Polytechnic Tawau urges students not to remain silent if bullied

TAWAU: Students of Politeknik Tawau Sabah (PTS) have been urged to come forward if they become victims of bullying or face emotional distress caused by other students. PTS Deputy Director Helen Lau @ Abd Kadir said the institution places strong emphasis on students' emotional well-being in addition to physical health.
Advertisement 'PTS remains committed to ensuring the well-being of both students and staff, in terms of both emotional and physical health,' she said. She was speaking at the 2025 Health Screening Day organised by the PTS Student Affairs Unit in collaboration with the Tawau Dental Clinic, Apas-Balung Health Clinic and the Tawau Hospital Blood Donation Unit, on Saturday. The programme, which benefited more than 400 members of PTS, was officiated by Tawau Area Deputy Health Officer Dr Srinivasan Subramaniam. Helen expressed hope the initiative would continue in future, further strengthening cooperation between PTS and the agencies involved. She said the event also formed part of the Health Promotions In Learning Institutions (HePiLI) at PTS and included health checks for 135 new students enrolled in the July 2025/2026 Session I intake. PTS has recorded 100 per cent intake achievement for five consecutive semesters in its two programmes, including Diploma in Tourism Management and Diploma in Tourism Recreation, reinforcing its presence in Sabah's East Coast and maintaining strong demand from both local and out-of-state students. Meanwhile, Dr Srinivasan reminded PTS students to pay attention to both mental and physical health to remain active in carrying out daily tasks. He welcomed the programme as part of the Malaysia Sihat Sejahtera Month and Health Promotions in Learning Institutions (BMSS-HePiLI), an initiative under the Malaysia Sihat National Agenda (ANMS). He also encouraged PTS students to take advantage of the free general health screenings and dental check-ups offered. Mother, son die after suspected food poisoning at wedding

TAWAU: A woman and her nine-year-old son died, believed to be from suspected food poisoning, after attending a wedding reception at a residential area in Batu 4, Jalan Apas here last Saturday. The victims, Nazuah Pili, 36, and Mohd Amran Masran, fell unconscious after suffering prolonged diarrhoea and vomiting upon returning home at around 11am. Tawau acting district police chief Superintendent Champin Piuh said the case was reported by a 24-year-old niece of the victim, who requested that an investigation into the deaths be opened. Initial questioning of the complainant and the victim's husband revealed the mother and son had brought back a food package from the reception, which the husband also consumed. 6,144 teen pregnancies recorded in over 2 years, Dewan hears

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: A total of 6,144 teenage pregnancies were recorded between 2023 and March this year, says deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad. Citing health ministry statistics on cases registered at government health facilities, she said 2,737 cases were reported in 2023, 2,752 in 2024, and 655 in the first quarter of 2025. Noraini said that a 2015 study published in the Medical Journal of Malaysia identified limited access to comprehensive reproductive health education as a major factor, which left many teenagers unaware of how to protect themselves from unplanned pregnancies. 'This finding is also supported by the 2019 Study on Adolescent Risk and Protective Factors for Reproductive and Social Health by the National Population and Family Development Board,' Bernama reported her as saying in the Dewan Rakyat during question time today. She was responding to Doris Sophia Brodi (GPS-Sri Aman), who had asked about the number of cases, growth rates and main causes of teenage pregnancies in each state from 2023 to the first quarter of 2025. Noraini said a 2020 study published in the Malaysian Journal of Psychology also cited other contributing factors such as peer pressure and media influence, particularly exposure to sexually explicit content. 'From a socioeconomic perspective, poverty, school dropouts and the lack of job opportunities have also been identified as factors that heighten teenagers' vulnerability to this risk,' she said. Responding to a supplementary question from Doris on a national action plan to address the issue, Noraini said the ministry's initiatives include developing the Reproductive and Social Health Education module and an action plan to tackle underage marriages. LDP: Give same urgency to healthcare bullying as Zara

'We must not let another tragic case be pushed aside,' Ong said, citing a Tawau Hospital doctor who was bullied so severely by senior colleagues that she fell into deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Advertisement 'Her story is a painful reminder that bullying is not just happening in school, it is destroying lives in our hospitals.' Between 2022 and March 2024, 355 bullying complaints were made through the Health Ministry's MyHelp channel. 'Only 10 were investigated, that's 2.8pc while only four were proven just 1.1pc. 'Even in physical assaults, punishment was often just a warning letter. This is not inefficiency, it looks like deliberate neglect," he stressed. He accused the ministry of protecting bullies instead of victims by transferring them or sending them abroad for training while silencing victims. 'Selective justice is corrupted justice. Every one of the 355 cases must be answered for. Every victim deserves justice. Every bully must face the consequences.
