Jharkhand: CPI (Maoist) Manish Yadav with ₹5 lakh bounty killed in gunfight; another arrested
Another red rebel was arrested during the operation, he said. "Manish Yadav, who was carrying a reward of ₹ 5 lakh on his head, was killed in the gunfight with security forces. Another Maoist, Kundan Kherwar, was arrested," Palamu DIG YS Ramesh told PTI.
Kundan is stated to be carrying a bounty of ₹ 10 lakh on his head.
However, Ramesh said that the reward on Kundan's head is yet to be verified.
The encounter between security forces and Maoists broke out in a forest in Dauna under the Mauhadand Police Station limits on Sunday night, he said.
The operation was conducted barely two days after two Maoists, including JJMP supremo Pappu Lohra, who was carrying a bounty of ₹ 10 lakh on his head, were killed in an anti-Naxal operation by security forces in the district.
On May 24, Lohra, the chief of the proscribed Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a Maoist splinter group, and his associate Prabhat Ganjhu, the sub-zonal commander of the organisation, were killed during the operation.
Ganjhu was carrying a bounty of ₹ 5 lakh on his head.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jharkhand Police conducted the joint operation in the Ichabar forest region, falling under the jurisdiction of the Latehar Police Station.
Lohra was wanted in 98 cases, comprising murder, extortion, and arson, across several districts such as Lohardaga, Gumla, Chatra, Palamu, and Latehar.
Ganjhu was wanted in 15 cases, according to Ramesh.

Principal caught taking Rs 31,000 bribe from school van drivers
Surat: In a first such case, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) caught a principal of a govt secondary school for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 31,000 from two van drivers for clearing their bills under the state's 'School Transportation Scheme'. The Bharuch ACB team raided the school in Sarsad village of Jhagadiya taluka and caught the principal, Kalpesh Patel , red-handed while conversing with the drivers regarding the bribe and accepting Rs 31,000. ACB inspector MJ Shinde said Patel was drawing Rs 72,000 as a salary, and his wife is also posted as a govt teacher in Bharuch. He was the principal there since 2017. According to details of the complaint lodged by one of the school van drivers, Patel employed him to transport school children under the govt scheme. The accused demanded a commission of Rs 3,000 per month from the bills passed under this scheme. This included Rs 9,000 for three months of the current year from the complainant, Rs 13,000 from another van driver of the same school for the year 2024, and Rs 9,000 for three months of 2025, totalling Rs 31,000. UP DGP calls for heightened security for I-Day, Janmashtami celebrations
Lucknow, Aug 13 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh DGP Rajiv Krishna on Wednesday issued detailed instructions to maintain high vigilance and ensure effective law and order arrangements across the state in view of Independence Day celebrations on August 15 and the Janmashtami festival the next day. According to an official statement, the DGP has directed district and commissionerate police chiefs to list all the major programmes — including flag marches, Tiranga rallies, and cultural events — and make comprehensive security and traffic arrangements accordingly. Anti-sabotage checks have been mandated at all venues, along with roof-top deployment, strict access control at entry and exit points, and planned traffic diversions. The DGP asked to intensify security at railway and Metro stations, bus terminals, airports, cinema halls, shopping malls, hotels, guest houses, religious sites and other crowded locations. Continuous checking at state and district borders, functional CCTV surveillance and strict briefing of check-post staff have been emphasised. The DGP also instructed close monitoring of microlight aircraft, drones, paragliders and other unmanned aerial objects, prohibiting all unauthorised flights. Local intelligence units and social media cells have been activated to track activities of banned or extremist organisations, with directives for immediate preventive action wherever required. The district police forces have been told to verify tenants in the residential colonies, curb illegal arms and explosives trafficking, and ensure coordination with the civil magistrates, municipal bodies and utility departments for smooth conduct of Janmashtami events. Organisers of temple festivals, processions and fairs are to be engaged in advance meetings to resolve logistical issues, the directive said. All sensitive and communally vulnerable areas will have enhanced police deployment, flag marches and foot patrolling under the supervision of gazetted officers, the statement said. Videography and drone surveillance of processions have been made mandatory, along with the use of bomb disposal squads and sniffer dogs wherever necessary. The instructions also include ensuring women's safety through plainclothes deployment, keeping riot-control equipment ready, and maintaining police/PAC reserves at the district headquarters. Round-the-clock monitoring of social media platforms has also been ordered to counter misinformation or inflammatory content. Senior Maoist leader gunned down in Jharkhand encounter
A joint team of Chaibasa Police and CoBRA 209 battalion gunned down a senior CPI (Maoist) leader during an encounter in the forests of Goilkera in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district Wednesday morning. Police said the militant has been identified as Arun alias Varun alias Nilesh Madkam, an area commander of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit, hailing from Konta police station limits in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. An official also confirmed that he carried a bounty of Rs 2 lakh on his head. According to police, Maoist leaders including Misir Besra, Anmol, Mochu Anal, Aseem Mandal, Ajay Mahato, Sagen Angaria, and Ashwin have been actively moving with their armed squads in the Kolhan-Saranda region, allegedly plotting attacks on security forces and engaging in anti-national activities. On August 12, intelligence inputs suggested that top Maoist leaders and various squad commanders, identified as Ravi Sardar, Jaikant, Arun, Sandeep, Shiva, Rishibh, Upton, Sanat, Amit Munda, and Bhuneshwar alias Saluka Kayam Somwari had gathered in Kolhan to execute a 'major incident' ahead of Independence Day. Acting on the input, a joint operation was launched by Chaibasa Police and CoBRA 209 battalion. Around 6 am on Wednesday, the forces came under fire in the hilly and forested areas near Dugunia, Posaeta, and Tumbagada under Goilkera police station limits, officials said. The security personnel retaliated, forcing the Maoist squad to retreat into the dense jungle. During the subsequent search, the body of a male Maoist was recovered along with an SLR rifle, cartridges, and other daily-use items, officials said. According to the police, Arun had a long criminal history, including involvement in multiple murders, kidnappings, attacks on security forces, extortion, and offences under the Arms Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act across Goilkera, Sonua, and Tonto police station areas. The recovered weapon and materials have been seized, and further action is being taken in line with the National Human Rights Commission's SOPs, police said, adding that the anti-Maoist operation in the region is still ongoing.
