DOTr: Work on Siargao Airport's expansion to start August 8, 2025
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Tuesday that the construction for the expanded passenger terminal building of the Siargao Airport would begin on Friday, August 8. In a Facebook post, the agency said this is upon directives of President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. to enhance travel experience and guarantee the comfort of local and foreign travelers. In March of this year, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon directed several changes in Siargao Airport. He ordered modular expansion in the said airport to increase seating capacity and address the heavy crowding, as well as the removal of VIP lounge and redundant x-ray machines to speed up the security check process. Photo from DOTr Facebook page According to Dizon, the agency has a long-term goal of making Siargao Airport an international hub as he also directed the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to accelerate plans for extending the runway and building a new and world-class passenger terminal. The Siargao Airport is part of the bundled unsolicited proposal for the modernization and expansion of Davao and Bicol Airports submitted by the JG Summit and Filinvest Groups under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) deal, the DOTR said. Once finished, the expanded and modern Siargao Airport PTB can accommodate thrice its current capacity from 200 passengers to at least 750 passengers on a daily basis. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

DOTr offers free rides to MRT-3 passengers with issues in cashless pilot run
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will provide free rides to passengers who will encounter issues in tapping out during the pilot run of cashless payments. 'Starting Monday, August 4, the DOTr and MRT-3 will provide free single journey tickets (SJT) to passengers who are unable to tap out at MRT-3 stations due to system errors during the pilot run of cashless payments in the train line,' the Transportation Department said in a statement. According to the DOTr, some MRT-3 riders complained that they were charged the maximum fare of P28 due to system issues when tapping out at exit turnstiles. 'As a solution, affected passengers will be given a non-expiring SJT equivalent to the maximum MRT fare, which they can use for their next ride,' the DOTr said. Affected passengers may proceed to any ticket booth and present proof of the failed tap-out transaction to claim the free SJT. 'Humihingi lang din tayo ng konting pang-unawa sa ilang mga problema ngayong pilot run, pero rest assured na within this August, dadami pa ang cashless turnstiles natin at tuloy-tuloy ang system upgrades para iwas-aberya,' Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said. (We are just asking for a little understanding regarding some of the problems during this pilot run, but rest assured that within this August, we will have more cashless turnstiles and system upgrades will continue to prevent malfunctions.) On July 25, the DOTr rolled out the pilot run for the cashless transaction in MRT-3. Passengers can simply tap their cards, GCash Commuter QR code, or Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled Android smartphones in the new turnstiles. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA Integrated News

Love Bus eyed back on PH roads before end of 2025
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday expressed hope that the return of the Love Bus could be a nationwide program before the year ends. In a social media post, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said the implementation of this transport program would be studied in the coming weeks. The agency also released photos, showing the design of the Love Bus. ''Agad-agaran nating gagawin yung gusto ng Pangulo para sa mga kababayan nating commuter. Pag-aaralan natin ito (love bus) sa mga susunod na linggo. Hopefully bago matapos ang taon ay sinisimulan na natin as a nationwide program," Dizon said. (We will immediately abide by what the President wants for our commuters. We will study this in the coming weeks. Hopefully, before the year ends, we're already starting this as a nationwide program.) During his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said the iconic Love Bus would make a comeback, which will be free for commuters. The Love Bus was introduced in several Metro Manila routes in the 1970s and were the only air-conditioned bus during that time. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
