Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train to be operational by 2028, says Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis
NEW DELHI: The much-awaited
Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train
project will be ready for operations by 2028, Maharashtra chief minister
Devendra Fadnavis
announced on Monday, while also revealing that the state aims to raise $50 billion from
international investors
to accelerate infrastructure development.
'By 2028, we will be able to travel in the bullet train,' Fadnavis said while speaking at an event on the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) project.
He acknowledged that Gujarat has made faster progress on the project and attributed delays in Maharashtra to the previous state government.
Without naming Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Fadnavis said the project had suffered during the two-year rule until 2022.
'After the new government came to power, we gave necessary approvals and work started rapidly,' he added.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad
high-speed rail corridor
is being built with Japanese assistance at an estimated cost of $15 billion.
Fadnavis criticised the earlier
Maha Vikas Aghadi
(MVA) government, claiming the bullet train project was halted for two and a half years under their leadership. 'If we are investing Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 crore on bullet trains and stopping the work for 2.5 years, who will have to bear the cost of the interest that is incurred?' he questioned.
Highlighting the state's infrastructure goals, Fadnavis said Maharashtra is targeting a $1 trillion Gross State Domestic Product (
GSDP
), and infrastructure development is crucial to achieving that. He said $30 billion was invested during his earlier term (2014–19) and larger amounts are now being deployed in key projects.
Among the major developments planned is the
Vadhavan port
, which is expected to be operational within the next 3–4 years.
Built on reclaimed land, the port will also feature an adjoining airport developed through land reclamation in the sea.
'Many major cities in the world have such airports,' Fadnavis said, asserting that the infrastructure will significantly reduce logistics costs. The port will also include a halt for the bullet train.
Fadnavis further announced that a highway from Nashik to the Vadhavan port is underway, connecting 17 districts to the new maritime hub. He also spoke about the
Shaktipeeth highway
, which aims to link Nagpur to Goa via backward regions of the state, thereby giving a push to regional economic development.
Reinforcing Maharashtra's role in the
IMEEC project
, Fadnavis assured that Mumbai and the state would create a strong enabling ecosystem. Speaking at the same event, PwC India chairperson Sanjeev Krishan said the IMEEC, when integrated with existing trade corridors, will create a 'multiplier effect' on the global economy.

TMC reaches out to Kejriwal, gets ‘AAP support' for INDIA veep candidate
Kolkata: Trinamool on Tuesday reached out to AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to get the party's backing for retired Justice B Sudershan Reddy — the opposition's vice-president pick. AAP isn't a member of the INDIA bloc now. TMC, which was a part of discussions to shortlist candidates, did not suggest any name but said that the fight should be "for the Constitution and the idea of India versus BJP and RSS ideology." According to a TMC senior, authorised by the party leadership and INDIA bloc partners, TMC leader in the Rajya Sabha Derek O'Brien met Kejriwal for around 45 minutes. AAP has 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha and three in the Lok Sabha. A neta aware of the developments said Kejriwal had assured support for Reddy's candidature. "We expect around 10 AAP MPs to vote for the opposition candidate," the neta said. The opposition bloc has decided that no such overture will be made to BJD and YSRC. "These parties need to choose their fight," a TMC neta said. Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who were in Kolkata, were kept abreast of the developments. While admitting that numbers were stacked in favour of NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan, a TMC senior said: "Even with AAP support, we are short on numbers. But we decided that the opposition will put up a strong candidate and we will give it our best shot. .. some battles need to be fought." The convergence of Trinamool and Congress, who are not electoral allies, on the VP candidate selection signals a close floor coordination in Parliament. After the selection of Reddy, O'Brien posted on X: "Teamwork. Candidate for vice-president. Every single opposition party on board. United in our fight against BJP-RSS." This also comes in the backdrop of Abhishek's Aug 11 statement referring to Congress. "If someone walks one step for us, we will also walk one step for them. Our priority is Bengal. In the current scenario, we will stand by those political parties who will stand next to us in this issue of SIR and Bengal's deprivation. That can be Congress, DMK, Sena or Samajwadi Party. We don't have any ego. We are fighting against the autocratic BJP together," he had said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Modi-Mauritius PM meet likely in Kashi on Sept 11
Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to host Mauritius PM Navin Ramgoolam in Varanasi on Sept 11. As per the initial intimation from the Ministry of External Affairs received by the district officials, a bilateral meeting of both the PMs has been also proposed in the city on the same day. Talking to TOI on Tuesday, divisional commissioner S Rajalingam said that as per the initial intimation from the Ministry of External Affairs, a bilateral meeting of PM Narendra Modi and the Mauritius PM has been proposed here on Sept 11. The minutes of the proposed visit of both the PMs have not been received, said the divisional commissioner, who has been appointed the nodal officer for the preparations of the proposed bilateral meeting. He has been also assigned the task to welcome the guests and select the venues. It would be the third occasion when Modi would host the premier of another country in his parliamentary constituency. In Dec 2015, Modi hosted the then Japanese PM, the late Shinzo Abe. The visit of the Japanese PM resulted in the gifting of an international convention centre, Rudraksh, as a symbol of Indo-Japan friendship. Modi hosted French President Emmanuel Macron in the city in March 2018. After inaugurating a solar power plant in Mirzapur, the PM Modi and the French President visited the Deen Dayal Hastkala Sankul to interact with artisans and view a live demonstration of their crafts. Later, they both enjoyed a boat ride from Assi to Dashaswamedh. The officials said that apart from the venue of the proposed bilateral meeting, other places where the guest will visit and events in which he will take part will be finalised soon. The agenda of the bilateral meeting is expected to remain focused on trade and tourism. Before Ramgoolam, his predecessor, Pravind Jugnauth, arrived in the city in Sept 2023. NSUI first to release manifesto, promises e-bike stations and mental health counselling
Chandigarh: Solar rooftops, subsidised canteens, 24×7 health centres, ramps and lifts, even e-scooter stations- NSUI opened the manifesto season at Panjab University with a catalogue of promises that sounded ambitious, but to many on campus, familiar. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Last year's commitments of placements, self-defence classes and pad-vending machines still remain unfulfilled, and doubts are already circling whether this manifesto will fare any better. The Congress-backed student body released its document at Chandigarh Congress office, with NSUI national president Varun Choudhary and Chandigarh Congress chief H S Lucky present. Choudhary said the manifesto "reflected the aspirations of every student" and would help NSUI "sweep the elections." Asked how the long list would be assured, Lucky replied, "Manifesto means manifestation, and the motive is to strive for it. " The manifesto covers nearly every aspect of campus life: OBC reservation in admissions and hostels, scholarships for EWS students, a "One PU, One App" for grievances and results, 24×7 innovation hubs in unused classrooms, subsidised food with daily menu voting, women's safety desks, leadership programmes, sports scholarships, and more. Yet PU's lived reality points to a wide gap. As reported earlier this week, manifestos at PU "promise the moon but deliver not even an email ID." On disability access, NSUI talks of ramps and lifts. But even after a Punjab State Human Rights Commission directive and memorandums by students from 2023, PU still lacks a basic ramp at the SBI fee counter where every student queues, as reported in June. An accessibility audit in 2024 exposed further deficits, while last year's council chose to prioritise cultural fests instead. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Women's safety is another major plank. NSUI promises a 24×7 task force, grievance desks and full CCTV coverage. But PU already struggles with inadequate security staff, and despite budget approval in December for CCTV expansion, installation is yet to begin. As TOI reported in July, even with the library buzzing 24×7, many women students avoid the dark, poorly lit roads leading back to their hostels. Mental health counselling, too, finds mention. But counselling is already mandatory under UGC norms, and PU has only one part-time counsellor for over 16,000 students- a crisis TOI exposed in July. Likewise, the pledge for a YouTube channel ignores that PU already runs one. With the university facing a financial crunch and still awaiting over Rs 47 crore for hostel construction, proposals like solar rooftops, e-scooter stations and 24×7 doctors sound more like slogans than plans. The much-touted "One PU, One App", pitched as a digital hub for results, grievances, library and transport- also seems a distant dream. PU councils have failed for years to provide students even a basic official email ID, despite repeated assurances in manifestos. Against that backdrop, an all-in-one app looks more like a distant hope than a deliverable. Choudhary admitted NSUI could only "pressurise" the administration, without explaining how the projects would move from manifesto to implementation. Still, by releasing its manifesto first, NSUI has forced other groups to catch up. Whether this document turns into delivery or another year of recycled paper promises is the question weighing on PU voters.
