Rangers handed Luuk de Jong transfer hope as PSV fate 'sealed' while interest in wonderkid 'target' ramps up
Luuk de Jong appears to have played his final game for PSV Eindhoven after having the number nine shirt taken away from him.
Netherlands international de Jong is out of contract with the Eredivisie title winners and has been touted as a potential target for Rangers.
de Jong - once of Barcelona and Newcastle - had been training with PSV earlier this month on their return to pre-season training but did not travel with Peter Bosz squad for a camp in Germany.
Ex Ajax boss Bosz is now resigned to losing his captain and has moved quickly to bring in a replacement for the 34-year-old in the form of Borussia Mochengladbach's.
And de Jong's departure from the Eindhoven club has been all but confirmed with fellow striker Ricardo Pepi handed the number nine jersey by Bosz ahead of the coming season.
The USA star missed the final four months of last season with injury but is relishing the responsibly that comes with the shirt number. Pepi also hopes that de Jong will make the 'best choice' as regards to his next move.
Speaking to ESPN, he said: "It's a privilege. Many legends have worn this number at PSV. I'm taking on the challenge of writing my own history.
"Yes, [Plea] is a great player, of course. But I'm a great player too. I think [him coming in] is a good thing.
"There should always be competition. It keeps you sharp and that makes you a better player.
"I don't want to bother him [De Jong] at the moment, because I know he's figuring out what career path he wants to take.
"I'm sure the club has discussed it with him. I trust he'll make the best choice for himself. We've always had good conversations. We have a good relationship."
Meanwhile, interest in reported Gers target Pierce Charles has been ramped up.
Ibrox boss Russell Martin has hinted that he may look to bring in additional competition between the sticks for Jack Butland and Sheffield Wednesday star Charles is said to be on his radar.
However, The Star report that the Light Blues will face competition from down south and in Europe for the 19-year-old's signature.
Charles - who still has two years remaining on his contract with the Owls - made 13 appearances for Wednesday last season and has already won nine caps for Northern Ireland at senior level.

These are the top Scottish transfer stories, rumours and gossip on Monday morning, including the latest news from Rangers, Celtic, Hibs and the Scotland national team. Hibs dealt Triantis blow Hibs hopes of bringing Nectar Triantis back to Easter Road this summer are looking 'increasingly unlikely' according to a report from the Daily Record. A standout player for the capital outfit after joining on loan from Sunderland last summer, head coach David Gray is keen on reuniting with the 22-year-old midfielder, with Hibs seeking a permanent deal for Triantis. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris had provided an update on the Aussie midfielder at the weekend, who was absent from the Black Cats squad in their 3-0 friendly defeat to Hearts at the weekend for Craig Gordon's testimonial. 'All I can say right now is that we are trying our best to improve the team,' said Le Bris. 'We will have to see what happens. If you look at the Hearts game, then it looks as though we are far away from where we need to be. That is clear. But at the same time, it is always a work in progress.' However, while Triantis may still leave the Stadium of Light this summer, the report claims the chances of him joining Hibs are growing slimmer by the day due to the player's 'significant wage increase' as a result of the Sunderland's promotion back to the English Premier League. Clubs in the EFL Championship, German Bundesliga and MLS are believed to be eyeing a move for the Australian. Sunderland defender Nectar Triantis is a wanted man this summer. | Chris Fryatt Scotland star 'opens talks' Motherwell wonderkid Lennon Miller is edging closer to the Fir Park exit door, according to a report from transfer guru Nicolò Schira. The teenager midfielder is in the final year of his contract, and has been linked with a move to Celtic, Sunderland and clubs in the German Bundesliga this summer after impressing on his full international debut vs Liechtenstein in June. Head coach Jens Berthel Askou had denied denied the player was close to a departure last Friday, saying 'he's still a Motherwell player and we're very happy to have him here.' However, it now looks like the 18-year-old could be joining international teammate Lewis Ferguson at Bologna, after the Coppa Italia champions were said to have opened negotiations with Motherwell over a deal that would see him join I Rossoblu. The report states that talks are ongoing between the two clubs, with Miller offered a contract until 2029 at the Renato Dall'Ara Stadium, with the option to deal for a further year. The 38-year-old veteran had been strongly tipped to move to Glasgow rivals Rangers earlier this summer, after bringing his 13-year stay at the King Power Stadium to an end in June, though no move to Ibrox materialised. The report claims that West Ham United are ready to offer Vardy a route back to the English Premier League, with head coach Graham Potter a big admirer of the player, though he intends to use him more as an impact substitute at the London Stadium. His former boss at Leicester, Rodgers is said to be 'weighing up' the decision to launch a bid for the experienced free agent, with the Hoops head coach keen to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the Scottish Premiership opener against St Mirren later this week. Jamie Vardy has interest from Celtic, according to a fresh report. | Getty Images Rangers 'agree fee' Rangers are closing in on their eighth signing of the summer after agreeing a deal with Go Ahead Eagles for winger Oliver Antman, as per numerous reports. The 23-year-old, who is valued at around £5million, was one of the Eredivisie's standout players last season, but is set to become Russell Martin's newest summer arrival at Ibrox, with a deal likely to be completed 'in the next 24 to 48 hours.' Linked to Sheffield United earlier in the window, it appears Rangers have stolen a march on the Blades in the race for Antman, who scored seven goals and assisted a further 17 for his side last season. It is claimed that the two clubs came to an agreement over a transfer fee over the weekend, and contracts talks with the player have progressed quickly. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

