U.S. News Unveils the 2025 Best Cars for Families

The Mazda CX-70, Kia EV9 and Jeep Wagoneer L each capture first-time wins.
WASHINGTON, March 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in rankings and consumer advice, today announced its 2025 Best Cars for Families awards. U.S. News evaluated 100 vehicles and named winners across nine categories.
'When it comes to shopping for the right car, those with families have an array of considerations that will play a vital role in their decision-making,' said Alex Kwanten, U.S. News managing editor, Autos. 'Whether a family's needs call for a midsize sedan, a large three-row SUV or something in between, the 2025 Best Cars for Families offer something for everyone. The awards recognize new models from nine automotive segments, and each winner offers an outstanding blend of space, safety, reliability, convenience and connectivity.'
Honda and Kia tied for the most awards this year, with two each. A standout for its combination of comfort, fuel efficiency, solid safety tech and family-friendly features, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid was awarded the Best Hybrid SUV for Families for the sixth-consecutive year and the 12th time overall. Also continuing winning streaks, the Hyundai Tucson is the Best Compact SUV for Families for the fourth time, while the Chrysler Pacifica is the Best Minivan for Families for the second consecutive year.
Both of the winning Honda vehicles took home trophies in their respective categories for the first time since 2022. The Honda Accord captured Best Midsize Car for Families, while high marks in safety and fuel efficiency helped the Honda Accord Hybrid win the Best Hybrid Car for Families honor.
Among Kia's wins, the Kia Telluride secured its sixth consecutive Best 3-Row Midsize SUV for Families award. A first-time winner, the three-row Kia EV9 SUV was recognized as Best Electric Vehicle for Families due in part to its spacious, comfortable and nicely equipped cabin.
Other first-time winners include the Jeep Wagoneer L for Best Large SUV for Families and the Mazda CX-70 for Best 2-Row Midsize SUV for Families. The Wagoneer L, a stretched version of the standard Wagoneer, boasts a vast amount of room for people and cargo, while the CX-70 has strong fuel economy, a high-end interior and excellent safety scores.
The 2025 Best Cars for Families award criteria looks at each vehicle's overall rating from the U.S. News Best Car Rankings to determine quality, incorporating elements like safety data, predicted reliability ratings, passenger and cargo space and the consensus opinion of the automotive press. The award methodology also considers the availability of family-friendly features such as in-car wireless internet, teen driver controls, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert and hands-free cargo area access. The winners were selected based on the highest composite score in each of the nine vehicle categories. Read more about our methodology here.

