Royal Caribbean drops popular port from more cruises
Royal Caribbean passengers booked on many upcoming Caribbean cruises just got the kind of email from their cruise line that few cruisers hope to receive about their sailing.
Although there are worse emails you could get from your cruise line — like one telling you that your whole cruise has been canceled — few people want to hear that their cruise will miss one of the ports of call featured on the itinerary.
Some passengers select their cruises based on the ports the ship will visit, so naturally, news of port cancellations can be difficult to digest. What happens when a cruise line cancels a port stop? Typically, cruise lines will try to replace a canceled port of call with another, but that's not always possible.
In the case of Royal Caribbean's latest wave of cruise itinerary changes, not all of the altered cruises will get a replacement for the dropped port of call. Instead, those cruises will include an extra day at sea.
Why is Royal Caribbean canceling more visits to one of its most popular Caribbean cruise ports?
Doug Parker shared details on Royal Caribbean's port cancellations, and other cruise news, including a cruise ship protest in Amsterdam that disrupted a Celebrity Cruises port stop, on the July 31 edition of Cruise News Today.Royal Caribbean removes Labadee, Haiti from 23 more cruises
Cruise News Today Transcript:
This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.
Good morning, here's your cruise news for Thursday, July 31st.
More port cancellations — Royal Caribbean is suspending all visits to Labadee, Haiti through October citing safety concerns. Now the U.S. State Department maintains a Level 4 Do Not Travel Advisory to the area due to gang violence and civil unrest.
23 itineraries across five ships including Adventure, Freedom, Icon, Oasis and Radiance will all skip the private destination. Some cruises will replace the stop with ports like Nassau or Grand Turk while others will add sea days.
Royal Caribbean first canceled calls to Labadee back in the spring.Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship gets blocked by protesters in Amsterdam
And tensions are rising in Amsterdam over cruise ships. Environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion used small boats and inflatable unicorns to block Celebrity Eclipse from docking at the city's cruise terminal, delaying the vessel carrying nearly 2,800 passengers.
The protest which started around 4:30 a.m.; ended with five arrests after police eventually cleared the waterway. Protesters say cruise ships harm the environment and want them to be banned from Amsterdam altogether.
This follows a growing push to limit or relocate cruise operations away from the city center.

10 Differences Between The New Oceania Allura And Vista Cruise Ships
Allura is the second in the fleet of Allura class ships for Oceania Cruises. Oceania Cruises Oceania's second ship in its new Allura class has set sail on its maiden voyage taking travelers on itineraries around the Mediterranean Sea. The 1,200-passenger Oceania Allura follows Oceania Vista, which launched in May 2023 and is also currently sailing in Europe. Both ships will move to the Caribbean for the winter season and return to Europe next summer. New for Vista is a 129-day sailing, dubbed the Kangaroo Route, from Sydney to London visiting more than 80 ports in 34 countries, beginning Feb. 26, 2027. Oceania is well-known for its focus on culinary travel and onboard dining experiences, but also for service (there is a ratio of two staff for every three guests). While this is certainly not a surprise for a cruise ship, Oceania takes it to the next level. An onboard cooking school, elevated dining in specialty restaurants (all free for guests) and specialty chef partnerships lure foodies who recognize Oceania's sailings as a cut above other cruise lines that may focus more on shipboard amenities as their primary selling point. The pool deck on Oceania Allura Oceania While the two ships are nearly identical, the cruise line made some tweaks (as all cruise companies do) when evolving their ships as they join the fleet. This takes into account customer and employee feedback, historical data on what venues and areas of the ship prove more popular than others during its first year of sailing, and the latest trends in the industry. As a result, Oceania Allura looks very similar, yet has a few notable differences for the eagle-eyed sailor. This is what you can expect. Aquamar Kitchen on Oceania Allura Oceania With an 8-to-1 chef-to-guest ratio, there is no question that the caliber and quality of food is going to be elevated. In fact, half of the ship's crew works in restaurant and bar service. 