. The BMC will have 227 wards in the upcoming election. The state govt early this week decided to go ahead with 227 wards for Mumbai, reversing the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) decision to increase the wards to 236. With no increase in the number of wards, existing boundaries could see some marginal changes by the BMC based on the norms for ward boundary formation laid down by the state govt. The MVA had increased the number of wards to 236, citing an increase in population, but the Mahayuti govt said the latest census figures of 2011 will be considered, and so the number of wards will not be increased. An order issued by the state UD department directing municipal commissioners to finalise the new draft ward boundaries states that ward boundaries can be drawn only as per the latest census. Since this is done on the basis of population, the number of voters or the current number of residents in that area cannot be taken into account. Two FIRs under the Atrocities Act registered against ex-MP Jaleel
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Two FIRs were registered against former MP Syed Imtiaz Jaleel in the 24 hours ending Friday for allegedly using a discriminatory word against district guardian minister Sanjay Shirsat during a press conference, days after he made serious allegations against Shirsat's family over land acquisitions. Police said the two FIRs were registered at Kranti Chowk and Osmanpura police stations. Officers said they also received complaints on similar lines at different police stations, including Vedantnagar, but no decision was made to register fresh FIRs. Jaleel told TOI, "I just want Shirsat to reply to the questions I have raised about the huge moveable and immovable assets he has amassed. Unable to silence me, he is using police machinery to file such cases against me. I am ready to face all the consequences until all such elements are exposed." Police said based on the complaint lodged by Laxman Hivrale, an office-bearer of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), the Kranti Chowk police registered an FIR on Thursday night. In this FIR, Section 3 (1) of the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was invoked against Jaleel. On Friday, the assistant commissioner of police (City) issued directives to the Kranti Chowk police inspector for conducting a preliminary inquiry into the case and submit a report to him. The FIR was registered after a large number of Shirsat's supporters gathered at the police station on Thursday afternoon. The list of those who gathered included Jaleel's former loyalist Arun Borde, who said he intended to get FIRs registered across the state. "Though the second FIR was registered at Osmanpura police station, it will be merged with the first one registered at Kranti Chowk. The law is clear that there cannot be two FIRs for one violation, for which a person was already booked," said a senior police officer from the city police.
