The Hockey News Predicts The 2025 WHL Playoffs
After a thrilling 2024-25 regular season, the 2025 WHL Playoffs are finally here. All 16 teams will be in action on Friday as the race for the Ed Chynoweth Cup begins. In honor of the start of the playoffs, here are the predictions from THN's WHL team.
Round 1:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Swift Current Broncos in 4Edmonton Oil Kings over Prince Albert Raiders in 7Calgary Hitmen over Saskatoon Blades in 5Lethbridge Hurricanes over Brandon Wheat Kings in 7Everett Silvertips over Seattle Thunderbirds in 6Victoria Royals over Tri-City Americans in 6Spokane Chiefs over Vancouver Giants in 5Prince George Cougars over Portland Winterhawks in 5
Round 2:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Edmonton Oil Kings in 6Calgary Hitmen over Lethbridge Hurricanes in 6Everett Silvertips over Victoria Royals in 5Spokane Chiefs over Pince George Cougars in 7
Conference Championships:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Calgary Hitmen in 7Everett Silvertips over Spokane Chiefs in 6
There's no other way this could go. They are two of the most dominant teams in recent memory, both with incredibly deep lineups and an ability to score at any time. In goal, Jesse Sanche (Everett) and Harrison Meneghin (Medicine Hat) are very impressive netminders and mentally strong at that. With this being the Medicine Hat Tigers' first shot at a title since the 2006-07 season, the team will be hungry- and they've got the same coach from that season. The Everett Silvertips have more recent playoff experience, making the finals in 2018 and a second-round appearance in 2024, so they do have a minor edge.
WHL Final:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Everett Silvertips in 7
At the end of it all, the X-factor of this series will be the youngster: Gavin McKenna. McKenna has put up video game numbers in his second full season in the WHL, and while the playoffs present a different beast, the Whitehorse product has shown an ability to take any game over he wants. This series should go no less than seven games, and while it may seem like the obvious pick for a final two, it just makes sense.
Round 1:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Swift Current Broncos in 5Prince Albert Raiders over Edmonton Oil Kings in 5Calgary Hitmen over Saskatoon Blades in 5Lethbridge Hurricanes over Brandon Wheat Kings in 6Everett Silvertips over Seattle Thunderbirds in 5Victoria Royals over Tri-City Americans in 4Spokane Chiefs over Vancouver Giants in 5Portland Winterhawks over Prince George Cougars in 6
Round 2:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Prince Albert Raiders in 6Calgary Hitmen over Lethbridge Hurricanes in 6Everett Silvertips over Portland Winterhawks in 5Spokane Chiefs over Victoria Royals in 7
Conference Finals:
Medicine Hat Tigers over Calgary Hitmen in 7Spokane Chiefs over Everett Silvertips in 6
The Medicine Hat Tigers and Spokane Chiefs are built for runs to the Conference Finals. Spokane has assembled one of the most dominant lines in the CHL, while Medicine Hat has one of the most dynamic players ever to play in the WHL. While the Conference Finals will be close, it feels like dystany that the Tigers and Chiefs will battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
WHL Final:
Spokane Chiefs over Medicine Hat Tigers in 7
As for who will be off to Rimouski to battle for the Memorial Cup, that would be Spokane. Outside of the Andrew Cristall, Berkly Catton, and Shea Van Olm line, the Chiefs have assembled a very deep team that features Brayden Crampton, Mathis Preston, Saige Weinstein, Rasmus Ekström and Chase Harrington, to name a few. While Medicine Hat has tons of talent, including Gavin McKenna, Oasiz Wiesblatt, and Tanner Molendyk, 2025 feels like the year Spokane returns to the Memorial Cup.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are in their hockey era. Kelce, star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Swift, a 14-time Grammy winner, traded in a football for a hockey puck on Thursday and traveled to Sunrise, Florida, for Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. The duo was spotted walking to their suite at Amerant Bank Arena as nearby fans applauded. Kelce donned a red long-sleeve shirt and matching shorts, which he paired with a baseball cap and pair of white sneakers. Swift opted for an all-white, two-piece getup that she paired with white heeled boots and her signature red lip. STANLEY CUP FINAL, GAME 4: Live updates, score, highlights The power couple first broke the internet in September 2023 when Swift accepted Kelce's invitation to watch him play at Arrowhead Stadium after he watched her rock the same stadium during her wildly popular "Eras Tour." She was prominently featured during FOX's game broadcast while sitting next to Kelce's mother Donna in a suite. Swift and Kelce were later spotted leaving together in a convertible after the Chiefs' blowout win over the Chicago Bears, not only fueling dating rumors, but setting the entire internet on fire. When Swift is not touring the world or cheering on Kelce at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium, the duo has frequently held date nights at various sporting events. Kelce and Swift attended the 2024 U.S. Open men's final alongside Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany Mahomes. One month later, the couple attended Game 1 of the ALCS between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians. Swift was also at Kelce's side after the Chiefs' Super Bowl 59 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans in February. Swift previously starred in a commercial for the NHL's Nashville Predators in 2008. "Come on! Taylor Swift at a Predators game? You're crazy," the commercial says. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's Decision Shows Where Loyalty Lies