'Oceania is definitely a line for foodies,' says Jason Leppert, editor of 'Compared to other lines, it offers more included specialty dining choices, making it a great value, especially on its newer ships like Allura.' The newest Oceania ship certainly allures with its wide array of new food and beverage options on board that are not currently sailing (or at least yet) on older sister Oceania Vista. A new creperie is on Allura and prepares a variety of sweet dishes, including Belgian and bubble waffles. Oceania A new French crêperie prepares the French pastry in both savory and sweet form, along with frozen yogurt and other treats like bubble and Belgian waffles or ice cream sundaes. This is all complimentary for guests and served in a care overlooking the pool deck and patios. Not only is this new to Allura, but also to the entire fleet as this venue is an entirely new concept for the brand. The Privee private dining room Oceania The French dining room Jacques, named for and serving classic recipes from well-known chef Jacques Pépin, is also new to Allura. This specialty dining restaurant has proven popular on other ships in its fleet (like Marina and Riviera), and Vista will eventually be getting its own Jacques by late 2025. Allura also showcases a new line of service and flatware, which will eventually be the Jacques standard on other Oceania ships. Also new to Oceania is more tableside preparation of certain dishes like hand-cut beef tartare mixed a la minute in front of guests. And in the Grand Dining Room, 270 new recipes have been added to Allura's menu, like a new eggs benedict menu at breakfast. Passengers can learn to cook recipes related to the itinerary's destinations. Oceania Another novelty for Allura is at Red Ginger, the Asian fusion restaurant found on other Oceania ships, but here it has a new Nikkei menu, blending Japanese and Peruvian flavors. A dozen new dishes are on the menu like a braised Peruvian short rib, soft shell crab tempura bao buns and chicken anticuchos skewers in a spicy huacaina sauce. Leppert points out that cooking classes are not new to cruise lines, citing brands like Explora Journeys, but that typically those lines have a higher price point. Oceania is the only line in its competitive set to offer such a robust culinary center experience. The Grand Dining Room serves three meals a day. Oceania Many are sure to book the new Gerard Bertrand wine pairing lunch, which leans heavily into his bio-dynamic and ecological wine labels. Each course has its own special wine selection, but this once-a-cruise special event does carry an extra charge of $175 per person. This is the only dining experience that costs extra and debuted on Allura. Vista will eventually get this wine pairing lunch later this year, and two more Oceania ships (Riviera and Marina) will follow suit in 2026. A selection of gelato and ice cream is now available by the pool in addition to Terrace Cafe, too, something not found on Vista when it launched. Terrace Café also has changes of its own, including a new Indian corner with 15 new menu items available at dinner and 45 new sushi roll recipes on offer Toscana restaurant has its own olive oil master that offers a menu of olive oils to pair with the food. Oceania For those that like consistency, many of the other onboard venues remain the same, including Toscana (with its own olive oil master), Aquamar Kitchen (with made-to-order smoothies and grain bowls) and the Viennese coffee menu at Baristas (although Italian brand Illy is no longer on offer). At the onboard cooking school ($89 per person), 24 cooking stations allow guests to learn how to make signature recipes from the destinations on the itinerary from licensed culinary faculty. Samantha Davis-Friedman of Travel Age West says Oceania's 'uniquely food-focused cruise experience' is popular with cruisers, so much so that it has become the 'highest-rated onboard experience for 14 years.' A few onboard shuffles The grand staircase in the cruise's foyer. Oceania Common when cruise lines launch a new series of ships, there are tweaks made to the design after crew give feedback on the success of the layout. For example, the library on Allura was moved to be next to Horizons Lounge and digital center, where guests can learn tips and tricks about photography and using mobile devices. On Vista, it is next to the coffee bar; Allura's new location allows the space to be much quieter. Another key change made to this ship targets solo travelers. While Vista has cabins designed for singles, Oceania Allura does not (although they can still pay a supplement to book a standard cabin for just one person). Environmental differences A stateroom with balcony on Oceania Allura Oceania For some travelers, it is the eco-friendly changes that Allura brings to Oceania's fleet that will