Doctor gets threat letter seeking 40L in Karni Vihar area, files plaint
DCP (West) Hanuman Prasad Meena said that the doctor, who runs a private clinic in the city, found the English-language note in an envelope near his home's gate Thursday while leaving to drop his daughter at school. The typed letter stated- "You don't realise you're putting your family's life in danger. Quietly hand over Rs 40 lakh." The doctor immediately filed a complaint at Karni Vihar police station.
Meena said investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from Wednesday night when suspects allegedly approached the house under cover of darkness.
The English composition of the threat has raised questions as it differs from typical extortion patterns in the region. Police are examining all angles but have not yet identified suspects.
"The language of the letter does not suggest anything pointing to the involvement of a gang; it appears more to be the handiwork of a former employee or someone acquainted with the doctor who targeted him," Meena told TOI.
The city police also said that efforts are underway to track down the suspect as soon as possible and are enhancing the security of the doctor. "The language of the letter is incoherent and improper. We believe that the man behind the letter is not very well-educated," Meena said, adding that despite this, police were "leaving no stone unturned" to track down the suspect at the earliest.

SC confirms Medha Patkar's conviction in defamation case by Delhi LG Saxena
The Supreme Court on Monday confirmed the conviction of activist Medha Patkar in a 25-year-old defamation case filed by Delhi LG V K Saxena. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and N Kotiswar Singh said it was not inclined to interfere with the Delhi high court order on the matter that released Patkar on 'probation of good conduct' but required her to appear before the trial court once every three years. It added, 'However, taking into consideration the submission of the counsel for the petitioner the penalty imposed stands set aside and we further clarify that the supervision order will not be given effect.' The high court on July 29 upheld the conviction and punishment awarded to 70-year-old Patkar. Saxena filed the case 25 years ago when he was heading an NGO in Gujarat. The high court had said there was illegality or material irregularity in the findings of the trial court and added that the order of conviction was passed after due consideration of evidence and the applicable law. It had said that Patkar failed to demonstrate any defects in the procedure which was followed or any error in the law which resulted in the miscarriage of justice. The high court also upheld the order on sentence, where Patkar was released on 'probation of good conduct', and said it did not require any interference. Probation is a method of non-institutional treatment of offenders and a conditional suspension of sentence in which the offender, after conviction, is released on bond of good behaviour instead of being sent to prison. The high court, however, had modified the condition of probation imposed by the trial court, requiring Patkar to appear before the trial court once in every three months, and allowed her to either appear physically or through videoconferencing or be represented through the lawyer during the appearances. The Narmada Bachao Andolan leader challenged the April 2 sessions court order upholding her conviction handed out by a magisterial court in the case. The sessions court, which upheld Patkar's conviction in the case, released her on 'probation of good conduct' on furnishing a probation bond of Rs 25,000 on April 8 and imposed a precondition on her of depositing Rs 1 lakh as fine. The magisterial court on July 1, 2024 sentenced Patkar to five months of simple imprisonment and slapped a Rs 10 lakh fine after finding her guilty under Section 500 (defamation) of the IPC. Saxena filed the case as president of the National Council of Civil Liberties against Patkar for her defamatory press release against Saxena issued on November 24, 2000. On May 24, 2024, the magisterial court held that that Patkar's statements were not only per se defamatory but also 'crafted to incite negative perceptions' about him. The accusation that the complainant was 'mortgaging' the people of Gujarat and their resources to foreign interests was a direct attack on his integrity and public service, it had said. On April 2, the sessions court had dismissed a challenge to the order and held Patkar was 'rightly convicted' and there was 'no substance' in the appeal against the verdict of her conviction in the defamation case.

Daylight bank heist in Jabalpur: Armed gang escapes with '10kg gold, Rs 6 lakh cash' after holding staff at gunpoint

They escaped with gold and cash after holding employees at gunpoint. The robbers, who arrived on motorcycles, stormed into the bank around 9:15 am—just as it opened—and fled within 20–25 minutes. According to sources, they decamped with nearly 10 kg of gold and around Rs 6 lakh in cash, though police have not confirmed the exact figures. CSP Sihora, Aditya Singhania, told TOI: 'A probe is being carried out, and CCTV cameras are being scanned. The exact amount of gold or cash that was robbed is not clear yet.' The gang allegedly forced bank staff to hand over valuables while brandishing firearms. No injuries were reported. Police have launched a manhunt and alerted neighbouring districts. Investigators are also examining whether the robbers had prior knowledge of the bank's operations and security arrangements. IndiGo fined Rs 1.75 lakh for giving ‘unhygienic, stained' seat to elderly passenger
A Delhi consumer forum recently held IndiGo Airlines guilty of deficiency in services for providing a 60-year-old woman an 'unhygienic and stained' seat. It directed the airlines to pay her Rs 1.75 lakh in compensation for the mental agony, pain and litigation expenses. '… airlines are required to maintain proper records of aircraft cleaning cycles and ensure that cabin crew are adequately trained in basic infection control measures. The DGCA regulations… mandate specific hygiene and sanitation responsibilities for the crew on board to ensure a clean and safe cabin environment for passengers,' the New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission held in its order dated July 18. 'However, the Opposite Party has failed to produce or maintain records of the cleaning cycles and has also not demonstrated compliance with the requirement to train the crew in basic infection control protocols,' the Commission added. Pinki, the complainant in this case, had boarded a flight from Azerbaijan to New Delhi on January 2 this year. As per her complaint, she found that the seat she was allotted was 'unhygienic, dirty, and stained'. On bringing this to the notice of the crew, they stated that the seats were not stained or dirty, alleged Pinki. She also stated that after they displayed helplessness in replacing her seat, she endured emotional distress throughout the duration of the flight which caused her mental anguish. To counter Pinki's claims, the airlines relied on mainly two arguments. First, it stated that the complainant had 'erroneously' filed the complaint against 'IndiGo Airlines', which was not a legal entity. Its claim was that the complaint should have been filed against InterGlobe Aviation Limited. Secondly, the airlines stated that the cabin crew immediately took cognizance of the complaints and accommodated her on a different seat. It added that it apologised for the inconvenience caused and exhausted all possible options to clean the seat before making the switch.
