Perrie Edwards reveals pain of 'toxic' relationship before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain romance
The 32-year-old Little Mix star - who is now engaged to former Arsenal and Liverpool footballer Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - has opened up about the "pain" she felt because of her "first relationship" with an unnamed ex partner.
She told Paul C Brunson on the We Need To Talk podcast: "I think definitely at the time I thought everything we experienced in our relationship was normal.
"Because it was my first relationship, first love. I was like, 'Oh, this is how it's supposed to feel. It's supposed to feel a little bit toxic. In some ways, this is probably normal, right?'
"And then when I became single, I was almost thinking, like, I never, ever want to go through that again.
"I didn't even want to meet anybody. I was like, that's me done. I don't think I could bear that pain."
However, she has since realised the truth, while it took her some time to get used to how Alex handled things in their relationship.
She explained: "Now, reflecting back, I'm thinking, oh, that probably wasn't good. And I've noticed it a lot.
"Like in the start of the relationship, I would handle things differently with Alex, and he'd come at it with such a level head that it would throw me."
After getting engaged to Alex in 2022, she opened up about how "laid back" he is.
She said: "Little things might happen, and I'd think, 'Oh, now he's going to kick off, he's not going to like this.'
"And I'd be like, 'Oh, this happened.' And he'd be like, 'Alright,' and it would throw me.
"He's very mature. He's very laid back. He's very levelheaded. He's not the type to get mad or get angry or get funny about things."
Perrie did not specify which past relationship she was talking about in the podcast.
She was previously engaged to former One Direction star Zayn Malik in 2013, but they broke up two years later.
In May, Zayn reflected on their romance and told Nylon magazine: "From 17 to 21, I was in a relationship. I was engaged and [planned to get] married and I didn't know anything about anything at that point.
"I thought I did, because I was 21. I was legally allowed to do everything, but I didn't know s***."

Wild reason this pic angered football fans
A plus sized model has hit back following the worst trolling experience of her life, after being mistaken for the girlfriend of a popular English soccer player. Felicity Hayward, 37, was Britain's 'OG plus sized model' after being discovered by photographer Miles Aldridge in 2011. Recently, the influencer and activist shared a snap with Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice after attending an event for the football club and Adidas. 'Finishing a very fun day with the third kit house party with Declan Rice & @adidasuk,' Hayward captioned the images of the duo smiling arm in arm. As a huge Arsenal fan, Hayward accepted the opportunity of a meet and greet that was being offered at the event and had her picture taken with Rice. She shared it to Instagram and within 12 hours it had gone viral for 'all the wrong reasons'. Hayward said it culminated in the worst trolling she has ever experienced throughout her 14-year career as a model and content creator. One man posted this comment: 'Model girlfriends and wives and my boy Decs is stuck with this. I feel for you my boy. Know your worth and leave no one is gonna blame you.' Another said: 'Looks like his type … loves a fridge.' Hayward was understandably stunned at the vitriol aimed at her, just like Rice's long term partner Lauren Fryer has experienced. Fryer, who has been with Rice since they were teenagers and have a three-year-old together, ended up having to delete her social media accounts in April last year due to continuous abuse about her appearance and claims Rice could 'do better'. 'There are hundreds of comments about my appearance and my weight — 95 per cent of them are utterly disgusting and they're coming from full grown men,' Hayward said. She said the horrific trolls have wrongly made the assumption 'using their last brain cell' that she is Rice's partner Lauren Fryer. 'Now, Lauren is absolutely gorgeous and the issue isn't that people are suggesting I am her. It's about the fact that whether it is me or her in the image, they're using this opportunity to try and drag a woman down for her appearance,' she said. 'It's no wonder she left social media due to the amount of abuse that she got in the last couple of years.' Hayward said football is supposed to be about community, and if men aren't complaining about how women look they are complaining about England's Lionesses — the female football team — winning the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 final. 