Lucknow: The 24-hour session of the UP legislative Assembly on 'Viksit Bharat Viksit Uttar Pradesh' had many of its women members, like RLD's Mithilesh Pal, BJP's Ketaki Singh and Saroj Sonker and Samajwadi Party's Indrani Verma waiting patiently for their turn to speak on the government's vision document.
Some till as late as 1.00 am and others till 3.30 am on Thursday.
There were also some who had spoken but still sat through the session whole night to listen to others, including Congress' Aradhna Misra 'Mona', SP's Puja Pal and BJP's Minakshi Singh and Krishna Paswan.
For the BJP members, it clearly sent a message that it was the subject of discussion which was important and not the late-hour and early-morning timing for the women legislators, while for members from Opposition, it was an opportunity to expose government's failure and for a few to come out with flying colours before their party bosses and last but not the least to be part of the history that was in the making.
It was the second such session in recent history to have been continued throughout the night, with a total of 189 speakers across party lines. A few legislators were pleading with the chair to include their names in the list of the speakers.
However, there were others who wanted to jump the long queue of speakers.
Earlier in October, 2019, the UP Assembly had held a 36-hour special session on sustainable development goals set up by the United Nations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Interestingly, leader of the House and Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
also made a few visits during the 24-hour discussion even as late as 9.30pm on Wednesday.

The CM remained in the House until 11.11pm and patiently heard members across the party line before returning the next morning.
Speaker Satish Mahana also remained in the chair till around 10.20pm and so was present Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna. Khanna remained in the House until around 11.45pm. BJP member Anupama Jaiswal then replaced Mahana in the chair before unattached MLA Manoj Pandey replaced her at 11.37pm.
SP MLA Indrani Varma from Bhinga in Shravasti waited for her turn to speak until 1 am and left only after making her statement. So did Saiyyada Khatoon from Domariyaganj who spoke before Indrani at 11.04pm. BJP's Minakshi Singh spoke at 10.01 pm but remained in the House until wee hours giving patient hearing to other members. The women members' activeness could be gauged from the fact that Congress MLA Mona Misra remained in the House whole night just like BJP MLA Ketki Singh.
Malihabad MLA Jai Devi was also seen seated in the House throughout the night. Rae Bareli MLA Aditi Singh also was in the House until 1.45am.
A heated exchange of words was also witnessed between Maant MLA Rajesh Chaudhary and Varanasi Cantt MLA Saurabh Srivastava, who was acting as chief whip in the absence of Ram Naresh Agnihotri. Rajesh could not speak during the time allocated for members from his Braj region which was between 9pm and 12 midnight. Since those who had to speak between 6pm and 9pm continued until 11pm and those who had to speak after that could not speak, Rajesh objected to it.
It was only after the spat that seven MLAs from Braj and West UP were accommodated in the 12 midnight to 3 am slot.

‘Committed to India's development': Modi hails RSS in Independence Day speech

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address on Friday, praised the contribution of the RSS, widely seen as the ideological mentor of the ruling BJP. The Prime Minister's praise for the RSS comes at a time when there is speculation that the RSS and the BJP are at odds over several issues. It has also come amid speculations that the RSS is seeking more changes within the BJP's organisational structure and in government functioning. PM Modi stated, "An organisation was born 100 years ago — Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh! With the goal of welfare of Maa Bharati for 100 years, the RSS volunteers dedicated their lives to the welfare of the motherland, with regard to this resolution of nation building from the creation of individual". He added that he remembers all the volunteers who have contributed to the service of the nation over the past 100 years. Modi praised the RSS for its role in nation-building and societal development over the last century, describing it as the world's largest NGO committed to India's development and public service. Meanwhile, Congress party has contradicted the Prime Minister's remarks on the RSS.

Husband gets justice: Akhilesh sacks MLA for praising Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Pooja Pal was expelled from the party on Thursday, hours after she thanked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for 'delivering justice' in her husband's mur-der case and praised him for bringing in policies with zero tolerance against criminals. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said Ms Pooja, whose husband Raju Pal was shot dead by gangster Atiq Ah-med in 2005, was 'immediately expelled' from the party due to her engagement in 'anti-party activ-ities and serious indiscipline which continued despite prior warnings and caused significant harm to the party'. The expulsion created a political uproar with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state ac-cusing the opposition of being 'anti-Dalit'. In his statement in Hindi, Yadav said: 'She (Ms Pooja) is no longer permitted to participate in any par-ty programs and will not be invited to them in the future.' The development came hours after Ms Pooja thanked the Chief Minister for 'listening to her when no one else did' over her husband's murder. Former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal was shot dead on January 25, 2005, days after he married Ms Pooja. The murder, police said, was a result of political rivalry with gangster Atiq Ahmed's brother Ashraf, whom Raju had defeated in the 2004 bypoll to the Prayagraj West seat. In February 2023, Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder case, was shot dead in Prayagraj's Sulem Saray area. Days later, Atiq and Ashraf - both of whom were arrested - were shot dead by three men when they were being taken for a medical check-up in Prayagraj. Atiq was shot in the head from behind, nearly at point-blank range. Ashraf, too, was shot dead, as the murder was captured on camera. This came days after Atiq's son Asad was killed in an alleged encounter in Jhansi. All three men were later ar-rested.

Uttarakhand Cabinet approves changes to anti-conversion law

Dehradun: The state cabinet's approval for bringing another legislation to amend the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act makes this law, which is aimed at preventing religious conversions through coercion, fraud, or undue influence, even more stringent. This is the second legislation to amend the act which has been in force in Uttarakhand since 2018. The first amendment was made in 2022 when Pushkar Singh Dhami assumed office as chief minister for a second consecutive term. The second amendment legislation approved by the state cabinet on Wednesday provides for a max-imum punishment of life imprisonment and fine of up to Rs 10 lakh for forced conversion. The maximum prison term for the offence in Uttarakhand at present is 10 years and the highest fine is Rs 50,000. The new bill proposes to raise the jail term for such offences up to 14 or 20 years and can be extend-ed to even life imprisonment depending upon the gravity of a case. The state government is preparing to bring the legislation during the monsoon session of the state assembly scheduled to commence on August 19, sources said. 'Yet another amendment legislation to make the law even more strict has been occasioned by recent cases of conversions in the state aimed at demographic change,' BJP leader and former chairman of Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple committee Ajendra Ajay said. Terming the Cabinet's decision as historic, he said, 'An amended act with stricter provisions will work as a strong deterrent for potential offenders and help preserve the original identity of a border state like Uttarakhand which is also known as Devbhoomi.' Ajendra, who had actively raised the issue of land jihad in the state, said a new stricter law against conversion is the need of the hour. It will help counter a 'nationwide campaign' being run regarding conversion at present, he said.
