PM's 8-year 'landmark' journey of GST meets Rahul Gandhi's 'economic injustice' cry
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, however, launched a blistering attack on the Modi government over its implementation of the GST. Responding to the Prime Minister's remarks, Gandhi wrote: "8 years on, the Modi government's GST is not a tax reform - it's a brutal tool of economic injustice and corporate cronyism. It was designed to punish the poor, crush MSMEs, undermine states, and benefit a few billionaire friends of the Prime Minister."Gandhi alleged that instead of the promised "Good and Simple Tax", what India got was a "compliance nightmare" riddled with a five-slab tax regime that has undergone over 900 amendments. He criticised the system for being confusing and bureaucratic, claiming that items like caramel popcorn and cream buns had been caught in its "web of confusion".advertisementHe further said the GST framework favoured large corporations with resources to manage its complexities, while small traders, shopkeepers and MSMEs struggled to cope. "The GST portal remains a source of daily harassment," he said.Gandhi claimed that over 18 lakh enterprises have shut down since GST was rolled out, and accused the government of weaponising GST dues to target non-BJP-ruled states."Petrol and diesel have been deliberately kept outside the GST framework, hurting farmers, transporters, and ordinary people," he added. He asserted that the GST, originally envisioned by the UPA to unify India's markets and simplify taxation, had been "betrayed by poor implementation, political bias, and bureaucratic overreach". Calling for reform, Gandhi said, "India deserves a tax system that works for all, not just the privileged few, so that every Indian, from the small shopkeeper to the farmer, can be a stakeholder in our nation's progress."WHAT IS GST?The Goods and Services Tax (GST), introduced on July 1, 2017, under the stewardship of then-Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, replaced a convoluted system of indirect taxes, including VAT, excise duty, and service tax-with a single, streamlined tax applicable on the supply of goods and services across India.Conceived as a transformative reform, GST aimed to simplify tax compliance, eliminate the cascading effect of multiple levies, and boost the ease of doing business. By integrating various central and state taxes into a unified framework, it sought to create a common national market and enhance economic efficiency.advertisementThe idea of a nationwide GST was first proposed in 2000 during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government. However, the proposal was bogged down by bureaucratic and political complexities and was eventually pushed to the sidelines. The concept regained momentum after the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assumed office in 2014. Intensive consultations with states, renewed legislative efforts, and sustained political will culminated in the passage of the Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill in 2016.Following ratification by a majority of states and the enactment of four key supporting legislations in 2017, GST was formally rolled out, marking one of the most ambitious overhauls of India's tax regime.- EndsMust Watch

Vadodara mayor's office vandalised: AAP protests arrest of 24 party workers
A day after the Vadodara city police arrested 24 workers of the Aam Aadmi Party's Vadodara unit for vandalising Mayor Pinky Soni's office, the party leaders on Tuesday gathered at the Navapura police station on Tuesday to protest against the BJP-ruled Vadodara Municipal Corporation. The AAP workers, who on Monday barged inside Soni's office, splattered black ink on the Mayor's cabin door and broke her name plate by stomping on it, were arrested later in the evening. On Tuesday, AAP leader Manoj Sarothiya arrived in Vadodara and attacked the BJP-ruled VMC for 'failing to provide amenities' to citizens. Sorathiya said that instead of providing answers to the questions, the mayor has been 'enraged enough' to initiate police action against AAP workers for 'raising questions'. Sorathiya said, 'In the last 30 years of BJP's rule in the city, Vadodara has witnessed floods every year… The AAP workers spilled some black ink and broke a name plate, which enraged the Mayor so much that a police complaint was lodged… I want to tell the Mayor, every year, Vadodara residents lose crores of rupees during floods and also lose lives. Why was no FIR registered at that time?' Sorathiya added, 'The condition of the roads in Vadodara is terrible. The office bearers of Vadodara have indulged in blatant corruption and led the city to this point. In the recent months, a project of Rs 1200 crore was announced for the Vishwamitri project, out of which, Rs 50 crore has been paid by the VMC and a same amount by the Irrigation Department for the flood mitigation work… AAP leaders are not scared of (the BJP's) lathis or the jails… If they cannot answer people's questions, they should resign from the post.' The Navapura police station, which had arrested 24 AAP workers, including 18 women late on Monday night for rioting, vandalism and damaging government property. conducted a panchnama of the spot outside the Mayor's cabin. Police officers recorded statements of the civic body's security personnel during the panchnama. Police Inspector MS Ansari said, 'The 24 persons were arrested and granted bail at the police station as per the provision of law.' Meanwhile, the Vadodara unit of Congress on Tuesday, also held a 'pothole tour' of the Mayor's ward to 'showcase' the pits and potholes as well as the garbage heaps strewn on the roads. Vadodara City Congress President Rutvij Joshi said, 'The Vadodara city Congress has initiated a campaign 'Khadodara darshan', to showcase the apathy of the civic body and the condition of the roads and sanitation in the city during the monsoon'. 'We started with Ward 4, which is the Mayor's Ward… In several places, entire stretch of roads have been dug up by the civic body on the pretext of pre-monsoon work but they have not been filled up and levelled, making it dangerous as there have been multiple instances of people being injured. In one of the cases, an auto driver was killed due to a pothole in another part of the city,' Joshi added. Mayor Pinky Soni remained unavailable for her remarks over the issue.

Assam: Six detained after plastic bottle hurled at CM's convoy
Guwahati: A day after a plastic water bottle was hurled at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's convoy during his visit to Golaghat, police on Tuesday detained six individuals, including Congress workers, sparking a political clash between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. Among those detained are Pallab Chetia, secretary of the Golaghat District Congress Committee, and Rahul Phukan, son of a former Block Congress Secretary. Both are reportedly associates of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi. Golaghat MLA Biswajit Phukan (BJP) linked the act to the Congress's "politics of disruption," citing historical references like the Emergency and the 1983 elections. "The Chief Minister came with a development agenda, but Congress cannot tolerate his popularity," he said. The incident, captured on video, shows the bottle being thrown at the convoy, though no injuries or damage were reported. Assam Power Minister Prasanta Phukan called it a "serious security breach" and demanded a security review, alleging an "attempt on the Chief Minister's life." The BJP also staged protests in Dibrugarh, condemning the act. The Congress, however, dismissed the allegations as politically motivated. Congress spokesperson Rituporno Konwar claimed four Youth Congress members were "illegally detained" an hour before the incident during a separate protest against cattle theft. "If they weren't present, how could they have thrown the bottle? This is a tactic to suppress dissent," he said. Sarma downplayed the incident with sarcasm, but the opposition accused the BJP of exaggerating the event to target Congress workers. The case has intensified scrutiny over security lapses and political vendettas in Assam. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah has condemned the incident of attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma and said, 'It is very unfortunate that someone threw a bottle on his convoy. The act is condemnable. Congress believes in democratic agitation and protest.' Dhubri Congress MP Rakibul Hussain said, 'I was also attacked by a few miscreants on the road; however, at that time, the Chief Minister took a potshot at me.'
