2 Days Before Execution, Supreme Court To Hear Plea Today To Save Kerala Nurse Nimisha Priya

Last Updated: The Supreme Court will hear a plea seeking urgent diplomatic intervention to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen on July 16. Two days before her execution, a plea seeking direction to the Centre to use diplomatic channels to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya will be heard by the Supreme Court on Monday. Thirty-eight-year-old Nimisha Priya, from Palakkad district of Kerala, will be executed in Yemen on July 16 for murder charges. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta is likely to hear the matter. The plea was filed by an organisation, 'Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council', which is extending legal support to assist the nurse, and cited a media report that stated that the tentative date for execution of Priya has been fixed as July 16 by the Yemeni administration. The matter was mentioned for urgent hearing on July 10 after advocate Subhash Chandran KR said diplomatic channels need to be explored at the earliest. He had submitted that payment of blood money to the family of the deceased permissible under Sharia law can be explored. The family of the deceased may pardon the Kerala nurse if blood money is paid, he submitted. The bench asked the counsel to serve a copy of the petition to the Attorney General and sought his assistance. Nimisha Priya was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023. She is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen. On Saturday, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal claimed that the central government was not taking any steps to intervene with the execution of Nimisha Priya. Venugopal contended that it was 'sad" that the Centre was not showing any urgency in the matter despite the issue being brought to the attention of the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Ministry. The AICC general secretary, who is also the MP from Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency, in a post on X, wrote that the death sentence imposed on Priya was a 'grave travesty of justice". view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 08:03 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Andhra Pradesh bags 10 awards

Vijayawada: Complementing the Centre's efforts to foster balanced regional development across all districts of the country, Andhra Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone, securing 10 prestigious awards under the 'One District – One Product' (ODOP) initiative. This national recognition highlights the state's rich heritage and prowess in handlooms and handicrafts as well as agricultural produce. The ODOP initiative is aimed at nurturing balanced regional development across the country by selecting, branding, and promoting one product from each district of the country. According to RP Sisodiya, Special Chief Secretary to the Government (Handlooms and Textiles), seven of the awards for AP were for handloom as well as handicraft products and two for agriculture-based products. Additionally, Andhra Pradesh received an award in the inter-state ODOP category, the details of which will be announced on Monday at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, where Union Minister Piyush Goyal will present the awards. Sisodiya attributed these accolades to the focused efforts of the Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who has prioritised the revival and promotion of traditional crafts and rural livelihoods. The award-winning products include Bobbili Veena (Vizianagaram), Etikoppaka toys (Anakapalli), Peddapuram silk sarees (Kakinada), Chirala silk sarees (Bapatla), Venkatagiri sarees (Tirupati), Narasapur crochet lace (West Godavari) and Dharmavaram silk sarees (Sri Sathya Sai) in the Handloom and Handicrafts category. In the Agricultural Products category, Guntur chilli and cashew from Srikakulam won the awards. The Special Chief Secretary said it was a matter of pride that AP had been selected in the inter-state ODOP category, the specific segment of which would be revealed during the ceremony. Sisodiya appreciated AP for achieving such national recognition within just one year of the coalition government taking office. According to state officials, the state government is actively working to bring more products under the ODOP framework. Chief Minister Naidu has already engaged with the Central government, advocating for the inclusion of banana from Kadapa, tomato from Chittoor, and groundnut from Anantapur in the ODOP scheme. The larger goal is to ensure that each district in Andhra Pradesh is represented by a signature product, thereby boosting local industries and empowering producers. The plethora of awards for AP is expected to significantly enhance marketing and sales of traditional handloom and handicraft products. Special training programmes are being organized for artisans, infusing fresh enthusiasm among them. Sisodiya acknowledged the crucial role played by the central government, alongside the Chief Minister's support, in AP securing this recognition. To further bolster the handloom sector, the state government will launch a free electricity scheme for weavers on August 7, coinciding with National Handloom Day. Under this initiative, 200 units of power would be provided free to handloom operators and 500 units free power to power-loom operators. On the same day, the government will release thrift fund contributions to weavers, fulfilling a key pre-election promise made by Chief Minister Naidu and Minister Lokesh to the weaving community. Efforts are lso underway to expand the marketing network for handloom products. Currently, 97 APCO showrooms operate across the state, with plans to open more outlets to improve access and visibility for locally produced garments. E-commerce platforms are also being utilised to boost sales.

Nuke law recast expected to cap supplier liability

Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads A More Viable Framework Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Draft in Making India is considering a total recast of laws governing atomic energy , including the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act, said people familiar with the matter. In particular, the revamp will seek to address the open-ended liability of suppliers under the current law as the Centre seeks to rope in private aims to expand its nuclear energy capacity to 35-40 GW by 2035 and 100 GW by 2047. Policymakers are of the view that the laws require changes if the target is to be met. India currently has 22 operating reactors, with an installed capacity of 6,780 MW. 'Instead of multiple piecemeal changes, there is a thinking that the laws be rewritten completely,' said one of the persons Atomic Energy and CLND Acts were introduced in the context of a state-owned nuclear thrust. Now, however, 'The idea is to encourage private sector participation and not discourage it,' the person liability law, envisaged as a safeguard against fallout after any accident, has been a long-standing concern of potential Section 6(1) of the CLND Act caps the total liability for each nuclear incident at 300 million special drawing rights, a reserve asset defined by the International Monetary Fund and equivalent currently to Rs 3,700 6(2) sets the operator's maximum liability at Rs 1,500 suppliers' worries stem from Section 17, which allows for a potentially large liability. This states that the operator will have recourse to liability claims where 'the nuclear incident has resulted as a consequence of an act of supplier or his employee, which includes supply of equipment or material with latent defects of substandard services.'This imposes unlimited liability on a supplier, said one of the persons cited.'A supplier may be sourcing or subcontracting various inputs from other suppliers,' the person said. 'Besides, a plant has several components and so liability cannot be that of a single supplier.'According to ongoing deliberations, the liability of a supplier to a nuclear operator would be capped at a certain defined value. Some liability beyond that amount would likely be assumed by the government, said a third person.A nuclear fund could be created as proposed in the current CLND, but with a more defined contribution from the operator that could be based on each unit of power generated.'Hectic drafting exercise is on, along with discussions,' the person said. 'These would also be discussed with stakeholders before being put up for the Cabinet nod.' The government is keen to get the legislation through the Parliament in the current calendar year, he added. An inter-ministerial committee is firming up changes to the proposed recast would also take into account global best practices and conventions to which India is a signatory. While India has signed the Convention of Supplementary Compensation (CSC), it's yet to ratify the accord.