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's Decision Shows Where Loyalty Lies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his girlfriend, 14-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift, had themselves a weekend. With Chiefs mandatory minicamp scheduled to begin on June 10, Kelce took advantage of the free time beforehand. Advertisement The two were spotted in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the wedding of Kelce's cousin, Tanner Corum, who tied the knot with Samantha Peck. Photos of them quickly emerged on social media, sharing smiles with family and others. After the wedding, Kelce headed to Kiawah Island in South Carolina, where he linked up with retired NFL tight end and Fox broadcaster Greg Olsen on Monday. The Chiefs star hit the links and took part in Olsen's fourth annual HEARTest Yard Celebrity Classic golf tournament. Kelce and Swift were invited to another wedding over the weekend, on Saturday in Chicago. It was the wedding of Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet, who married his girlfriend, Emily Jarosz. Advertisement On Monday afternoon, @elliestyled shared a recap of Kmet's special day, sharing plenty of photos and videos. In the recap, there was a photo of Kelce and Swift's table card. Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's table card at Cole Kmet's wedding.@elliestyled/Instagram Kelce and Kmet have built a friendship through football and both being tight ends in the NFL. However, it's clear that Kelce and Swift's loyalty lies with family over friends, as they chose to attend his cousin's wedding instead. It simply would have been too much travel for Kelce to go from Knoxville to Chicago to Kiawah Island all within that short time frame. Kelce's Chiefs and Kmet's Bears won't play each other in the 2025-26 regular season, but they are set to face off in the third and final preseason game. Advertisement That game will be on Aug. 22 in Chicago, with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET. Thunder vs. Pacers: T.J. McConnell is having his NBA Finals moment in Indiana — 'You have to play fearless'
INDIANAPOLIS — T.J. McConnell chuckles at it instead of taking it as an insult, the whole 'great white hope' thing assigned to him by Tyrese Haliburton. But it seems to work in Indianapolis. If it was an inside joke, it made it to the outside world on the NBA's biggest stage. Advertisement 'No, it's funny because all year he's been saying it's (Pacers rookie Johnny) Furphy,' McConnell told Yahoo Sports. 'So the fact that he brought it back up, I guess he said there's, like, a transition period from me to Furphy.' If he keeps having nights like Game 3, giving the Oklahoma City Thunder nightmares with their eyes open, any nickname will do. Whenever it seemed like the Pacers were in a lull, in need of a spark, there was McConnell with one of his three backcourt steals — he had five overall as the Pacers took control of the Finals series with a 116-107 win at home Wednesday night. 'We need all of our guys to bring whatever is their thing to our thing and have it be part of our thing, you know,' Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said Wednesday night. 'But he's a guy that inspires a lot of people. He inspires our team a lot.' Advertisement He played only 15 minutes, but it felt like he was out there all night, as he made every minute count, scoring 10 points with 5 assists and being a plus-12. He was the first bench player ever to record 10 points, 5 assists and 5 steals in an NBA Finals game since the league started recording steals in 1973-74. His plays got the crowd energized after moments of nervous energy that was palpable in the building. 'It's a feel thing when I'm trying to inject energy into the game and get the crowd involved,' McConnell said. 'And you know, when our crowd's into it, they've willed us to wins throughout the season.' It was McConnell and Bennedict Mathurin providing the extra energy while the Thunder players looked a bit on the fatigued side. Mathurin scored 27 points in just 22 minutes of game time, and Obi Toppin had an arena-shaking follow-up dunk late that seemed to declare matters for the night. Mathurin's playing time has increased in every game, but there's always a looking-over-your-shoulder feeling for reserves. Advertisement 'I feel like it's a going down swinging type thing where you have to play fearless and mistakes are going to happen,' McConnell said. 'So there's a point in the game where you want to be in there, but it's time for the starters to come back in. "Obviously, as a competitor, you want to play. So I try to tell the guys, you know, just we need to go out there and do our job for whenever we're out there.' McConnell has gotten votes for Sixth Man of the Year twice during his six years with the Pacers, after being in Philadelphia for four years during the 'Process' era for the 76ers. That makes him among the most experienced players on this team. That makes him valuable. 'Besides Pascal (Siakam) and Thomas (Bryant), none of us have Finals experience,' McConnell said. 'So obviously very grateful to be here and play in front of that crowd like we did yesterday. We're excited, but we know there's still a lot of work left.'