most impress. Ship-building timelines mean that sometimes a new series of ships may not debut with the latest technology, if it is not ready in time. Such is the case with Allura, which relies exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO) instead of heavy fuel oil (HFO), giving it a more sustainable operation. This green option was not fully ready yet when Vista was being developed. According to Giuseppe Cusenza, project manager at the shipyard, this type of fuel 'produces significantly lower sulfur oxide and particulate emissions.' Oceania Allura is currently sailing in southern Europe. Oceania Other green features of Allura include onboard 'food digestors' that convert food waste to liquid and a waste heat recovery system that uses excess warmth from the engines to help with the freshwater desalination process (reducing overall energy usage). The ship also features shore power systems that help to reduce emissions while a ship is in port. There is also a trim stabilizer designed to reduce the ship's roll sensation by up to 77% by monitoring stability levels and adjusting its balance accordingly as well as a lower friction hull coating to reduce drag and improve efficiency. Horizons Lounge on the top deck of Allura. Oceania Overall, this ship is more efficient, allowing it to use less fuel and reduce overall emissions. There's also a system that can monitor the ship's needs and adjust energy usage in real time. While most people choose a cruise based on the itinerary, these changes, along with the line's culinary focus, give Allura a differentiating factor. As Davis-Friedman calls it, Oceania is a foodie experience from 'ship to shore,' and that continues with the debut of its newest ship. Carnival cruise passengers are fuming over another ‘money grab'
Carnival cruise passengers are fuming over another 'money grab' originally appeared on TravelHost. One of the biggest complaints Carnival passengers have about its recently announced Carnival Rewards loyalty program is that it appears to be designed to reward passengers for spending more than sailing. Replacing the cruise line's current VIFP Club loyalty program that rewards passengers simply for the amount of time they spend at sea, the new loyalty program rolling out in June 2026 will work more like airline rewards a first-of-its-kind move for the cruise industry, Carnival Rewards will link status to spending, rewarding passengers more for higher spending than for the time they spend sailing with the cruise line. Many passengers have called it a 'money grab,' insisting that Carnival has turned its back on true loyalty in favor of higher profits. Although Carnival had a valid reason for changing up its loyalty program, the cruise line seems to have gone too far by turning the program on its head. With the current VIFP Club program, Carnival learned the hard way that a program based solely on frequency isn't sustainable long term as they struggled to properly reward the huge number of passengers who earned top-tier status in recent years. Now, the cruise line is also learning that its passengers won't back down easily from a fight when they feel betrayed. The new loyalty program has made some passengers hyperaware of other new steps the cruise line is making to boost profits at the expense of passengers — like not allowing passengers to use their drink packages at its new exclusive destination in The Bahamas, Celebration cruise passengers question Celebration Key drink policy Some Carnival passengers booked on summer cruises to Celebration Key, which opens July 19, have recently expressed frustration that Carnival has decided not to allow passengers to use their Cheers and Bubbles beverage packages at Celebration Key. 'Please explain to everyone why the drink package isn't valid on the island? We've already paid for our drinks,' Andrew Wood commented on one of Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald's recent posts about Celebration Key. For many passengers, Celebration Key seems equivalent to Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, or Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, where drink packages are is using a technicality to justify charging extra for beverages on Celebration Key. 'This is not an island. It's part of the Grand Bahama and in the same as Grand Turk and Cozumel and other places that you go with our ships, the Cheers program is not part of those locations and it's not part of this one,' Heald explained. The brand ambassador suggested walking back to the ship to use your drink package as an alternative to buying drinks separately at Celebration passengers say Celebration Key beverage policy is another 'money grab' For Wood and other passengers, the island technicality isn't a good excuse. The fact that Carnival passengers can pay for drinks and other items with their onboard Sail & Sign accounts shows that Carnival could honor drink packages at Celebration Key, if the cruise line wanted to do so. 