Kirby Smart praises Gunner Stockton's leadership but he's not crowned Georgia's QB1 yet
Smart said Stockton's commitment to preparation is one of the things he admires most.
'He prepared every game as if he was the starter,' Smart said Tuesday at SEC media days. 'People can say that and say that's coach-speak, but he actually did it. He went in, watched extra tape, and he knew that in any point in time, he could be called up to go into the game and play.'
Stockton finished the 2024 season with 45 completions for 440 yards, a touchdown and an interception in five games: He stepped in for an injured Carson Beck and led the Bulldogs to a 22-19 overtime victory over Texas in the SEC Championship and started in the Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame. He was was 20 of 32 for 234 yards and a TD in the playoff semifinal.
It was enough to give Smart confidence that Beck's successor was already in the quarterback room.
'He didn't play in a normal environment where you've got a big lead, maybe you're beating an opponent,' Smart said. 'He went in against a top defense in the country in one of the biggest games of the season and performed well for a guy that had not gotten a lot of reps with the (starters). So I thought he handled that moment well and he taught a lot of our young players that you've got to be prepared and ready.'
Stockton earned the short trip to Atlanta for this week's event and was peppered with more questions than teammates CJ Allen and Daylen Everette.
'(Bringing Stockton) was a message about leadership,' said Smart. 'He's separated himself as a great leader of the team and you try to bring people here that can affect others. He's done that in spring practice.'
The starting job isn't necessarily a layup for Stockton. Ryan Puglisi is eyeing the role too.
'Ryan is doing awesome too. Ryan and (Stockton) are going to be competing for everything they do. Gunner knows he's got to go out and play well,' Smart said.
If Stockton stays the course, the offense will be his to lead on Aug. 30, when Georgia hosts Marshall in the season opener.
'He's done a tremendous job this summer. Talked to the staff about it and felt like the play he had at the end of the year last year... what he's done this spring, he deserved to come. He is the guy that leads that offense right now,' Smart said.

Rep. Jim Jordan may be deposed over OSU sex abuse scandal
Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan could be deposed over allegations he knew about the sexual assaults perpetrated by Ohio State University Dr. Richard Strauss but failed to protect the student wrestlers, according to a report. Jordan, chair of the House Judiciary Committee, served as the assistant coach for the wrestling team from 1978 to 1998. Students discussed their alleged assaults with Jordan and other staff members, according to claims made in a civil suit brought by dozens of former students against the school. The Congressman, who is not a defendant in the case, may be deposed as soon as Friday, four plaintiffs told NBC News. A lawyer for the plaintiffs confirmed to The Independent that Jordan is scheduled to be deposed. Jordan has repeatedly denied any involvement in the alleged cover-up. 'As everyone knows, Chairman Jordan never saw or heard of any abuse, and if he had, he would have dealt with it,' Russell Dye, a spokesperson for Jordan, told The Independent. In the documentary, Dan Ritchie, who wrestled at the university from 1988 to 1992, alleged that Strauss was known to conduct unnecessary genital exams with ungloved hands. Ritchie claimed Jordan addressed these rumors directly with his athletes, telling them: 'If he ever did that to me, I'd snap his neck like a stick of dry balsa wood.' Mike DiSabato, who wrestled for Jordan and was the first to launch allegations against Strauss, told NBC News that he expects the Ohio Republican to 'triple down' on his denials. 'I assume he's going to triple down and follow the same script he followed back in 2018 when he went on Fox and denied knowing about any abuse, denied being told of any abuse, never heard the word 'abuse,'' DiSabato told the outlet. Steve Snyder-Hill, a former OSU student who alleges abuse by Strauss, recalled in the documentary: 'Somebody asked me one time, they said, 'Are you a survivor or are you a victim?' He reflected: 'I had to think about that, and I thought, you know what? I'm a survivor of sexual assault, but I'm a victim of OSU.' He plans to watch the deposition Friday, he told NBC News. 'I expect him to lie under oath,' Snyder-Hill said of Jordan. 'I don't know a nicer way to put it.' Jordan's locker was very close to Strauss so Snyder-Hill doubts Jordan's claims that he didn't know what was going on. Snyder-Hill told the outlet: 'That's hard to believe.' Since the initial investigations emerged, the university has paid more than $60 million in settlement money to nearly 300 survivors. Michael V. Drake, who served as OSU president when the scandal broke and the investigations began, issued a statement on behalf of the school at the time apologizing 'to each person who endured Strauss' abuse.' He said: 'Our institution's fundamental failure at the time to prevent this abuse was unacceptable – as were the inadequate efforts to thoroughly investigate complaints raised by students and staff members.'