1981 Honda Accord SE Pushes Honda into $10K Territory

From the March 1981 issue of Car and Driver. The rep for the American Honda Motor Company, Inc., when he handed over the keys to the fresh-off-the-boat 1981 Accord SE, lowered his voice to a conspiratorial tone and said, "This is just a little testing of the waters—to see if Honda can sell in the BMW price range." "SE," in case you haven't heard, stands for "Special Edition," and those words will appear in delicate chrome script on the Glacier Grey Metallic flanks of a mere 3000 Accord four-doors this year. These specially anointed sedans will carry every option in the Honda book, including power windows, power steering, power brakes, Michelin radials, four-speaker AM/FM/cassette stereo, and air conditioning. Beyond that extends a long list of fitments that are not in the Honda book—at least they weren't until now—including power antenna, folding rear-seat armrest, alloy wheels, special gray deep-pile carpeting, and genuine Connolly leather on the seats. This, you might conclude, is intended to be one plush little unit. View Photos Patrick Bedard | Car and Driver Hearing all of this, and knowing how crazy car prices have become in recent months, we ventured a tentative "How much?" "Only $9950," was the answer. Aargh! A $10,000 Honda! "That's the five-speed. The automatic is 10,200," he said. How can a Honda cost $10,000? You guys keep it simple, right? You're the company that removed the stigma from small-car ownership. It was okay to have a Honda. Rich people bought them. But this Special Edition is a cop-out. Any company can be in the stigma-free-small-car business if it charges a lot of money. "Yeah, but the SE has all the stuff. You take your base Accord at $7435, add $600 for air, $500 for the digital cassette radio. Already it's $8500. This is a great deal." View Photos Patrick Bedard | Car and Driver Well, folks, maybe it is. But looking at the parts list, we come away with the idea that a few bits of trim add 1500 bucks to the price. Of a Honda. It wasn't so long ago that you could get a whole Honda for that money. For the full several hundred miles of our evaluation drive, this five-digit price kept nagging at the old editorial sense of value. This is a $10,000 Honda? And if it is, then what must rutabagas be going for down at the Hy-Vee? Certainly the Special Edition gives every indication of being a Honda. It has all those little idiosyncrasies we've grown accustomed to: the soft chattering when you engage the clutch and the gentle bucking of the engine when you ask it to accelerate from low revs. View Photos Patrick Bedard | Car and Driver But the old Honda charm is there, too. The engine climbs happily to the redline. The body doesn't creak and groan. The interior is perfectly assembled—nary a loose thread or smear of adhesive to catch the critical eye. And the luxury touches are so tastefully and confidently done. The trunk is thickly carpeted and fitted with small bins on the sides to hold minor objects that you don't want to roll around. The interior is a light dove gray, very popular at Ford a few years back but still fashionable enough. And the seats really are leather, exuding just a trace of the aroma that Connolly also imparts to every Rolls-Royce and Jaguar. Moreover, the Special Edition seems to work better than any Accord we've ever driven. The usually flaccid shock absorbers seem a bit tauter. The shape of the seat is correct, its depression for your butt back where it belongs now, rather than halfway forward in typical Japanese fashion. The power steering isn't as numb as it used to be. The directional stability is better. The car more graceful. Its mood more, well, BMW-like. Of course, we car critics can still find faults. The power-window controls are big and bulky, looking very much like the tack-ons they are. The stereo sounds as though it has K-mart speakers. And the radio itself has so many tiny buttons, with such small descriptions of what they do, that you practically have to pull over to the side of the road just to change from AM to FM. But it'll sure do some tricks, this radio, and the car around it is such a jewel that maybe $10,000 really is fair. Certainly there's nothing else on the market with similar quality, luxury, and efficiency for ten grand. View Photos Patrick Bedard | Car and Driver Just when we had convinced ourselves that there is value in a $10,000 Honda, we saw a dealer ad in the classified section of the New York Times brazenly offering an SE five-speed for $13,950. Apparently while the American Honda Motor Company is merely testing the BMW waters, dealers are jumping right in. They may be avaricious and unconscionable opportunists, the car dealers of this country, but one thing you have to give them: they do know what cars are worth. Kia EV Pickup: Everything We Know So Far About the New Electric Truck

If you're considering buying an electric vehicle, but you still need to haul things, there's a new Kia electric pickup truck coming to North America that you may want to wait for. While the plucky Kia Tasman truck released last year had a polarizing design, it was still considered a success. Now, Kia is celebrating by releasing a second pickup truck -- this time, an EV. Details are fairly slim right now. "Kia plans to introduce an EV pickup truck based on a new EV platform designed for both urban and outdoor use," the company said in April. "The vehicle will feature best-in-class interior and cargo space, a robust towing system, off-road capabilities and advanced infotainment and safety features." The inclusion of off-road capabilities would set the EV apart from the Hyundai Santa Fe, which is the only pickup truck that Kia or its sister company sells in the US. It'll be on a new EV platform, so it will also be set apart from the company's current EV offerings, like the Kia EV6. The infotainment will likely be similar to current Kia EVs and vehicles like the dual-display technology in the more recent Sportage SUV. Kia last week also showcased its more affordable EV sedan, with CNET on hand to see the latest 2026 Kia EV4. A Kia spokesperson told CNET in June that it has nothing new to reveal just yet on the Kia EV pickup truck. Will the Kia electric pickup truck be available in the US? Per the statement, Kia is expecting to sell roughly 90,000 of these new EV pickups per year, a lofty goal in a market where the Ford F-150 Lightning is barely hitting 30,000 units sold. By most accounts, it's an ambitious sales goal to hit for a vehicle that'll represent Kia's first attempt at appeasing the US truck buyer market. However, there is still room for optimism. "The models built on the eGMP line sold over 100,000 units in 2024," said Liz Najman, director of market insights at Recurrent, a company that offers independent insights on EV performance. "Moreover, like the EV6, Kia pickups will likely be made in the US, helping avoid costly tariffs that will drive up prices for consumers. It is likely that price will be a major factor for consumers in the coming years." Najman also said trucks were the two top-selling vehicles in 2024, so it's possible Kia can reach these sales goals, provided that the automaker can hit that sweet spot of competitive pricing and capability. "Electric vehicles are seeing strong sales numbers when they deliver on what customers want," she said, highlighting that with electric car sales, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Jeep Wrangler PHEV each sold over 50,000 units in 2024 and the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y sold over 150,000 and 370,000 units, respectively.
