NFL Owner Spends Shocking Amount on His Player's Trading Card
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels set records in his historic rookie season. With just weeks to go before his sophomore campaign, a new record has emerged. This time, two dimensionally.

The quarterback's rookie card was sold for a cool $500,000 at Topps Trade Night this past Saturday. The purchaser? None other than the Commanders' majority owner, Josh Harris.
Harris and Daniels were special guests at the event when Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin stood before a large crowd, demanding to see the rarest Daniels card among those in attendance. Josh Roth and Jacob Ramos of the Florida-based Rothcards showed Daniels' 2024 Panini Prizm Black Finite one-of-one card, which they had purchased for somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000.
That is where the negotiations began. With Rubin as the negotiator, Roth and Ramos ultimately agreed to sell the card to Harris for a significantly higher price of half a million dollars and an autographed Daniels jersey, which the 2024 NFL rookie of the year and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner signed immediately.

'It was such an experience to be on stage with just everyone. It really happened so fast. Moments like that are timeless,' Ramos said to TheAthletic.com.
The card will reportedly be on display at the Commanders' current home, Northwest Stadium, during the 2025 season. If Daniels delivers another season for Washington like he did last year, that card might prove to be just as much of a steal as Daniels has been for the team.

UPDATED: Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler making perfect game bid facing Rays
TAMPA, Fla. — Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked before Wednesday night's game against the Rays if the plan is to continue having rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler working five-innings starts. 'Just depends,' Boone said. 'If we can get him deep into a game, great. Those are decisions that kind of happen in the moment depending on the game and how it's unfolding and where you are.' A bid at making history was all it took. Making his seventh career start since a first MLB call-up on July 9, Schlittler was perfect through six innings in the Yankees' series finale against the Rays. The Yankees led the Rays 2-0 through five on the strength of two solo home runs, Trent Grisham's to lead off the game and Austin Wells' with one out in the fifth. Retiring 18 in a row, Schlittler's pitch count was at just 66 heading into the fifth inning, 51 of them strikes. Schittler threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 18 batters and fell behind 2-0 only in the fourth to Yandy Diaz, who strike out swinging on six pitches on a 98.6-mph fastball. He fanned six through six innings — one in each frame — and nobody came close to getting a hit. The Yankees took a quick 1-0 lead when Grisham homered off Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen before Schlitter began his mastery. Schlittler started his outing with Chandler Simpson striking out looking on three pitches, then he retired Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lower on flyballs in an 11-pitch inning. Heading into the game, Schilling was 1-2 with a 3.94 ERA. He worked five innings in four starts, a career-long 5.1 innings in his debut and 4.1 in another. Updating the New Orleans Saints WR corps after surprise Devaughn Vele trade
Here's that shakeup to the New Orleans Saints receiving corps we've been waiting for. The team hoped to land an impactful rookie in the 2025 NFL draft like Tetairoa McMillan (taken one spot ahead of them in Round 1) or Isaac TeSlaa (who the Detroit Lions traded ahead of them to pick), but they struck out. So Saints GM Mickey Loomis waited until the week before roster cuts to cut a deal with the Denver Broncos, acquiring 6-foot-5 contested-catch specialist Devaugn Vele. So how does Vele fit into the Saints wide receiver rotation? Here's how the group seems to stack up, assuming Vele is a lock to make the roster, based off what we've seen in preseason games and at training camp practices: Vele is the tallest guy in the room (nobody else measures in over 6-foot-2), and the heaviest. Peoples-Jones, at 204 pounds, is the only other wideout to weigh in at over 200. And he can play. Pro Football Reference has a great "success rate" stat, which you can read about here, but the gist of it is that it measures how close a player comes to converting a first down every time they touch the ball. Last season, 89 difference wide receivers were targeted 50 or more times. Vele, with 55 targets, had the fourth-best receiving success rate in that group (63.6), trailing only Tee Higgins (64.2), Amon-Ra St. Brown (70.2), and Chris Godwin (72.6). That's impressive. We're expecting the Saints to keep at least four receivers on the 53-man roster next week, but they could go higher. Kellen Moore's previous teams always rostered at least five (including last year on the Philadelphia Eagles), and they ran as high as seven deep on the Dallas Cowboys in 2022. It's a safe bet that two or three guys will return on the practice squad after waiver claims are processed. But at this point it's hard to see Wilson, Tipton, and Pettis each making the roster. If they were expected to, the Saints probably wouldn't have traded for Vele in the first place.
