
Langkawi cops arrest seven over counterfeit cash scam
Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari confirmed that authorities have received four reports of counterfeit RM100 notes being used in transactions at businesses in Chenang, Padang Matsirat, and Kuah.
"Following the reports and tips from the public, police apprehended five men and two local women, aged between 24 and 36 years old, in two separate locations starting from 8.30pm yesterday," he said in a statement Sunday (Aug 17) night.
Urine tests on the suspects revealed all tested positive for drugs, and some have prior criminal records linked to drugs and other offences.
The suspects have been remanded for three days until Tuesday (Aug 19).
The case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code. - Bernama

Policeman killed in Seremban crash involving suspected drunk driver
SEREMBAN: A policeman died after his motorcycle was struck by a car driven by a man suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred early this morning on Jalan Temiang near Sekolah Kebangsaan Temiang. Seremban district police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din confirmed the victim was a 23-year-old constable from Jalan Campbell police station. The officer sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital around an hour later. Initial investigations revealed the victim was on duty and riding a Honda EX5 motorcycle from Seremban towards Temiang. He was hit by a Perodua Bezza driven by a 26-year-old man who lost control and veered into the wrong lane. The driver suffered minor injuries and was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. A blood sample was taken for testing at the Chemistry Department. Mohamad Hatta stated the suspect has been remanded for six days starting today. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Perlis customs seize RM2.95 million in cannabis and cigarettes
KANGAR: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department seized cannabis and cigarettes worth RM2.95 million in three separate operations this month. Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim confirmed the seizure of 30kg of cannabis valued at RM2.94 million at the Kuala Perlis marine entry point. The cannabis was found in four gunny sacks containing 146 transparent plastic packs during an inspection on August 7. The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In another incident, customs officers seized 22,400 cigarettes worth RM6,720 with unpaid tax of RM15,456 from a Proton Iswara in Kuala Perlis. A 54-year-old man was arrested but later released on RM5,000 Customs bail after the August 6 roadside inspection. On August 7, authorities found 27,000 cigarettes worth RM8,100 with unpaid tax of RM18,630 in an unoccupied house in Taman Kepala Batas, Kedah. Both cigarette cases are being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) and 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. - Bernama

DOE, Labuan Corporation and Marine Dept investigate oil spill at Marina Jetty

LABUAN: An investigation has been launched into the oil spill incident at the Labuan Public Marine Jetty to identify the parties responsible. The Department of Environment (DOE), in a statement to Bernama today, said the investigation would involve Labuan Corporation and the Marine Department. The incident was first reported to the DOE office in Labuan on Aug 14, and enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the site for inspection at 2.30 pm the same day. The DOE enforcement officers discovered oil waste patches estimated between 500 to 1,000 litres accumulated along the jetty and sticking to boats. 'Samples of the oil waste were collected and have been sent to the Chemistry Department for of no compound issued to any parties,' it said. It added that an immediate action notice was issued to the jetty operator, and clean-up operations were carried out by the Petroleum Industry of Malaysia Mutual Aid Group (PIMMAG). The DOE confirmed that it is working closely with the Marine Department, Labuan Corporation, and Labuan Port Authority in managing the case. The department reminded the public that discharging oil into Malaysian waters without a licence is an offence under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and stern legal action will be taken against those found responsible. The department also reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and strict enforcement to safeguard Labuan's marine environment.
