Former world snooker champion Dott to go on trial next year over sex-abuse allegations
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Former world snooker champion Graeme Dott will go on trial next year over allegations that he sexually abused children. The 48-year-old Dott is facing two charges of sex abuse against a boy and a girl. According to court papers seen by the Associated Press, the alleged abuse took place from 1993-96 and from 2006-10. A virtual hearing took place on Thursday at the High Court in Glasgow where Dott, who was not present, denied the charges, Britain's Press Association reported. 'The position of the accused is that the allegations are fabricated and there is no truth in any of them,' said Euan Dow, who is defending Dott. A trial date was set for Aug. 17 next year at the same court and bail was continued, PA reported. Dott was suspended by snooker's governing body in April after being charged. Dott won the world snooker championship in 2006 after beating Peter Ebdon in the final at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. The Scottish player also reached the final on two other occasions, losing to Ronnie O'Sullivan in 2004 and Neil Robertson in 2010. ___ AP sports:

Gang member who made £1.8m from crime to pay back just £10
A member of an organised crime gang (OCG) which stored £135,000 worth of Class A drugs at a hotel has been ordered to pay back just £10 despite benefiting by almost £2m. Drugs including heroin, cocaine, and MDMA were stored at two hotels. Ihtesham Ali Hassan, the manager of the Box Hotel in Newport, became involved in a drugs conspiracy headed by Nicholas Yhnell, 38. The OCG was involved in the supply of heroin, cocaine, and MDMA which was stored at the Box Hotel and its sister hotel the Box Guest House. Jade Strutt, 36, was also involved in the enterprise by directing drug couriers and storing cash. For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter. An operation was launched by Gwent Police which saw five warrants executed in September last year at buildings in Newport and Cardiff involving 80 firearms officers and 100 supporting officers and staff. Among the items seized were five cars including a Range Rover and multiple phones. Also seized was heroin with a street value of up to £9,000, cocaine with a street value of up to £74,000, MDMA powder with a street value up to £49,000, and MDMA tablets with a street value up to £6,000. More than 1.1m lignocaine tablets and paracetamol tablets were also seized. Further members of the OCG were arrested including Yhnell's wife Kelly Balchin, 39, David Watkins, 38, Richard Connors, 40, and Kayla Grubb, 32. The latter three were employed as "professional" couriers. Connors, partner of Strutt, was arrested in May last year in his car and was found in possession of 965,000 paracetamol tablets to be used as an agent to make heroin. Yhnell, of Newport was sentenced to 15 years and nine months imprisonment. Watkins, of Newport, was sentenced to six years imprisonment. Strutt, of Newport, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment. Connors, of Newport, was sentenced to six years imprisonment. Grubb, of Newport, was sentenced to six years imprisonment. Balchin, of Newport, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. At a Proceeds of Crime (POCA) hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday Strutt was said to have benefited to the tune of £1,891,409 for her part in the enterprise but it was heard she has no available assets. Judge Simon Mills ordered the defendant to pay a nominal sum of £10. Get daily breaking news updates on your phone by joining our WhatsApp community here. Council's bid to block hotel housing asylum seekers to be heard on Friday
A council's bid to be granted a temporary injunction blocking asylum seekers from being accommodated at a hotel is expected to be heard on Friday. Epping Forest District Council said on Tuesday that it had filed documents at the High Court requesting an interim injunction stopping migrants from being housed at the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex. It follows a series of protests in recent weeks outside the hotel, after an asylum seeker was charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. PA news agency understands the injunction bid is due to be heard on Friday by Mr Justice Eyre at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, with the case involving the council and Somani Hotels Ltd. The council said in a statement on Tuesday that it had seen 'unprecedented levels of protest and disruption' in connection with asylum seeker accommodation. It continued that it had issued the injunction bid because of the 'clear risk of further escalating community tensions and urgency of the need for the present situation to be brought under control'. Councillors had voted unanimously last month to call on the Home Office to close the hotel, the council added. Chris Whitbread, leader of the council, said the situation 'cannot go on' but the Government 'is not listening'. He said: 'The use by the Home Office of the premises for asylum seekers poses a clear risk of further escalating community tensions already at a high, and the risk of irreparable harm to the local community. 'This will only increase with the start of the new school year. 'In our view, placing asylum seekers in the Bell Hotel is a clear breach of planning permission. It is not in use as a hotel, and it doesn't function as a hotel. 'The establishment of a centre to accommodate asylum seekers in this particular location, in close proximity to five schools, a residential care home, and the shops and amenities of the market town of Epping, is not appropriate in planning terms.' The protests outside the hotel came after a man who was staying at the hotel, Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, 38, was charged with sexual assault. Kebatu, who is accused of attempting to kiss a 14-year-old girl, denies the charges and will stand trial this month. A second man who resides at the hotel, Syrian national Mohammed Sharwarq, 32, has separately been charged with seven offences. At a hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, he denied a count of sexual assault after being alleged to have kissed a man on the neck. He indicated guilty pleas to a further two counts of common assault and four of assault by beating, with all of the offences said to have taken place at the hotel between July 25 and August 12. He was remanded in custody until a trial at the same court next month. Six men charged in relation to disorder outside the hotel will also appear in court next week.