'I am not Declan Rice's girlfriend. There is nothing wrong with my weight, or his long term partner Lauren's,' she said. 'Just keep your mouth shut babe.' The abuse of Rice's actual partner Fryer appeared to begin in December 2023, when Rice was told that he 'could do better'. After five months of constant trolling, Fryer eventually wiped every photo from her account that boasted 70,000 followers. Love Island star Liberty Poole stepped in to defend Fryer, who is Rice's biggest supporter. 'I think she's beautiful this is crazy,' Poole wrote. 'What happened to celebrating different body types and embracing how we are all individually made. 'Beauty standards these days are unrealistic and everyone's gone mad because of social media. 'I'm going to keep preaching about it till I die. Time for change, this can't continue.' These gross comments aren't solely a Premiere League problem. Earlier this year, North Melbourne AFL Player Toby Pink married his childhood sweetheart Chloe after eight years together. However, when the newly married Mrs Pink shared her wedding photos, the comments were frankly vile. The comments on a celebratory article about their nuptials became about Mrs Pink's weight, to the point that AI summarised that the response was about 'beauty standards' rather than their wedding day. It feels important to point out that the comments weren't just critical of Mrs Pink's weight. They were cruel, degrading and hateful. And they were appearing faster than anyone could delete them, or possibly manage the situation. Someone called her a 'fridge,' another wrote, 'AFL player by day, pig hunter by night,' and one comment claimed she looked more like an AFL player than a bride. It left the 25-year-old human resources worker in a flood of tears, as she is not a public figure in any capacity, except for the fact that it turned out the man she fell in love with was decent at kicking a ball. It wasn't the first time Mrs Pink had faced some of these comments. She'd received similar slurs after attending AFL's night of nights, the Brownlows. This was just a whole new level. Mrs Pink, who is between a size 14 and 16, which is the average size of an Aussie woman, said perhaps the saddest part of the response to her wedding photos is that it was one of the few times she posted something online and didn't feel insecure about her weight.

Perrie Edwards 'embarrassed' after Zayn Malik split
Perrie Edwards was "embarrassed" when she broke up with Zayn Malik. The 32-year-old singer dated the former One Direction hunk from 2011 to 2015 and he was her first real love, so not only was she left devastated when their engagement ended, her heartbreak felt even worse because of the scrutiny the news brought. She recalled on the We Need to Talk podcast: "Tt was just a lot. … It was too much. It was just everywhere. It followed me like a bad smell... "I felt embarrassed. I felt weird. Really sad. Going through all these emotions and going through it with everyone staring at me was like, it was mortifying.' Perrie met Zayn - who went on to have daughter Khai, four, with Gigi Hadid - when she was competing on The X Factor as part of Little Mix and it was initially "refreshing" for them to bond over shared experiences but they battled to keep their romance out of the spotlight. She said: 'This was early days. It was all very new for them as well. 'I think meeting someone at that time in your career who's kinda at the same point is kinda refreshing. It's like, 'Oh, you get it.' 'It was pretty easy at first, [but] it got more difficult as it went on." The pair deliberately kept their relationship out of the spotlight as much as possible. Perrie explained: 'I think part of us keeping everything private was because it was nice to have something private in general. Everything else was just laid out. 'I think we didn't want to … I felt bad for the girls because a lot was made to be about him. It was the start of our careers.' The Forget About Us singer "learned a lot" from her relationship with Zayn but it led to her taking some fears into her current relationship with fiance Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the father of her three-year-old son Axel. She said: 'I think it maybe [thinking a romance can't be sustained] comes from past relationships and how the other person's handled it. Then you just assume, 'Oh, nobody's going to want this.' "So [I] think maybe my previous relationship made me think, 'Oh I probably can't have my cake and eat. I probably can't be a popstar and have a relationship.' It's one or the other. 'Reflecting back, I'm thinking, 'Oh, that probably wasn't good.' And I've noticed it a lot. 'Like in the start of the relationship, I would handle things differently with Alex, and he'd come at it with such a level head that it would throw me.'
