Pakistan legend questions Hesson's credentials as coach after disastrous loss against WI: 'Don't know what qualities...'

Pace legend Shoaib Akhtar questioned Mike Hesson's credentials as a white-ball coach after Pakistan suffered a humiliating loss at the hands of West Indies on Tuesday, losing the three-match ODI series 1-2 as a result.
After winning the T20I leg of the tour of the Caribbean 2-1 under Salman Agha's leadership, the Mohammed Rizwan-led side went 1-0 up in the three-match rubber, only for the hosts to fight back with a spirited chase and level the series.

Pakistan, however, suffered their first ODI series loss against West indies in 34 years after getting bundled out for a paltry 92 while chasing a challenging target of 295, thanks to Shai Hope's unbeaten 120 and pacer Jayden Seales' 6/18.

Akhtar, best known for being the fastest bowler in the history of the game, slammed Hesson for his 'bad policies' that left the Pakistani players exposed on a seaming track.
'Mike Hesson is a good T20 coach, but I don't know what qualities he has for ODIs. In this format, if you don't play quality players, this is what will happen. Unless you field established all-rounders, batters, bowlers, and spinners, you won't get a complete 50 overs. You can't just scrape by in this format,' he added.
'This is the result of bad policies, not the players' fault. Your players will always be exposed on seaming tracks. Now this rebuilding process has been given a new name, making a combination. Be thankful Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc weren't here. Wherever such conditions exist, our players will be exposed,' the 50-year-old added.
Hesson had joined Pakistan as their white-ball coach in May after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided against continuing with Aaqib Javed, who had served as interim coach across formats until the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.

As per details, in 2024, the PCB appointed five former national team cricketers, former all-rounder Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz, Misbah, Waqar and Saqlain, as mentors for a new project, the Champions Cup. The players were drawing PKR 5 million (over Rs 15 lakh) per month, but with the tournament scrapped in recent months, their roles became redundant. While Malik had stepped down, the other four ex-cricketers continue to draw their monthly salaries. According to the report, the Pakistan Cricket Board has sent termination letters to Saqlain and Waqar. Sarfaraz and Misbah have been retained by the PCB permanently, though they are yet to be assigned any new roles. According to the report, there is a chance of their salaries being reduced and the cricketers have already been informed about this. All five mentors had drawn criticism for receiving a hefty PKR 5 million per month. Those salaries drew criticism as they exceeded the pay of all but Pakistan's top-tier category A cricketers, Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan, in the central contracts pool. The Champions Cup had yet to generate any concrete commercial revenue. The PCB had invited team partners and sponsors, but as of last August, hadn't confirmed if any had joined. The Pakistan Cricket Board hoped that the mentors would step down, but with contracts guaranteeing four months' salary upon termination, none chose to resign. Objection is different," said Ghavri. "In the first place, you should've put your foot down and should've said 'No, I don't want to use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. The winner of the Test series between the two teams in England was traditionally presented with Pataudi Trophy. However, it was rechristened to Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year resulting in backlash. Ghavri has challenged to rename the Border-Gavaskar Trophy – played for the Test series between India and Australia – and then brace for the reaction from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. 'That is very wrong. Number one, Pataudi Trophy has been going on for a long time. The Australia-West Indies series has always been called Frank Worrell Trophy. What Tendulkar Said on Renaming While acknowledging that it wasn't in his power to ensure that Pataudi Trophy wasn't retired, Tendulkar did reveal he spoke to the administrators that the legacy should continue in some manner. '…I was determined to ensure that the (Pataudi) legacy was kept intact," Tendulkar told Revsportz. 'When I got to know, I called the (Pataudi) family and had a conversation. Thereafter, I spoke to Mr. Jay Shah (ICC chairman), the BCCI and the ECB, and mentioned to them that something had to be done to ensure the legacy stayed on." 'They heard my point of view, and thereafter we got on a second call where it was decided that the Pataudi name will be associated with the series, and the winning captain will be awarded the Pataudi Medal of Excellence. I have always respected my seniors, and did everything in my power to make sure that the Pataudi legacy continues to be associated with this series," he added. Ghavri though says Tendulkar could have done more to ensure the trophy was not discontinued. 'Objection is different. In the first place, he (Tendulkar) should've put his foot down and should've said 'Don't use my name because Tiger Pataudi's name is already there. He's one of our legends. If you want to give medals, use our name and hand it to the winning team. Trophy's name should've remained the same'," he said. 'BCCI is everything.