2025 Arizona Cardinals training camp roster preview: OL Kelvin Beachum
The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team. Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2024, questions they face and their roster outlook. Next up is offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum. Kelvin Beachum background, 2024 season Beachum, now 36 years old, enters his 14th NFL season and his sixth with the Cardinals. He was drafted in the seventh round in 2012 by the Pittsburgh Steelers and has started 161 games in his career. He has been a starter for almost his entire career, appearing in 189 total games. After four years with the Steelers, a season with the Jacksonville Jaguars and three with the New York Jets, he signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals in 2020. Almost exclusively a left tackle for the first eight years of his career, he became the Cardinals' starting right tackle. After that first season, he re-signed for two seasons and was their starting right tackle for another two seasons. In 2023, he signed a two-year deal again to return but moved into a backup role. He started the final two games of the year at left tackle after D.J. Humphries tore his ACL. In 2024, after Paris Johnson, who replaced Beachum as the starting right tackle in 2023, moved to the left side, Jonah Williams was signed to start, but Beachum ended up starting 12 games between left tackle and right tackle as Williams missed 11 games with a knee injury and Johnson missed the final three, also injuring his knee. Kelvin Beachum 2025 contract details, cap hit Beachum re-signed for the 2025 season, a one-year deal worth $4 million. He received a $1.5 million signing bonus and will earn a guaranteed $1.99 million in salary and up to $510,000 in per-game roster bonuses. His will count nearly $4 million against the cap. Questions he faces, roster outlook Beachum is ageless. He has no intention of stepping away from the game yet and retiring, and he believes he can still play. Can he continue to defy Father Time? Ideally, though, he won't have to have significant playing time because that would mean Johnson and Williams stay healthy. But he is a lock to make the roster and is locked in as the backup swing tackle, the first to fill in for either Williams or Johnson. Carlisle United chiefs bank on 'period of stability' under Hughes
Carlisle United can benefit from 'a period of stability' under Mark Hughes, reckons the club's chief executive. Nigel Clibbens said this summer was the right time to have continuity rather than more upheaval. Hughes is set to lead Carlisle into the 2025/26 National League season having initially taken charge in February. The experienced head coach agreed to remain at the helm this summer and Clibbens believes this is what United needed, after a 2024/25 relegation campaign when they had three different bosses. 'It's always a balance between change, and continuity and cohesion,' said Clibbens on big decisions at the tip. 'Because the reality of it is, whenever you change anything, it can be very, very disruptive. 'It's not like normal business, where people come and go, and life goes on. 'You change people in a football club, and it has ripple effects. 'So this is why, when you're changing head coaches and stuff, it's big, because it's not just one person – you end up with lots of people going. Hughes built a positive rapport with fans last season (Image: Ben Holmes) 'So we recognised that we needed a period of stability, so we're really pleased that Mark stayed.' Clibbens added that things have been 'very positive' at the club so far this summer, where Hughes' retention has come alongside changes in other areas. The head coach lost assistant Glyn Hodges and replaced him with first-team coaches Frankie McAvoy and Gavin Skelton, as Jamie Devitt returned to the academy coaching set-up. Other behind-the-scenes changes have seen Marc Tierney's arrival as head of football operations, in place of sporting director Rob Clarkson, and Martin Foyle replacing Greg Abbott as head of recruitment. Carlisle are currently coming to the end of a week-long training camp in south Wales, with the Blues preparing for their third pre-season friendly – and their first friendly open to fans – at AFC Fylde on Saturday. That is followed by further trips to South Shields, Harrogate Town and Chester before the league season kicks off at Woking on August 9.
