Online shopping soars on deep summer deals, Adobe reports
The shopping period, often referred to as "Black Friday in Summer," featured major deal events, including Amazon Prime Day and other promotions across large retailers. According to Adobe Analytics, online sales grew by 30.3 percent, outpacing its original projection of 28.4 percent.
In comparison, online retail sales during the same stretch last year totalled $14.2 billion, an 11 percent annual increase.
"Prime Day has now clearly become a 'back-to-school' shopping moment," Adobe said, with consumers eager to snap up essentials early — and at steep discounts.
Multiple major retailers extended their sales events and widened discount categories, luring shoppers to spend on higher-ticket items they might otherwise avoid. Amazon, for instance, doubled its usual 48-hour Prime Day window to 96 hours, offering aggressive markdowns on everything from electronics to clothing.
Adobe said discounts across U.S. retailers ranged from 11 percent to 24 percent, slightly higher than previous forecasts. Apparel saw the steepest cuts at 24 percent, up from 20 percent last year, while electronics held steady at 23 percent.
Mobile devices accounted for 53.2 percent of online purchases, surpassing Adobe's forecast of 52.5 percent. This indicates growing consumer comfort with shopping on the go.
The surge comes amid economic uncertainty, with rising trade tensions and tariff deadlines under the Trump administration pushing both consumers and businesses to act early on significant purchases.

Carney announces new measures to support steel industry, prevent dumping, amid trade war
Prime Minister Mark Carney will make an announcement on the steel industry during a visit to Hamilton. Amid an ongoing trade war with the United States, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday new measures to bolster Canada's steel industry and prevent steel dumping in the Canadian market. The Canadian government plans to 'restrict and reduce foreign steel imports,' in part by reevaluating and changing tariff rates, Carney announced in Hamilton, Ont. Canada is also increasing tariffs on steel imports from non-U.S. countries containing steel melted and poured in China, Carney said. 'We have the potential to become our own best customer for steel, but we will lose that ability if we don't manage the profound transformation now underway in the industry, and to do that, we have to change the way we do things so we can better support our companies and our workers during this time of change,' Carney said. In February, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, including from Canada. Last month, he increased the rate to 50 per cent. This is a breaking news story. More to come.

Strong Q2 Earnings, Cooling PPI Lead Pre-Markets Higher
Wednesday, July 16, 2025 Pre-market futures are climbing into the green this morning, following a cooler-than-expected wholesale inflation report and better-than-expected financial Q2 earnings numbers out before the bell today. After starting off roughly -0.1% across the board, we're currently up +160 points on the Dow, +13 points on the S&P 500 and +14 on the Nasdaq. The small-cap Russell 2000, which yesterday shed -2% in regular trading, is +15 points presently. PPI Data Lower than Expected: A Pull-Forward in Effect? This morning, the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) was released, for the month of June. Following yesterday's Consumer Price Index (CPI) — the retail print on monthly inflation — today's PPI reflects the wholesale side. Headline PPI for June, month over month, reached 0.0% — lower than the +0.2% expected and 30 basis points (bps) below the upwardly revised +0.3% from the prior month. Subtracting volatile food and energy costs on the producers' side, core PPI was also 0.0%, as was the latest ex-food, energy and trade read: 0.0%. These are down from the upward revisions on both metrics of +0.4% and +0.1%, respectively. These are also the coolest inflation prints on PPI since April of this year — the month President Trump brought tariffs to bear. PPI year over year on headline came in at +2.3%, 30 bps below expectations and the lowest since +2.1% reported in September of last year. Core PPI year over year reached +2.6%, a notch below estimates and -40 bps from the May print of +3.0%. Year over year, ex-food, energy and trade, we see +2.5% — 20 bps under estimates and the slimmest wholesale inflation print since November of 2023. Coming as these numbers are within the static of a U.S. tariff policy with constantly moving goalposts, we can attribute some of this surprise to a likely pull-forward