Headingley Test: Why Ben Stokes chose to bowl first vs India - Ex-England captain explains

Ben Stokes (Pic credit: England Cricket) NEW DELHI: England captain Ben Stokes ' decision to bowl first in the opening Test of the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy against India raised eyebrows on a hot and sunny day at Headingley, but former skipper Michael Atherton believes the call was guided more by recent venue trends and England's strength in chasing than weather or intuition. Live Score: India vs England, 1st Test Day 1 "It was a really interesting call," Atherton said on the broadcast. "All the numbers say bowl – the last six wins here have come from the team bowling first. But cricketing common sense says it's a hot day, and it's 30 degrees over the next couple days." Stokes, who won the toss and immediately sent India in to bat, seemed to rely on Headingley's recent history in county cricket, where the pitch hasn't deteriorated significantly over time. Poll Do you agree with Ben Stokes' decision to bowl first at Headingley? Yes, it was a smart decision No, it was a risky move Undecided, need more information I don't follow cricket "I think in the end Ben has gone with the stats, what the pitch has done here at Headingley this year – it hasn't deteriorated – and also England's strength: they don't mind a chase," Atherton added. India, meanwhile, began their post-Kohli, post-Rohit era under new captain Shubman Gill, with debutant Sai Sudharsan and returning Karun Nair in the batting line-up. Shubman's Big Test Begins! India's Probable XI & Stokes' Mind Games | ENG vs IND 1st Test Preview Former India keeper Dinesh Karthik acknowledged the transition and noted the intangible absence of Virat Kohli's energy in the field. "When you're in a tough situation, you could look at Kohli and go, 'he's going to be there'. That is something India will miss," Karthik said. "His infectious enthusiasm, his ability to lift the team - that's not easy to replicate." Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

ZIM vs SA: WTC winning-captain Temba Bavuma ruled out of Zimbabwe Tests; veteran spinner to lead Proteas

Temba Bavuma with the WTC mace South Africa's Test side has been dealt a significant blow ahead of their upcoming two-match Test series against neighbours Zimbabwe, with captain Temba Bavuma ruled out due to a left hamstring strain. Bavuma picked up the injury while batting during South Africa's second innings on the third day of the ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord's. Despite visibly struggling with discomfort, Bavuma carried on batting before Pat Cummins eventually got his wicket. As per the official X account of South Africa men, subsequent medical assessments have confirmed a strain that will keep him sidelined, with the Proteas medical staff set to conduct further scans to determine the full extent of the damage and his expected recovery timeline. In Bavuma's absence, experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj has been named stand-in captain for the Zimbabwe series. Maharaj, who has previously led South Africa in the longer format when regular captains were unavailable, brings calm leadership and tactical prowess to a side now forced to regroup quickly ahead of the red-ball challenge. Yashasvi Jaiswal's Coach on England Prep, Opening Partner, & Playing Under Gill This setback comes after a period of jubilation for the Proteas, who claimed an ICC trophy in the WTC final after a long 27-year wait. Bavuma's absence will also leave a void in the middle order, where his resilience and knack for weathering tough phases have often bailed South Africa out of tricky situations, as seen in the final against Australia. With Zimbabwe showing steady improvement in the longest format, the contest promises to test South Africa's bench strength and leadership depth. All eyes will now be on Maharaj's ability to rally his troops and ensure the team stays focused despite losing its leader at a critical time. Poll Should Temba Bavuma have retired hurt vs AUS in the final? Yes No, it was a good decision to carry on The first Test against Zimbabwe is scheduled to begin on June 28, with both sides keen to open the new WTC cycle with a win.
