Karun Nair Named Mysore Warriors Skipper, Set To Miss Duleep Trophy Due To Fracture

In a significant development ahead of the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 2025, experienced batter Karun Nair has been appointed captain of the Mysore Warriors. The right-hander, who has been a key figure for the franchise in past seasons, will continue to lead the side in the upcoming edition of Karnataka's premier T20 league. Injury Concerns However, Nair's participation will be limited at the start of the tournament as he is recovering from a finger fracture sustained during the recent Test series against England. The injury has not only sidelined him for the early stages of the Maharaja Trophy but has also ruled him out of the prestigious Duleep Trophy, where he was expected to represent Central Zone. The Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20, now in its fourth edition, is known for showcasing Karnataka's top cricketing talent alongside established international names. Nair's leadership will be pivotal for the Mysore Warriors, who will be looking to improve on their past performances and contend for the title. Despite his early absence, the team management has expressed confidence in his return during the later stages of the competition. Meanwhile, the Central Zone will have to do without Nair's experience in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, a multi-zone domestic tournament that has historically been a platform for national selection. His absence is seen as a blow for the side, which will rely on other senior batters to step up in his place. Opportunity For A Comeback Karun Nair, best known for his triple century against England in 2016, has had a stop-start run in recent years due to form and injuries. This latest setback adds to his challenges, but the 33-year-old remains focused on making a strong comeback once fully fit. The Maharaja Trophy begins from 11 August, with the Mysore Warriors hoping their skipper can join the action in time for the knockout stages. Venue Shift In the meantime, the Maharaja Trophy was shifted to Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Ground, Mysore. M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru wasn't given the green light to host the tournament after a stampede on June 5 during RCB's IPL trophy parade.

Ruturaj Gaikwad Gears Up For Upcoming Duleep Trophy Season With West Zone

India batter and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad on Saturday started practising for the upcoming 2025-26 Duleep Trophy, where he will be seen playing for the West Zone team. In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, an injury put an end to Gaikwad's season, as he made 122 runs in five matches, averaging 24.40, with two half-centuries. Not only was Gaikwad inconsistent, but he could win only one out of five matches during the season. Other than Gaikwad, there are some more Indian international stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, and Sarfaraz Khan who are part of the West Zone squad. Shardul, who has been named the captain, has never led in the first-class format, but captained Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December 2024, a one-day tournament. The competition, to be held from August 28 to September 15, will mark the start of the Indian domestic season 2025-26. Last year, the tournament shifted from its usual zonal format to having four different Indian squads, A, B, C and D, selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). International names like Axar Patel, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav were among the players who took part in the tournament. This year, the tournament will revert to its zonal format, with six teams playing: North, South, East, West, Central and North East, picked by the selectors of the Ranji teams in each zone, as per Wisden. West Zone Duleep Trophy squad: Batters: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Aarya Desai, Manan Hingrajia. Wicketkeepers: Harvik Desai, Saurabh Nawale. All-rounders: Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Jaymeet Patel, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja. Bowlers: Shardul Thakur (c), Tushar Deshpande, Arzan Nagwaswalla.

'Will remove you from the team...', Sanju Samson recalls Team India head coach's words over...

Sanju Samson. (PIC - X) Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson credited India head coach Gautam Gambhir for backing him to succeed in T20Is, and revealed him saying that he would only be dropped from the team if he registered 21 ducks. With Gambhir taking charge as India's head coach after the T20 World Cup win and Suryakumar Yadav appointed as the captain, Samson was given the opportunity to open the batting and has formed a formidable opening pair with left-handed batter Abhishek Sharma. 'So, suddenly, the change happened after the T20 World Cup. So Gautam bhai came in, and Surya came in as the captain. I was playing a Duleep Trophy game in Andhra. Surya was playing for the other team.' 'He told me, 'There is a good opportunity coming up for you. We have seven games lined up, and I am going to give you all seven games as an opener'. The words coming out from the captain's mouth itself actually felt, Oh wow, great,' said Samson in a video on former off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's YouTube channel on Saturday. Further throwing light on what Gambhir said to him, Samson said, 'I played two games in Sri Lanka but was unable to score runs. I was a bit down in the dressing room, and Gautam bhai came up to me and asked what had happened.' 'I said, 'After a long time, I got a chance, but I failed to capitalise'. He said, 'So what? I'll drop you if you register 21 ducks'. That's the word that he used. That kind of confidence from the captain and the coach has definitely raised my confidence. That really helped me to go out there and perform,' he added. So far, Samson has featured in 42 T20Is for India, scoring 861 runs at an average of 25.32 and a strike rate of 152.38. He has registered three centuries and two fifties in the format, with his maiden hundred coming against Bangladesh in Hyderabad last year, followed by two more centuries against South Africa. He will be in contention for the Indian team selection for the Asia Cup in the UAE from September 9-28. Samson admitted that being in and out of the team since his T20I debut in 2015 had left him frustrated, but things changed for the better for him after the arrival of Gambhir and Suryakumar. 'I know this thing, being on and off from the team and all those things were happening for a very long period of time, so honestly, I feel like it was not easy, and I think it was definitely not easy to have those kinds of feelings.' 'Like, I almost completed eight to nine years of my international career, but I only played 15 games or something. I always tried to keep myself in a very positive frame of mind. I always kept on telling myself, 'Okay, it will happen, but different people have different journeys. Yours is a different journey',' he concluded.