from the months prior. Lower wholesale inflation — especially when we saw warmer-than-expected retail inflation in the CPI numbers yesterday — quite likely means supplies had been sufficient in previous months to not be beholden to higher sticker prices in the month of June. To the extent this data funnels into Fed-preferred metrics on overall inflation, we still see these PPI numbers above optimal inflation levels of +2.0%. In fact, since the Great Reopening as the Covid pandemic dimmed four years ago, we've never gotten back down to +2.0% inflation. Then again, as we mentioned in this space yesterday, +2.0% inflation is a notion very likely on borrowed time; once Fed Chair Jerome Powell is replaced, we expect the overall narrative to change. Q2 Earnings Roundup: Financials and More After Tuesday kicked off Q2 earnings season for some of the biggest banks on Wall Street, today we see a continuation: Bank of America BAC posted a 3-cent beat to 89 cents per share (6 cents higher than the year-ago quarter) for a +3.5% earnings surprise. Revenues, however, missed estimates slightly, -0.5%. Better-than-expected loan revenue has helped prop the stock in early trading. For more on BAC's earnings, click here. Perhaps the best Q2 earnings report so far belongs to Goldman Sachs GS, which posted a +15.7% earnings surprise this morning: $10.91 per share versus $9.43 expected (which itself was +9.4% higher than the year-ago quarter) on $14.58 billion in quarterly revenues, which easily surpassed the $13.5 billion estimate by +8%. This is a good sign for investment banking overall. But as shares have already climbed +22.7% year to date, this morning's gains are so far slim. For more on GS' earnings, click here. Morgan Stanley MS also represented strongly for investment banking this morning, with earnings of $2.13 per share on $16.79 billion in revenues for the quarter outpacing the Zacks consensus by +10.36% and +5.5%, respectively. Yet shares are selling a bit ahead of the opening bell, -1.8%, after having doubled the finance sector year to date. For more on MS' earnings, click here. Johnson & Johnson JNJ shares are up +2% on its impressive Q2 earnings beat this morning, with earnings of $2.77 per share outperforming projections for $2.66 (though still down from $2.82 per share reported in the year-ago quarter). Revenues of $23.7 billion are up nicely from the $22.80 billion expected. CEO Joaquin Doato says he sees a stronger 2H2025 ahead for the pharma/household goods giant. Is NVIDIA a Buy Amid Expectations of China Sales Resumption?
NVIDIA Corp. NVDA — the undisputed global leader of the generative artificial intelligence (AI)-powered graphical processing units (GPUs) — saw a 4% jump in its stock price on July 15, after the company said in a statement that it is hopeful about resuming sales of H20 AI chips to China. At present, NVDA is the first and the sole publicly traded company with a market capitalization of more than $4 trillion. The Trump administration restricted the shipment of H20 chips to China in April. However, the situation has changed after rigorous trade and tariff-related negotiations between the United States and China following the implementation of President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs. In a recent statement, the company said, 'the U.S. government has assured NVIDIA that licenses will be granted, and it hopes to start deliveries soon.' Since May, the market has been ripe with speculation that NVIDIA is developing a less advanced variant of H20 chips — called RTX PRO. CEO Jensen Huang said that the new chip is a 'fully compliant' GPU, ideal for smart factories and logistics. It is not clear whether Huang was talking about H20 or RTX PRO for a U.S. license to export in China. Implications NVIDIA lost $2.5 billion revenues in China in first-quarter fiscal 2026 and a $4.5 billion inventory write off. Management warned that it will lose $8 billion in revenues from China from second-quarter fiscal 2026. NVIDIA is no longer counting any sales from China. Several investment banks have estimated that the resumption of sales in China could bring back around $10 to $20 billion in revenues in the rest of fiscal 2026. Financial researchers estimate that these additional revenues could translate into 25 cents to 50 cents in EPS upside in fiscal 2026. Consequently, it should act as a significant catalyst to NVDA stock's upside potential. The stock price recorded its recent low in early April. From there, it surged nearly 97%, with a year-over-year gain of more than 26%. Innovation, Evolution and Execution NVIDIA reaffirmed its commitment to continued