Brahim Diaz Faces Uncertain Future at Real Madrid

Morocco World5 days ago
Brahim Diaz is facing mounting uncertainty over his role at the club, despite solid appearances last season and a recent contract renewal.
According to Spanish newspaper AS , Diaz, who played more than 100 minutes in the Club World Cup, has seen his prominence diminish under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The 25-year-old featured sporadically in the competition, with Turkish youngster Arda Güler and other emerging names handed more responsibility.
Alonso's early reign has seen the rise of several promising players, including Gonzalo Garcia, Dean Huijsen and Güler, all of whom have adapted quickly to the Basque manager's system. As a result, Diaz has struggled to secure meaningful minutes, despite having been a regular under previous boss Carlo Ancelotti.
The Malaga-born attacking midfielder joined Real Madrid in 2019 but spent three seasons on loan at AC Milan, where he impressed before returning in 2023. Under Ancelotti, he became a dependable substitute and often filled in for Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham.
Last season, Diaz made 56 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing seven assists, slightly down from 12 goals and nine assists the previous year. However, despite the increased number of matches, his average playing time dropped from 45.5 to 40.8 minutes per game.
Competition for places has intensified. Arda Güler has become a key figure in Alonso's plans, even taking charge in midfield during the Club World Cup. Meanwhile, the arrival of Argentine winger Franco Mastantuono—signed for €63.2m—adds another layer of difficulty for Diaz, as Real Madrid look to the future.
Nevertheless, Diaz appears determined to fight for his spot and could benefit from the potential departure of Brazilian winger Rodrygo, who is being courted by Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Diaz's best hope may lie in holding on and capitalising should an opening arise. For now, he remains on the fringes, battling to stay relevant in an increasingly crowded squad. Tags: Brahim DiazReal Madrid

Real Madrid Eye Manchester City's Rodri as Midfield Target

Real Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Rodri as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season. The 29-year-old Spaniard, crowned Ballon d'Or winner last year, has become a central figure for City since joining the club in 2019. He made four appearances and provided one assist in the most recent Club World Cup. Rodri is currently valued at €110 million, according to Transfermarkt. He has made 57 appearances for the Spanish national team, scoring four goals and providing two assists across all competitions. Real Madrid are said to be seeking a long-term replacement for Toni Kroos in midfield, following a shortage of personnel in that area last season. The club sees Rodri as a natural fit. Manchester City are undergoing a period of transition in midfield. Mateo Kovačić is sidelined due to injury, Ilkay Gündoğan's future is uncertain, and new signings Nico González and Tijjani Reijnders are still integrating into the squad. Rodri is under contract at the Etihad until 2027, but no agreement has been reached over an extension. Real Madrid are reportedly ready to offer improved terms, putting Manchester City in an uncomfortable position: either accept the bid and complete one of the most high-profile transfers in European football history, or reject it and risk losing leverage. But just before the official announcement, the deal was scrapped. Spanish journalist Ramón Álvarez de Mon revealed that Ouazane failed to pass his medical, citing unspecified concerns. AS confirmed in the report, stating that the medical was 'non-conclusive,' prompting Madrid to pull the plug. 🚨 BREAKING: Abdellah Ouazane to Real Madrid has COLLAPSED. He FAILED his medicals. @JorgeCPicon — Madrid Xtra (@MadridXtra) July 17, 2025 The collapse of the deal has reopened doors for other suitors. Paris Saint-Germain, long interested in the midfielder, may now pounce. So could Manchester United and Barcelona, both of whom had been tracking his progress. Ajax, sensing the opportunity, have tabled a new contract offer – his fourth. The Dutch club, where he was developed, previously held back in hopes of cashing in. Now, they're eager to retain him. The proposal would see Ouazane play for the Ajax U23 side in the Dutch second tier while training with the senior squad. Despite the Madrid hiccup, Ouazane remains one of Morocco's most exciting young talents. He scored four goals in 16 appearances last season and was voted MVP of the U17 AFCON.
