Jamie Carragher suspicions proven spot on as Liverpool 'reach transfer agreement'
Darwin Nunez's impending exit from Liverpool was already predicted by Jamie Carragher last season. The striker became the Reds' third-most expensive player ever in 2022 when he joined for a reported fee of £64m plus add-ons.
However, three years on, the Uruguayan has failed to deliver on a consistent basis, leaving Arne Slot willing to listen to offers for his services. He scored just five Premier League goals last season and seven in all competitions on his way to earning his first league title in Europe.
Having already sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich this summer, the Premier League champions appear close to shipping Nunez out. According to The Athletic, Al-Hilal have reached an agreement with Liverpool to sign the striker.
The Saudi Pro League side - who are managed by ex-Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi - are said to have agreed a fee of £46million (€53m) plus add-ons for Nunez, who has indicated willingness to discuss personal terms.
The fee would free up funds to take a second run at Alexander Isak, after their initial bid of £110m was rejected by Newcastle. Many saw last season as Nunez's last chance to establish himself as the club's leading striker, but with just four goals to his name by December, Carragher predicted he wouldn't last much longer on Merseyside.
During an episode of The Overlap, the Liverpool legend told Ian Wright that Nunez's unpredictability is not something top players possess and admitted he didn't think he'd last one more season at the club.
He said: "We said we don't know what he is going to do, so how will the defenders? Nobody ever says that about a good player, do they? I'm not sure he will be here next season, I think Liverpool will move him on."
The Arsenal great added: "I never know what is going to happen with Nunez when he goes through. I would've thought for that price we would have seen a lot more from him by now. It is not going to be any different to what he is now."
Nunez's shining moment last season came when he netted two late goals to beat Brentford in what was a key victory in Liverpool's charge for the league title. However, he also faced public criticism from Slot who questioned the striker's attitude after missing a sitter in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.
The Dutchman admitted that he wasn't incensed with Nunez missing a chance but rather his lack of work ethic following the opportunity, a criticism he levied at his player twice. "First of all, I helped him by saying you can miss a chance," Slot said. "I wasn't only hard on him. But for the second time in a row I wasn't happy with his work effort, against Wolves and against Villa.
"I always try to be honest with my players and be honest as I can to you guys as well where I always try to protect my players so I don't say he never worked hard. I know him differently. I know him at Villa at home where he made a 100 metre sprint and scored a goal.
"I know him when he came on at City at home and was pressing really aggressively and wins the ball back and we score. But I can't accept if a player doesn't give everything. That is clear. I can accept it once but twice was a bit too much. That's why I addressed it."
Should Nunez clinch his move to Saudi Arabia, his absence leaves Slot with only Hugo Ekitike as the club's only natural striker, while the likes of Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa can fill in at the number nine spot.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah names surprising favourites to win Premier League
Mohamed Salah has surprisingly suggested that Liverpool are not the favourites to win the Premier League this season. Salah scored a remarkable 29 goals in the league last campaign to help fire the Reds to their 20th league title in Arne Slot's first season in charge. Over the summer, Liverpool have not rested on their laurels, either, spending nearly £300million on summer signings, including breaking the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz. Despite that, the Reds will not be short of rivals again this season, with Manchester City and Arsenal expected to prove stern challenges for the title. And Salah reckons that Arsenal should be considered favourites to finally get over the line this season, having finished second in the last three seasons. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. 'I think you (Arsenal) have a great team this season as you did last season,' Salah replied when asked about the Gunners' title hopes at Tuesday's PFA Awards. 'So, you have really good chance. I think you are the favourite now because you players who have been together for five years. 'I can't say I'll wish you luck – hopefully we do it again.' Asked about his performances last season, which saw him scoop the PFA's men's player of the year award, Salah added: 'I'm just getting old and I think I can handle the pressure more now. 'I think last season was incredible – the best of my career and I'm glad it went so well. Winning the Premier League with Liverpool and having that impact in the team was just incredible.' Arsenal, meanwhile, got their campaign underway with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. And despite not looking at their best to kickstart the season, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville still believes that Mikel Arteta's side should narrowly be considered favourites for the title this year. More Trending 'I couldn't separate Arsenal, Liverpool and City and I think they are all in with an equal chance so I've got no certainty that Arsenal are going to win it,' Neville said. 'But they've been consistent over the last three years and I do feel they will get there at some point. They are reliable and solid and they're consistent, which I think is important. 'I think they've got the right materials, they are just going to have to sort that forward bit of the pitch out and I think Gyokeres will.' Liverpool face a visit to St James' Park to take on Newcastle United next weekend, while Arsenal host Leeds United at the Emirates. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Rangers icon Allan McGregor explains why VAR was CORRECT to disallow Djeidi Gassama goal against Club Brugge
RANGERS legend Allan McGregor reckons the officials got it RIGHT to disallow Djeidi Gassama's strike against Club Brugge. The winger thought he'd brought the Gers to within a goal of the Belgians only for VAR to intervene. 4 Djeidi Gassama thought he'd scored to make it 3-2 Credit: Getty 4 But VAR got involved Credit: PRIME VIDEO 4 Club Brugge keeper Simon Mignolet seemed to get his hands to the ball Credit: PRIME VIDEO 4 Allan McGregor was part of the punditry team Credit: Willie Vass It was a night to forget at Ibrox as Rangers slumped to a 3-1 defeat in their Champions League play-off first leg. Few inside the stadium could quite believe what was happening as the Gers found themselves three goals down inside the opening 20 minutes amid an almighty defensive shambles. Many fans had seen enough and headed for the exit door. Danilo got a goal back early in the second half as the Gers attempted to mount a fightback. They thought they'd got it back to 3-2 as the game approached its final stages with regular Euro hero Djeidi Gassama popping up with the goal. However, it wasn't to be. Gassama weaved his way into the box, saw a shot deflected before prodding the ball home from close range. The referee gave the goal but the Brugge players weren't happy. VAR got involved and the whistler was off to the monitor. He was then shown that Brugge keeper Simon Mignolet appeared to have his hands on the ball first - BEFORE Gassama tapped it into the net. Inside Rangers-themed barbers After a quick look, the goal was chalked off leaving Ibrox deflated. It was a controversial moment but one that ex-Gers No1 Allan McGregor believes the officials called correctly. The laws of the game state a ball cannot be removed from a goalkeeper's possession when they are in control of it - and McGregor reckons Mignolet did indeed get his hands to the ball first before Gassama prodded home. McGregor told Prime Video: "Unfortunately it probably is a free-kick, yeah. "I never got a right good view of it but if the ball is in his hands first, which I think slightly it is, then he's deemed to be in control of it. "Unfortunately it is a free-kick. "By the way, he's done brilliantly to get it into that position." McGregor was joined on the Prime panel by former Gers teammate Scott Arfield. The current Falkirk ace agreed with the former keeper's assessment. Arfield added: "I do agree because obviously Allan doesn't want to say that but he's also a member of the goalies' union. "You have to say he's got the two hands on the ball, it is a bit soft, but he is in control. "It's one of them, if it's for you you're delighted."
