WNBA player fined after lip-syncing Sabrina Carpenter's 'Manchild' to roast referees
Women's basketball has its own share of controversies and issues outside the court. Recently, a new one came to light involving a top WNBA player who expressed her issues with the league's officiating.
This came at the expense of the song of music icon,
Sabrina Carpenter
, which became a catalyst for her voice against the NBA referees on the social media platform, TikTok.
Which WNBA player used Sabrina Carpenter's song to mock officials on TikTok?
In a recent video uploaded on her TikTok, Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham decided to fire shots at the WNBA officials. She lip-synced Sabrina Carpenter's popular song, 'Manchild', particularly at some specific lyrics, "Stupid, or is it slow, or is it useless."In
the video, she sang and tagged 'some refs' in the caption.
Later on, in a tweet via her official X account, Cunningham revealed that she had been fined $500 by the WNBA for her TikTok shenanigans. She wrote, 'I got fined $500 for this TikTok 🤣🤣 idk why this is funny to me… like ok 👍🏼 you got it bud! Cause there's not more important things to be worried about with our league right now.'
This has led to a debate regarding player's freedom of expression of their grievances against the league.

While the incident drew major attention, Cunningham, so far, has been let go with a fine and not other severe consequences, even though her actions were directed straight towards the working of the WNBA.
Sophie Cunningham came to the defense of her teammate recently
Sophie Cunningham has been seen as an outspoken player who is not afraid to voice their opinion. The woman, who has come to be known as 'The Enforcer' of the Fever, recently came to the defense of her teammate and one of the WNBA's biggest names, Caitlin Clark.
She had been a target for many of her opponents on the court. On numerous occasions, she faced rough treatment, especially in the early weeks of her second season. This also included a run-in with her nemesis, Jacy Sheldon.
She apparently poked Clark in the eye in the third quarter, and Marina Mabrey shoved her to the floor. This led to Sophie coming for some payback by wrapping Sheldon's neck and dragging her to the ground just as she was going for a basket in the final moments of the match between the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun.
With Indiana cruising to a win, Sheldon was driving to the basket in the final minute when the Fever's newest enforcer wrapped her up around her neck area and dragged her down to the ground. While Cunningham faced ejection from the game and fines, it can be said that she is not willing to back down from injustice or mistreatment in the WNBA.

Rusty Bagan wary of a youthful MSC
1 2 Kolkata: Mohun Bagan SG will begin their Durand Cup campaign with an all-Indian side and against a "not so easy" Mohammedan SC here on Thursday. Not long ago Bagan's participation in Asia's oldest knockout football tournament was in doubt against the backdrop of a yet-to-be-resolved uncertainty over the Indian Super League . As a result, the reigning ISL Shield and Cup winners' senior team hit the ground running only a week ago, without Spanish head coach Jose Molina and any of his foreigners. It has been learnt that Molina is scheduled to land here in the wee hours of Friday and defender Tom Aldred is expected to arrive the following day. They conceded a last-gasp goal to go down 1-2 to debutants Diamond Harbour FC in their opening match two days ago. The Bagan assistant coach Bastab Roy — who would boss the team's dugout in Molina's absence at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday — was in the stands to get a first-hand glimpse of the young black-and-white brigade's fight and he knew that a tricky test awaits his team. "A key feature of Mohammedan SC is that they are a young team and they don't depend on any individuals and play as a team," Bastab noted during a press conference on Wednesday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are you from Egypt? From that standpoint, we need to work harder to win the match. It's not going to be easy." Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith — who would lead the team on Thursday — echoed his coach's sentiment. "They (Mohammedan SC) have already played, so their fitness level will be better. No, we can't take the match as an easy one," the ISL's Golden Glove-winner said. If early season rustiness is a worry, key defender Subhashis Bose is still undergoing his rehabilitation and attacker Manvir Singh is a doubtful starter for the opener. Five days ago, defender Dipendu Biswas and attackers Kiyan Nassiri and Suhail Bhat were pressed into service for the CFL derby but Bagan ended up losing it 2-3 to East Bengal FC. Bastab now wants his youngsters to stand up and be counted for a positive start to the new tournament. "The Durand Cup format is such that only the group winner and two second-best teams will advance to the quarterfinals. So, one loss may jeopardize your chances," Bastab said. For Mohammedan SC coach Mehrajuddin Wadoo, it's about building a better future for the team. "I'm happy with the way the young players are giving their best. Results may not be in our control. The way we conceded the goal (against DHFC) in the last minute was extremely unfortunate and luck was also not on our side. But we've to accept this and move on," Mehrajuddin told reporters. "Against Mohun Bagan, we'll try to minimize the mistakes we had committed (against DHFC) and give them a fight," he added. Video of 8-year-old peetha successor singing for his ailing 90-year-old father goes viral
Kalaburagi: The Sharanabasaveshwar Samstan and Mahadasoha Peetha's 8-year-old successor, Chiranjeevi Doddappa Appa, sang a century-old devotional song, 'Appa Sharana Basavanna…' before his 90-year-old father, Sharanabasawappa Appa, who is on ventilator support. The video went viral, with lakhs of devotees sharing it as concerns grew over Peethadhipati's health. Basavaraj Deshmukh, Peetha's secretary and brother-in-law of Sharanabasawappa Appa, told TOI that it was shot last week when Sharanabasawappa Appa was admitted to the hospital. "Thousands of devotees were worried about Sharanabasawappa's health. However, this video reduced tension as Sharanabasawappa is seen in a relaxed mood. Another singing video of 'Kotigobba Sharana…', in which the senior pontiff is also seen clapping to the tune and remarking as 'very good', is also making rounds on social media," he added. Laxman Dasti, an activist, noted that it's a heart-wrenching situation for devotees as senior Appa is suffering from age-related ailments. "The songs sung by the junior pontiff have been stored by almost all devotees, and they are even being played at temples in the region. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Suryodiningratan: Comfortable Sofas at Affordable Prices (See Offers) Comfortable Sofa | Search Ads Learn More Undo Devotees are praying for the welfare of the senior pontiff," he added. Anil Allolli, an activist in Dharwad, commented that it's a heart-touching video wishing a speedy recovery for the senior pontiff. "Many devotional songs on Kalaburagi Sharanabasaveshwar have been popular as bhajans and in other forms in north Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh," he added. Sharanabasawappa Appa is the 8th pontiff, and his son, Chiranjeevi Doddappa Appa, was crowned as the 9th Peethadhipati three years ago. It attracts about 5 lakh people during its annual fair that normally takes place in March every year. Apart from this, the peetha has been rendering yeoman service in education, agriculture, and the spiritual sectors in the north Karnataka region. According to Lingarajappa Appa, nephew of Sharanabasawappa Appa, a study was conducted by Gulbarga University in the past, and it traced over 300 temples named after Sharanabasaveshwar. He noted that the song was composed a century ago, and devotees sing it on all occasions of the Peetha. It can be recalled here that Sharanabasawappa Appa fathered a boy from his second wife at the age of 82 in Nov 2017. He has five daughters from his first wife, Matoshree Komaladevi, who died on March 23, 1993, and three daughters from his second wife, Matoshree Dakshayini Avvaji.
