A.P. teachers to continue protest against G.O. on school restructuring
Teacher organisations in Andhra Pradesh have voiced strong opposition to the proposed school restructuring program, expressing concerns that it will harm the education sector. They plan protests, including State-level demonstrations, to highlight their concerns.
Raising concern over 'categorisation of schools and the potential negative impact on students and teachers,' leaders of the Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation (APTF) have announced their decision to continue their protests in a phased manner. On May 5, they held mandal-level protests, on May 9 at district-level and on May 14, at the State level. Opposing what they called irrational policies being implemented in government schools, they said instead of revising the incoherent decisions taken by the previous government, the TDP-led coalition government, through G.O. 21, proposed to set up nine categories of schools, which may dismantle public education system.
The federation leaders said on May 16 and 17, teachers across the State would send messages via WhatsApp and Email to the Minister for Human Resource Development Nara Lokesh demanding reversal of the decision to protect the education sector. On May 18, 19 and 20, they would submit memoranda to the elected representatives, from village sarpanches to the Members of Parliament, including School Education Committee Chairpersons, Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishad members, seeking their immediate intervention.
Pointing out that no other State in the country had nine categories of schools, the leaders demanded that the government revert to the old system that existed before the issue of G.O. 117 by the previous YSR Congress Party government.
Leaders of the State committee of the Student Federation of India (SFI) have also condemned the decision, insisting that the government reconsider its stand.
In a statement on Thursday, the federation's State president K. Prasanna Kumar and general secretary A. Ashok said G.O. 117 issued by the YSRCP government on division of schools in six categories evoked stiff resistance by the stakeholders. The current government repealed that G.O. and instead, issued a fresh one as an alternative, categorising schools in nine categories.
They said the proposed restructuring would cause serious harm to the school education system and would facilitate privatisation of the education sector.

CPIM names M Swaraj as LDF candidate for Kerala bypoll on June 19
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday announced M Swaraj as the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) candidate for the Nilambur Assembly by-election in Kerala, setting the stage for a heated contest with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which has already named Aryadan Shoukath as its by-election, scheduled for June 19, was necessitated by the resignation of PV Anvar, who had won the seat twice with LDF support. Anvar stepped down after falling out with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, citing issues with the Chief Minister's political secretary and Additional Director General of Police Ajith Kumar. He subsequently joined the Trinamool Congress. His exit has sparked tensions within the UDF, as Anvar is reportedly opposed to Shoukath's state secretary MV Govindan made the announcement following the party state secretariat meeting. Swaraj, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly who represented the Tripunithura constituency from 2016 to 2021, hails from Nilambur in Malappuram district. He is currently a member of the CPI(M) state secretariat. He lost to Congress candidate K Babu in the 2021 elections. Announcing Swaraj's candidature, Govindan said the LDF aims to make a 'significant advance' in the Nilambur by-election. He noted that Swaraj was selected with the understanding that the by-poll would be among the most intense political contests in recent times. He also described Nilambur as a politically important sharply criticised Anvar, calling him a "Judas who betrayed the LDF" and remarked that Kerala is witnessing his 'pitiful state' as he struggles to find space within the Congress-led to the media, Swaraj said that Nilambur has been historically favourable to the Left and that many people across political lines agree that the Left is best suited to govern the state. He expressed confidence that the election results would reflect continued public support for the LDF government.'The contest is not against individuals, but against anti-Left forces,' Swaraj stated, calling on secular-minded voters to ensure the continuation of the Left to Swaraj's entry into the fray, Shoukath welcomed the contest. 'It's only when there is a defender on the field that the forward feels the thrill of scoring a goal,' he said in BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has not yet announced its candidate for the by-election. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has announced Sadik Naduthodi, the party's Malappuram district vice president, as its candidate for the upcoming Nilambur marks a shift in the party's approach, as SDPI had refrained from contesting the last by-election and Lok Sabha polls, instead extending support to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). LDF accuses UDF of cobbling together a rainbow coalition of communal forces in Nilambur bypoll
Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener T.P. Ramakrishnan said the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Opposition was scrambling to cobble together a 'rainbow coalition' of communal forces in the vain hope that it could trounce the ruling front in the Nilambur Assembly byelection. Mr. Ramakrishnan claimed the UDF lacked a credible development and social welfare agenda to offer Nilambur's electorate. He noted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remained undecided about fielding a candidate in Nilambur. He alleged the UDF's commitment to the principles of secularism was suspiciously ambiguous, and the coalition was desperately scouting for allies of all communal hues. 'The UDF is desperate to win Nilambur. It is a six-party coalition of convenience that will disintegrate if the people shun the alliance for a third consecutive time in the 2026 Assembly elections,' he said. Mr. Ramakrishnan said the LDF's emphasis on social welfare and development had provided tangible results for Kerala, including Nilambur's electorate. 'They have enthusiastically rallied behind Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] candidate M. Swaraj,' he said. Mr. Ramakrishnan said former Left Democratic Front Independent legislator from Nilambur P.V. Anvar had rendered himself a political non-entity by switching sides and aligning himself with the UDF. The Congress and the media had lionised Mr. Anvar as a muckraking anti-corruption LDF insider. However, Mr. Anvar's sensationalist value seemed shortlived. Mr. Ramakrishnan said the Congress had taken a page from the aged political playbook it had used and failed against the LDF in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections. Congress' potshots at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan based on Mr. Anvar's false accusations had ricocheted off the wall of popular opinion. 'Mr. Anvar's entry into the UDF is in limbo. The for-and-against Anvar infighting is the new battlefront in the Cold War between entrenched Congress factions in Kerala. Mr. Anvar's prospecting for a berth in the UDF has clawed open old fissures in the Congress. The facade of unity in the Congress is unravelling rapidly. The schisms will work to Mr. Swaraj's advantage in the bypoll,' he said. Mr. Ramakrishnan said the LDF would complete the formation of booth committees by June 5. On June 1, Mr. Vijayan would chair the election committee in Nilambur and address a mammoth LDF rally with other alliance leaders.
