PM Modi before the Parliament session
NEW DELHI: PM Modi on Monday set the tone for the govt's response to the opposition's demand for a discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' and the Pahalgam attack by declaring India's retaliation against terrorist camps deep inside Pakistan a '100% success'.
Modi was speaking against the backdrop of the opposition's plans to stage protests in the two Houses as well as the govt agreeing to hold a debate: a rhetorical skirmish which, as per the decision of the business advisory committee, an all-party affair, will pan out for at least 16 hours next week. As soon as the Lok Sabha kicked off proceedings, Congress and its allies demanded that the discussion be held straightaway.

Congress also demanded that the Prime Minister personally respond to US President Donald Trump's claim to have leaned on India to get it to negotiate the suspension of
Operation Sindoor
.
In his address, Modi emphasised that the armed forces achieved the success despite him having publicly warned them days by amplifying the intent to 'raze the terrorists to the ground'.
'This monsoon session should be a victory celebration, a vijayotsav (triumph). The entire world has witnessed the strength of Bharat's military capabilities. During Operation Sindoor, the
Indian armed forces
achieved their objectives with 100% success.

Within just 22 minutes, the mission neutralised its target right inside the enemy's territory. I had announced this during a programme in Bihar, and our armed forces accomplished it within a very short time,' the Prime Minister said.
Congress members also insisted that leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi be permitted to speak, shouting slogans when he was disallowed by Speaker Om Birla, who said he could do so after question hour.
Pleas by defence minister Rajnath Singh and parliamentary affairs Kiren Rijiju that the govt was ready to debate all the issues and that it was for the BAC to work out the date and duration of the debate also failed to cut ice.
BJP, for its part, also sent the message that it was not going to chicken out of a fight. As soon as PM Modi entered the Lok Sabha after his media address, BJP and allied MPs greeted him with slogans of 'Operation Sindoor' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai.
In his customary remarks to the media on the inaugural day of the session, PM emphasised the global recognition of India's indigenous defence capabilities.
'When I meet world leaders, they express keen interest in Bharat's homegrown defence equipment. A unified voice from Parliament celebrating this victory will inspire our armed forces and boost research, innovation, and manufacturing in the defence sector, creating jobs for our youth,' he said.
Reflecting on the atrocities in Pahalgam, Modi praised all-party delegations that exposed Pakistan's role in global terrorism. 'Setting aside party differences, representatives from various states travelled to world capitals, successfully highlighting Pakistan as a hub of terrorism. Their efforts, in the national interest, created a positive atmosphere and opened global doors to India's perspective,' he said.
He said the success of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's historic mission was another reason for Parliament to celebrate.
Turbulence ahead
Congress has slammed the govt for not scheduling the discussion on Pahalgam attack and subsequent events in the first week, and criticised prime minister Narendra Modi for 'not giving importance' to the first session after the dastardly terror attack in J&K.
Deputy leader of opposition in LS Gaurav Gogoi said the govt did not put Pahalgam and other issues before the business advisory committee which met on Monday afternoon to decide the business of the lower house. He said the govt did not fix any date or time for the discussion, describing it as 'salt on the wounds of the grieving families'.
The opposition continued with its protest on the opening day of the session and forced adjournment of LS even when the House met after the BAC meeting, indicating that it is bent on maintaining pressure, at least for the coming days.

BMC plans hawker-free zones across all wards

Mumbai: A year after submitting a list of 20 hawker-free zones to Bombay HC, BMC is now planning to replicate the model across all civic wards. At a recent meeting, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani directed ward officials to coordinate with local police and identify specific stretches that can be strictly monitored and kept free of illegal hawkers. These areas will be jointly supervised by civic and police staff to ensure consistent enforcement and pedestrian safety. A BMC official said, "Complaints about hawkers occupying footpaths and narrowing walking space have been increasing, especially in high traffic areas. We have been asked to address this through targeted enforcement. The commissioner has also instructed that additional manpower and machinery be provided to wards on demand. Consistent enforcement will send a strong message to hawkers and discourage them from returning. " In May, a dozen housing societies from Thakur village in Kandivli East had approached Mumbai North MP and minister Piyush Goyal, seeking his urgent intervention to address growing encroachment by illegal hawkers in their locality. They said hawkers had taken over roads and footpaths, and claimed that no action had been taken despite repeated complaints and peaceful protests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Back Pain! It said it had to discontinue a valet parking initiative it had launched due to lack of official support. Citizen activist Nikhil Desai said effective action is possible if BMC and police work in coordination. "Dadar TT, which is on the list of proposed hawker-free zones, continues to be overrun by hundreds of hawkers at any given time. The only sustainable solution is to relocate them to designated hawking zones." He also recalled how in March a ward officer who took action against illegal flower vendors outside Matunga station was abruptly transferred after facing political pressure. Rajkumar Sharma, president of the Chembur-based advanced locality management and networking action committee, felt authorities keep passing the buck. "Ideally, BMC officials should act against such encroachments before residents are made to take matters in their own hands and go to court."

