NFL ditches 100-year-old chain crew as AI takes over first downs; new kickoff rules leave fans divided
The NFL's 2025 Hall of Fame action kicked off with a spotlight on both Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Trey Lance's strong performance and the league's newest tech-driven rule changes, which may have rubbed fans the wrong way.
While Lance gave the Chargers a boost with a steady showing, it was the league's updated approach to first-down measurements and revamped kickoff rules that sparked the most discussion among fans and players alike.
Brand new first-down measurement system replaces chains with AI tech on the big screen
The most striking change of the night of the game came during the second quarter when officials paused play to measure for a first down. But instead of the age-old tradition of the usual chain crew trotting out on field, the stadium turned to the video board.
The system produced a virtual image on the screen confirming Detroit had crossed the line to gain, officially replacing the century-old chain system which was first introduced in 1906.
Mixed reactions pour in after AI replaces 100-year-old measurement method
"Chains are out. Lasers are in. Welcome to the future," one user wrote on X. Another added, "System breakdown will be common when it's time to fix clutch games." Despite the technology's promise, not all feedback was positive. "Doesn't change the fact that the ball is still spotted by the ref's eyes.

That's what needs to be fixed," one fan criticised. Another took aim at the broader trend of NFL changes and wrote, "Destroying the game piece by piece.
No real kickoffs, can't tackle anyone without a flag, and now Wimbledon? Give me a human chain gang anytime."
Kickoff rule changes make debut as touchbacks move up to make room for more returns
Also introduced were the NFL's new kickoff rules, with touchbacks now starting at the 35-yard line. The idea is to encourage more returns and eliminate some of the game's most routine dead-ball plays. But things didn't start smoothly for the Detroit Lions. Linebacker Grant Stuard fumbled on the opening play, getting tackled at the 26-yard line. 'It's the first one out of the gate,' said head coach Dan Campbell. 'We turned it over five times and had zero takeaways.
That's hard,' he added.

For now, fans are divided, with some liking the new changes and others feeling the NFL is moving too far from the game's traditions.

Patriots WR Stefon Diggs 72 receptions from taking over Houston's Anthony Brown for this milestone
New England Patriots' wide receiver Stefon Diggs is on the cusp of achieving something great by surpassing fellow WR Anthony Brown of the Houston Roughnecks. During a recent appearance on 'Up & Adams' with Kay Adams, Diggs reacted to being just 72 receptions away from taking over Brown for a spot in the top 25 on the NFL's all-time receptions list. Patriots WR drops massive hint Stefon Diggs on the possibility of overtaking Antonio Brown '72 receptions away from cracking the Top 25 in all-time receptions? Stefon Diggs says he might have to make some calls ' a page wrote on social media. When the matter was brought up by host Adams, the 11-season NFL player reacted with a chuckle. 'It's very obtainable. I'm going to have to make some calls!' he said. 'I mean that was a good stretch. It's really impressive what AB did. He's one of the best receivers I've ever known to play this game. I think it was like a 4 or 5-year stint where he had 1800, 1600. He was just going insane. So, it'll be a blessing to get there. I don't know how long it'll take me. We'll see.' What do the Patriots expect out of Stefon Diggs this season? Needless to say, Diggs is expected to be a game-changer for the Patriots this season. Following an unpredictable time with Houston and a steady departure from Buffalo, the pressure to be a leader during his stint with the Patriots is high. Paired up with quarterback Drake Maye (recently drafted as No. 3 overall), he has previously been vocal about how 'different' Diggs's presence feels in the team, as reported by Clutch Points. The wide receiver is known to have nicknames for his younger teammates and seems to be building connections behind the scenes. ALSO READ| Did Stefon Diggs split with Cardi B over 'BBL smell'? Maye, along with the offensive leaders, had hoped to use the getaway as a way to build and amplify chemistry. However, Diggs seems to be fitting in well with the team dynamics overall. Eagles' Jalen Hurts ranks low on Madden 26 NFL list, fans say, ‘that Hurts'
NFL ratings for Madden 26 have been released, and it's safe to say that Philadelphia Eagles fans have been left in shock looking at players' rankings. Lane Johnson (right tackle) and Saquon Barkley (halfback) are the only two players to make it to the 99 club this year, with the latter being announced as the cover star. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke)(AP) As celebratory as this ranking may sound, the score awarded to another Eagle, Jalen Hurts, have been the topic of the town since its release. Jalen Hurts's low ranking As offensive grades for Madden 26 were released, Jalen Hurts's overall grade of 86 has caught widespread attention. 'Madden Ratings are out and Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts is only an 86!! Should he be higher or lower than this?,' a page wrote on social media. 'An 86 overall grade still seems insulting. So does tying him with Justin Herbert, and we're going to need an explanation of the Eagles quarterback landing behind Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff,' wrote Geoffrey A Knox of USA Today on Thursday (July 31). 'The 93 rating seems like a generous grade for A.J. Brown. Then, you remember he's better than at least three of the guys who are graded ahead of him. While we realize this is subjective, what gives?'
