Al-Hilal say first team will not play in Hong Kong's Saudi Super Cup because of fatigue

Al-Hilal have confirmed their 'first football team' would not play in next month's Saudi Super Cup, saying they were told only a month ago, when they were already in the US competing in the Club World Cup, that the event would be in Hong Kong. In a statement posted on the club's website on Monday, Al-Hilal said it had written to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to explain its decision, and emphasised the 'exceptional circumstances' behind the move. The Riyadh-based club, who have won the competition five times, said competing at Hong Kong Stadium in August would violate player contracts, as it would mean they would not get the minimum 28 days of annual leave. Al-Hilal also pointed to the fact that some of their players had been without a break for more than a year, with domestic and international commitments ending only after they lost to Fluminense in the Club World Cup quarter-finals on July 5. Officials said the club had 'reiterated its pride in participating in the Saudi Super Cup, a tournament the club has won multiple times'. Al-Hilal players are expected to feature in Saudi Arabia's World Cup qualifiers in October. Hong Kong police primed to support future tourism and mega-event ambitions

Hong Kong's police chief has said that the force is fully prepared to support the hosting of more mega-events in the city, given its experience of crowd control gained at the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium. Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming said their preparations for the opening of the main stadium in Kai Tak Sports Park had equipped officers to manage a greater number of major events, emphasising the force's commitment to spectator satisfaction. 'Every time after the events or before the events, we've seen a lot of smiley faces. This is what we really treasure,' Chow told the Post. Before becoming police chief, Chow served as deputy commissioner for operations and was a member of an interdepartmental task force responsible for the smooth operation of Kai Tak Sports Park. He organised various drill exercises to simulate crowd control and traffic conditions in the lead-up to its March opening. Beyond backing the government's initiative to host more mega-events, the police chief also expressed support for increasing public access to the force's old Yau Ma Tei Police Station, which has become a popular photo opportunity for mainland Chinese tourists. The station, housed in a colonial building, is one of the government's nine 'hotspot projects' aimed at boosting in-depth tourism in Hong Kong.

Injured Siobhan Haughey pulls out of World Aquatics Championships in Singapore

Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey has pulled out of this month's World Aquatics Championships in Singapore with a back injury, the four-time Olympic medallist said on Monday. Haughey was expected to compete for her sixth world title at the Singapore Sports Hub when the swimming leg kicks off on Sunday. The 27-year-old has only competed in one international tournament since taking a four-month break at the beginning of the year and said she had 'to do what is best for me'. 'I have pulled out of the World Championships in Singapore due to an ongoing back injury,' Haughey wrote on her Instagram story. 'I'm sad to miss out on the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, but right now I have to do what's best for me. 'As elite athletes, we're trained to push through the pain and fatigue to keep going. Yet at certain moments, the brave and hard thing to do is to take care of your body and wait patiently. Luckily, I have an incredible team supporting me. 'I can't wait to be back racing on the world stage again. But in the meantime, I will be cheering for the Hong Kong team and my friends from afar. Hope to see you all at the pool soon again.'