'It should have Cheers included. What a cop out explanation. If your Sail and Sign card is good there, the Cheers program should be good there too. More money grabbing like the new rewards (not) program. Cast the people aside who made Carnival the most popular cruise line,' David Tuthill many Carnival passengers, it looks like the cruise line has simply found a way to charge passengers again for drinks that they already paid for with the Cheers and Bubbles beverage packages. 'They are still selling alcohol in Carnival-owned venues. Carnival is receiving the money for the food and drinks purchased. None of the other cruise lines own the island their private area is on and they are all on a Bahamian owned island, yet the pre-paid drink packages work on the private 'island.' Carnival is simply double dipping,' Carol Lee added. (The Arena Group will earn a commission if you book a cruise.) , or email Amy Post at or call or text her at 386-383-2472. Carnival Cruise Line cancels five more cruises
Carnival Cruise Line cancels five more cruises originally appeared on TravelHost. Carnival Cruise Line is adding to its growing list of cruise cancellations caused by changes to its schedule for routine dry dock maintenance and refurbishment that cruise ships undergo every few years. Earlier this year, the cruise line cancelled multiple spring 2026 cruises due to revised dry dock plans, and now more cruises are being impacted by additional schedule adjustments. These latest changes come shortly after the cruise line was forced to cancel one Carnival Liberty cruise at the last minute due to a shipyard workers' strike in Cadiz, Spain that delayed the completion of the ship's maintenance work. Now, as the newly refreshed Carnival Liberty sets sail again, Carnival has announced the cancellation of five cruises planned for early 2027 on another one of its ships. Carnival Cruise Line cancels five cruises on Carnival Breeze Another change to the schedule for Carnival cruise ship dry docks has now resulted in five cancelled cruises on Carnival Breeze, which sails Western Caribbean cruises year-round from Galveston, Texas. The five Carnival Breeze cruises cancelled as a result of the schedule change are sailings that were scheduled to depart on Jan. 11, 2027, March 5, 2027, March 13, 2027, March 18, 2027, and March 22, 2027. 'Due to a short-term change in itinerary and dry dock plans (scheduled maintenance) for Carnival Breeze for the specific timeframe referenced above, we are sorry to inform you that the above voyages, including yours, have been cancelled,' the cruise line explained in an email to impacted cruise line is offering to help passengers find and book alternative cruise options, and protecting their cruise rates on comparable sailings in similar accommodations. Impacted passengers who book an alternative voyage will receive an onboard credit, which varies based on the length of the voyage. Passengers who opt not to reschedule will receive full refunds of their cruise fares and any pre-purchased items. Carnival passengers say the cruise line keeps letting them down Although the cruise line gave plenty of notice about these cancellations, passengers are naturally disappointed to have to revise their travel plans. Some even say the cancellations are another misstep in a series of ways the cruise line is letting down its passengers lately. In June, the cruise line announced a new Carnival Rewards loyalty program that will link status to spending when it replaces the VIFP Club program in June 2026. Many passengers have called the new program a 'money grab' that prioritizes profits over passenger have also recently spoken out against the cruise line for charging high prices for add-ons and limiting what's included at its new exclusive cruise destination in The Bahamas, Celebration Key. Many have used Royal Caribbean's CocoCay as an example of a cruise line private destination that gets it right. Although Royal Caribbean also charges steep prices for add-ons, passengers can enjoy unlimited food and use their cruise beverage packages on the island. At Celebration Key, Carnival passengers are limited to one complimentary meal and can't use their beverage packages. 'If Carnival is trying to up their game and compete with Royal, have any of the 'beards' been to CocoCay? Almost everything is included, including drinks since they have already been paid for if someone has the [beverage] package,' Carol Lee commented on one of Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald's Facebook posts about the included menu options at Celebration Key.