innovation, evolution and execution. After the successful execution of Hopper GPUs, NVDA's Blackwell GPUs have already sold record-high units to cloud providers. NVIDIA is expected to unveil Blackwell Ultra in the second half of 2025 and begin shipping Vera Rubin in 2026. In addition, the company has decided to announce its roadmap for Rubin Next, to be introduced in 2027, and Feynman AI chips in 2028. The company is supported by an extremely bullish demand scenario. Four major clients of the company, namely, Microsoft Corp. MSFT, Alphabet Inc. GOOGL, Meta Platforms Inc. META and Inc. AMZN have decided to invest a massive $325 billion in 2025 as capital expenditure for AI-infrastructure development. This marks a significant 46% year-over-year increase in capital spending on the AI ecosystem. Research firm Oppenheimer estimated that the total addressable global sovereign AI market could be a massive $1.5 trillion. Leveraging Reasoning AI Models The major innovation for NVDA's new chipsets is a qualitative shift from pure-play generative AI models to reasoning AI models. NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang said that contrary to the market's belief that DeepSeek is a major threat to NVDA's high-cost chips, it has actually opened a huge growth opportunity for his company. According to Huang, 'DeepSeek's R1 AI model is the first open-sourced reasoning model. This reasoning AI consumes 100 times more compute than a non-reasoning AI.' OpenAI's o1 and Alphabet's Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking are also reasoning models. Huang said that AI chips with faster speed will be the best option for companies that opt for reasoning AI-based infrastructure to save costs and maximize returns. In this regard, NVDA's upcoming Blackwell Ultra chips are expected to provide data centers 50 times more revenues than its Hopper systems, buoyed by their superfast AI servicing capabilities to multiple users. Visionary Diversification Apart from the robust business of data centers and gaming, the automobile industry, especially the self-driving and new energy vehicles, is turning out to be the next catalyst. In first-quarter fiscal 2026, automotive revenues jumped 72% year over year to $567 million. NVDA is expecting automotive segment revenue to cross $5 billion in fiscal 2026. Huang is highly optimistic as this business could become a multitrillion-dollar opportunity in the future. NVIDIA is increasingly focusing on powering advanced driver-assistance systems, autonomous vehicles, and robotics. The company has started the production of its 'full-stack' solutions for Mercedes-Benz, which combines its DRIVE AGX Orin AI chips with DriveOS software for next-generation vehicles. In addition to Mercedes-Benz, other auto giants like Volvo and China's BYD are using NVDA's chips. Moreover, NVDA's chips are also used in some of Tesla Inc. 's supercomputers. NVIDIA is also using its AI-enabled factory robots to upgrade and streamline the assembly line for auto makers like General Motors Co. and Hyundai. Strong Upside Potential for NVDA Stock NVIDIA has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 51.4% and 41.8%, respectively, for the current year (ending January 2026). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for current-year earnings has remained flat over the past 60 days. It has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 25.2% and 31.9%, respectively, for the next year (ending January 2027). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for next-year earnings has improved 0.2% over the past 30 days. NVDA has a long-term (3-5 years) EPS growth rate of 28.2%, significantly above the S&P 500 Index's 12.6% growth rate. NVIDIA has a return on equity (ROE) of 105.1% compared with the S&P 500's ROE of 17% and the industry's ROE of a mere 5%. NVDA has a forward P/E (price/earnings) of 38.7% compared with the industry's P/E of 39.1% and the S&P 500's P/E of 19.6%. Investment Thesis for NVDA Shares NVIDIA currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here. However, the return of sales from China will have a significant positive impact on both the top and bottom lines of the company. As a result, the average target price of brokerage firms is expected to witness solid near-term upside. NVIDIA represents a rare opportunity to invest in a company with proven execution and substantial unrealized potential in the AI revolution. At this stage, it will be prudent to buy NVDA on every dip. Hold this stock for the long term as the company's strong execution of the last several quarters and robust future projections will generate more value.
