Party will decide about seat sharing in alliance: CPM

Time of India6 hours ago

Trichy: CPM state secretary P Shanmugam has stated the party will decide internally on the number of seats it will demand from the DMK for the upcoming elections.
"We are not under pressure from the DMK.
We will decide the number of seats we want. Other parties in the alliance should not dictate our demands," Shanmugam, who was attending a two-day state body meeting, told reporters in Trichy on Thursday.
Shanmugam downplayed any internal discord within the DMK-led INDI alliance. He added, "Our main focus in the elections is to defeat the BJP-AIADMK alliance, though no one wants to contest fewer seats."
Shanmugam also acknowledged the rise in right-wing sentiments in the state, saying, "There is no denying the growth of the right wing.
We are working to unite secular forces on one platform."
During the meeting, several resolutions were passed. Shanmugam condemned the Union government's decision to raise train ticket prices and criticized its allocation of funds, noting that more money was directed toward the development of Sanskrit than to other classical languages like Tamil.
The CPM also criticized the state government's move to introduce dialysis services in upgraded Primary Health Centres (PHCs) under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The party extended its support to the national strike called by central labour unions on July 9 to protest the Centre's "anti-worker policies."

Centre asks MCD to conduct vendors' survey as per 2014 Act

New Delhi: Central govt on Thursday directed Municipal Corporation of Delhi to ensure that a vendors' survey is conducted in the city as per Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014. Referring to a letter written by National Hawker Federation, the under secretary of the Union housing and urban affairs ministry wrote to the MCD commissioner, requesting an examination of the content of the representation made by the vendors' association. The letter urged action as deemed appropriate in accordance with the provisions of the 2014 Act. "The representation of NHF highlights serious concerns regarding the ongoing treatment and regulation of street vendors in Delhi. Key issues include the lack of transparency and legal compliance in the current vendor survey, exclusion of town vending committees (TVCs) from the process, ongoing harassment and evictions despite valid identification, and the absence of proper social protection measures," stated the letter written by under secretary Asgar Ali. In the representation, NHA secretary Anil Bakshi sought intervention to ensure TVC-led implementation, policy review and coordination with relevant stakeholders to safeguard the rights and livelihoods of street vendors in the national capital by civic bodies, including MCD. Referring to the submission, Bakshi said the Act came out in 2014, but the civic bodies had failed to complete the process for counting vendors, conducting surveys, assigning spaces to them, etc. "As per norms, all existing street vendors identified in the survey will be accommodated in the vending zones subject to a norm of 2.5% of the population of a ward, town and area. But the civic bodies are busy removing them and defining them as encroachers. This is nullifying vendors' chances to get surveyed," he claimed. Not just that, during the ongoing vendors' survey, town vending committee members are not at all engaged and the exercise is being carried out by the civic bodies with private concessionaires, Bakshi pointed out. "This is unfair. Further, those who are counted are not given any receipt or certificate defining their location and business," he added. An MCD official said that the municipal corporation received the letter on Thursday and was looking into the points highlighted in it.

Is a fourth stimulus check on the way? What you need to know about the third payment

Stimulus check speculation has been rife for a couple of weeks with many expecting a fourth payment to be rolled out soon by Trump. The first stimulus payment was issued in March and April 2020, the second payment was issued by January 15, 2021, and the third payment was issued between March and December 2021. The deadline to file for all these payments has now passed. Any unclaimed check amounts would have now directly become the property of the US Treasury. No extensions or appeals were granted in the matter. Several Americans are worried about a fourth stimulus check(Unsplash/representative ) The first stimulus payment was worth $1,200 for individuals, $2,400 for married couples, and an additional $500 per qualifying child below the age of 17. The second check was worth $600 per individual, $1,200 for married couples, and $600 per qualifying child under the age of 17. The third stimulus payment, which was provided to claim Recovery Rebate Credit for 2021, was worth $1,400 per eligible individual. The same amount was applicable per dependent for married couples filing jointly. Once your tax returns have been accepted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), you will receive a 'Refund Sent' alert upon checking your application status online. Following the acceptance of your claim, it wouldn't ideally take long for the payment to be processed. Those who filed their taxes electronically can expect a refund via direct deposit within 21 days. Paper checks can take from six to eight weeks. How to check your refund status? The IRS has developed an online mechanism called 'Where's my Refund?' that allows beneficiaries to self-check the status of their application. By providing your Social Security number, filing status, and refund amount, you can check the status of your refund 24 hours after filing for the same. Here are the different updates you might receive on the platform and what they mean: • Return received (processing) • Refund approved (preparing to issue a refund by the date shown) • Refund sent (send to your bank or in the mail) Is a fourth payment on the way? In February of this year, Trump announced the possibility of rolling out $5,000 stimulus checks to all eligible taxpayers if the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE) were to be able to reach their target of cutting down by 20% on all government expenditure by eliminating 'wasteful spending'. Since then, there has been no official update regarding a possible fourth stimulus payment. The chances of this actualizing into reality remain slim given Musk's recent exit from the DoGE and their reported inability to hit the set target. Those whose taxes were electronically filed and accepted by April 15 can expect to receive their third stimulus payment by May 6 via direct deposit or by June 16th if opted for physical mail.