Ex-Rangers coach reflects on ‘amazing' return to club as he's spotted back at Ibrox for first time since sacking
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE brand new era at Rangers is well and truly up and running now. But a prominent figure from the Light Blues' recent past has been spotted back at Ibrox for the first time since his exit. 3 Harry Watling (left) was part of Michael Beale's Rangers coaching staff Credit: Willie Vass 3 Watling with Rangers star Findlay Curtis Credit: Willie Vass 3 He's now working under Rob Edwards at Middlesbrough Credit: PA Having seen-off Panathinaikos in last Tuesday's crunch opening Champions League qualifier, Rangers were back in friendly action on Saturday. Russell Martin's side welcomed English Championship outfit Middlesbrough to Govan for their final friendly clash of the summer. The Gers boss was able to give a number of squad players minutes but they failed to really stake a claim as they fell 2-0 down. Goals from Danilo and Findlay Curtis levelled things up as the entertaining clash finished 2-2. It's a new era for Boro too with Rob Edwards now in charge. The former Luton boss, whose name was linked to the Rangers vacancy at one point in time, has replaced Michael Carrick as boss. Alongside Edwards in the dugout at Ibrox on Saturday was a familiar face. Harry Watling previously worked as first team coach at Rangers and is now an assistant at Boro. Watling, 35, was a key part of Michael Beale's staff at the Light Blues during his rather ill-fated spell as boss. He'd previously worked with him at QPR. Russell Martin opens up after he got sent off by John Beaton in pre-season friendly vs 'Boro When Beale was sacked as manager in October 2023, his entire coaching staff was also dismissed, including Watling. That decision came after a horror start to the 2023/24 season. After leaving Ibrox, Watling landed the managerial role at Ebbsfleet United in September in 2024 but departed after only three months after one win in 13. He returned to football last month when he landed the key role alongside Edwards at Boro. Saturday's friendly clash offered Watling the first chance to return to Ibrox since his dismissal. And it's fair to say he enjoyed it. On Instagram, Watling said: "It was amazing to go back to Ibrox for the first time again yesterday. "A huge shout-out to the 8,000 @theboroofficial fans who made it electric. "So nice to see some old faces too from staff to players. "Thank you to everyone for making it such a warm welcome back. "Excited to begin another huge season." Middlesbrough face local rivals Hartlepool away from home in a friendly this Wednesday before taking on Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna at home on Saturday. The real stuff starts for them the following weekend with a home clash against Swansea to open the Championship season. For Rangers, the real stuff has of course already started. The Gers head to Athens to take on Panathinaikos in the second leg of their Champions League second round qualifier on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, the Scottish Premiership gets underway as the Gers head to Motherwell in the evening TV game. Have YOU got a point for Kris Boyd? Propper on 'eye opener' year at Rangers after Dutch return
The Dutch central defender joined the Ibrox club from FC Twente in his homeland last summer. After an unsuccessful year in Glasgow, he has now returned to his former team. "It was an eye opener for me," Propper told Twente's official YouTube channel of his Rangers stint after moving back to the Netherlands. "I wasn't aware of how foreign boys feel when they come to the Netherlands [before Rangers]. I think they need attention and time. "You have to be constantly involved within the team. I have noticed that abroad, it is different. Read more: "The team spirit here at Twente is so strong. That has been a huge strength at Twente. I realise now that it has to be kept in check. You have to invest in that. "You have to involve all the boys. That is one thing I want to take with me to the future." With managerial change at Ibrox, the future of Propper and several other Rangers players was uncertain earlier this summer. New head coach Russell Martin ultimately concluded the 31-year-old wouldn't be part of his plans. "It was a long wait," said Propper. "I wanted to know how it would go with Rangers. A lot happened there, and I wanted to see how it went. "I did pre-season and I played matches there. I don't think I missed much in terms of fitness "Of course I want to say that I had a great adventure at a beautiful club with a rich history. I always wanted that in my career. I think I want to look at a different mirror after a while. "I can say that I have done that now. It felt really good to come back to the club where I really wanted to be - where I felt at home. The first two days I immediately felt the feeling. "In a year you experience a lot. I have noticed that now. In a foreign country, certain things are different. I'm glad that I was able to experience that. "I played a lot of games. I had a lot of beautiful moments. Also a little less. In a year like this you experience so many things. "You have to experience that in your career. The way you deal with other people, you learn from that. I am very happy that I was able to do that."