EC must stop SIR, says opposition; calls it ‘exercise of exclusion'

NEW DELHI: Ahead of SC hearing on special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, opposition INDIA bloc on Sunday alleged it is an "exercise of exclusion", questioning data released by Election Commission after SIR's first phase that 66 lakh people might be excluded on grounds such as "deceased, permanently shifted or untraceable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Congress functionary Abhishek Singhvi said EC should not show "institutional arrogance" with INDIA bloc parties from Bihar urging the poll panel to stop SIR as it will result in "large-scale disenfranchisement of poor and marginalised sections". "Recent pressers of EC and refusal to accept Aadhaar, EPIC, and ration card as valid documents clearly point towards the fact that the entire SIR process is a citizenship verification process," he alleged. EC responded by asking why opposition parties are trying to create "an impression that the draft list is the final list, which it is not, as per SIR order. " It said it is not able to understand the big fuss now, when a full one month period from Aug 1-Sept 1 is available to point out wrongful inclusion or wrongful exclusion of any name. "Why don't the parties ask their not 1.6 lakh booth level agents to submit claims and objections from Aug 1-Sept 1 ?" it asked. Gearing up to step up the protests both inside and outside Parliament, Congress, RJD, CPM and CPI (ML)-Liberation leaders at a presser expressed fear that many more people will be excluded from rolls during the verification process ahead due to lack of documents like birth, caste and domicile certificates. RJD MP Manoj Jha said the whole SIR process is based on presumptions. "Clearly, opacity has become the hallmark of EC functioning," Jha said. "There is no time or option for the right to appeal for people who will be excluded in the whole process. There are also numerous reports of people found alive who are included in the dead list," he alleged. On the number of deceased, CPI (ML)-Liberation Dipankar Bhattacharya said, "Does this mean that in just six months, around 22 lakh people have passed away? So, does this mean the EC's January 2025 summary revision was a flop?"

Bihar's draft poll roll may exclude 66 lakh names: EC

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Sunday said Bihar's draft electoral roll may exclude 66 lakh names as they had either become electors in other states or UTs, were non-existent, did not submit enumeration forms within the July 25 deadline or were not willing to register as electors for some reason or other. Of the 66 lakh electors, 22 lakh were found to be deceased, 36 lakh permanently shifted or untraceable, and seven lakh enrolled at multiple places. Over one lakh did not return their forms by the deadline. "Exact status of these electors will be known after scrutiny of these Aug 1. However, genuine electors can still be added back in electoral rolls during the claims and objections period from Aug 1-Sept 1," EC said in a statement. It said the seven lakh electors found enrolled at multiple places will be retained in only one place. EC underlined that submission of over 7.2 crore forms by electors in Bihar pointed to their "overwhelming participation" in the special intensive revision (SIR) of rolls. It said all aims of SIR - participation of all electors and political parties; no eligible electors - temporary migrants, urban electors, young electors - be left behind; assistance by election staff in enumeration phase; scrutiny of draft roll; and no deletion of draft electoral roll without a speaking order - have either been fulfilled or will be met. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo On achieving the aims, EC said participation of electors and parties was realised through involvement of field representatives of the 12 major political parties, such as district presidents and 1.6 lakh booth level agents. No elector be left behind was achieved with SMSes sent to 5.7 crore registered mobile numbers, allowing BLAs to submit up to 50 forms daily, and visits to electors' addresses. Outreach to temporary migrant electors was ensured with advertisements in 246 newspapers. This resulted in action by 29 lakh migrants - 16 lakh filled the form online and 13 lakh downloaded it. Regular involvement of electors and political parties was ensured by sending 10.2 crore SMSes to electors acknowledging receipt of forms. Lists of electors not found at their addresses or whose forms weren't received were shared on July 20 with the parties. On scrutiny of draft roll, EC said digital and printed copies of draft roll of each booth will be shared with political, adding no name can be deleted without notice and speaking order of ERO/AERO, it said.
