Api-Api PBS information chief Yee Tsai Yiew has urged the federal government to urgently address the ageing infrastructure of government clinics in the state capital. Yiew said many clinics are operating beyond capacity with outdated facilities, insufficient equipment, and deteriorating surroundings, requiring immediate intervention. She highlighted the critical shortage of space, damaged chairs, and outdated medical equipment such as ultrasound machines during her visit to the Kota Kinabalu Women and Children's Clinic in Kampung Air. Yiew, who is also Special Officer to the Chief Minister, stressed that healthcare is a federal responsibility and called for proper funding to ensure all citizens receive quality healthcare. As a short-term measure, she donated 24 new chairs to the clinic while reiterating the need for systemic, long-term investment in Sabah's healthcare infrastructure. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LDP: Give same urgency to healthcare bullying as Zara

Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party Vice President David Ong has urged the government to treat workplace bullying in healthcare with the same urgency as the fight for justice for 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. 'We must not let another tragic case be pushed aside,' Ong said, citing a Tawau Hospital doctor who was bullied so severely by senior colleagues that she fell into deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Advertisement 'Her story is a painful reminder that bullying is not just happening in school, it is destroying lives in our hospitals.' Between 2022 and March 2024, 355 bullying complaints were made through the Health Ministry's MyHelp channel. 'Only 10 were investigated, that's 2.8pc while only four were proven just 1.1pc. 'Even in physical assaults, punishment was often just a warning letter. This is not inefficiency, it looks like deliberate neglect," he stressed. He accused the ministry of protecting bullies instead of victims by transferring them or sending them abroad for training while silencing victims. 'Selective justice is corrupted justice. Every one of the 355 cases must be answered for. Every victim deserves justice. Every bully must face the consequences. 'We will not stop until workplace bullying in healthcare is wiped out and those responsible are held accountable whether it's for Zara, for the Tawau doctor, or for any victim of institutional abuse in Malaysia," he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? TAWAU: Students of Politeknik Tawau Sabah (PTS) have been urged to come forward if they become victims of bullying or face emotional distress caused by other students. PTS Deputy Director Helen Lau @ Abd Kadir said the institution places strong emphasis on students' emotional well-being in addition to physical health. Advertisement 'PTS remains committed to ensuring the well-being of both students and staff, in terms of both emotional and physical health,' she said. She was speaking at the 2025 Health Screening Day organised by the PTS Student Affairs Unit in collaboration with the Tawau Dental Clinic, Apas-Balung Health Clinic and the Tawau Hospital Blood Donation Unit, on Saturday. The programme, which benefited more than 400 members of PTS, was officiated by Tawau Area Deputy Health Officer Dr Srinivasan Subramaniam. Helen expressed hope the initiative would continue in future, further strengthening cooperation between PTS and the agencies involved. She said the event also formed part of the Health Promotions In Learning Institutions (HePiLI) at PTS and included health checks for 135 new students enrolled in the July 2025/2026 Session I intake. PTS has recorded 100 per cent intake achievement for five consecutive semesters in its two programmes, including Diploma in Tourism Management and Diploma in Tourism Recreation, reinforcing its presence in Sabah's East Coast and maintaining strong demand from both local and out-of-state students. Meanwhile, Dr Srinivasan reminded PTS students to pay attention to both mental and physical health to remain active in carrying out daily tasks. He welcomed the programme as part of the Malaysia Sihat Sejahtera Month and Health Promotions in Learning Institutions (BMSS-HePiLI), an initiative under the Malaysia Sihat National Agenda (ANMS). He also encouraged PTS students to take advantage of the free general health screenings and dental check-ups offered. The one-day programme featured dental treatment, general health checks and a blood donation drive. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
