'Is It Difficult To Be Patriotic?': Salman Khurshid Hits Back At Congress Criticism, BJP Reacts
Last Updated:
Khurshid's remarks came after all-party delegations, including senior Congress leaders, faced criticism from their own party, even as they highlighted India's anti-terror stance.
Congress leader Salman Khurshid reacted to constant Congress criticism over the all-party delegations sent to foreign countries to highlight India's anti-terror stand, criticisng the party for 'calculating political allegiances" during the mission against terrorism.
The grand old party has been harshly criticised for opposing the inclusion of its own senior figures in the all-party delegations organised by the Central government. Senior Congress leaders criticised their own leaders, most notably Shashi Tharoor, for supporting the ruling party's stance against terrorism.
Taking to X, Khurshid said, 'When on mission against terrorism, to carry India's message to the world, it's distressing that people at home are calculating political allegiances. Is it so difficult to be patriotic?"
When on mission against terrorism, to carry India's message to the world, it's distressing that people at home are calculating political allegiances. Is it so difficult to be patriotic?— Salman Khurshid (@salman7khurshid) June 2, 2025
Reacting to Khurshid's remark, BJP leader Amit Malviya said the sentiment was tragic and deeply ironic. 'It reflects the cost of a warped idea of secularism that the Congress party has long championed, one that confuses the urgent need to confront terror with a compulsive instinct to appease. In doing so, they have not only diluted the moral clarity required to fight extremism, but have also compromised national security in the name of vote-bank politics," he said.
'What makes this all the more tragic is the Congress party's belief that it is somehow divinely entitled to rule, a notion so deeply ingrained that it often puts the party's partisan interests above the country's welfare. Time and again, we have seen national interest sacrificed at the altar of political expediency, wrapped in lofty rhetoric but hollow in principle."
Malviya further accused the Congress of bringing in communal politics during India's fight against terrorism, emboldening enemies of the state and 'betraying" the nation.
Congress U-Turn On All-Party Delegations
Congress had initially expressed unity with the Centre after the heinous terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 tourists were gunned down by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. No sooner had the all-party delegations left for their respective countries than Congress started criticising the diplomatic outreach and even countered statements made by their own leaders.
Congress had criticised the BJP for 'cheap political games" after the latter had announced the names of leaders to lead the delegations. Four senior Congress leaders – Shashi Tharoor, Salman Khurshid, Manish Tewari and Amar Singh – without consulting the party. Tharoor is a former diplomat, and Khurshid served as the External Affairs Minister. Their names did not feature in the list of names suggested by the Congress.
Congress has also consistently criticised the government and raised repeated questions about India's military losses during Operation Sindoor, drawing sharp reactions in a particularly sensitive period.
Jairam Ramesh's comment that 'our MPs are roaming and terrorists are also roaming" drew severe backlash from the ruling party. He also hit out at Shashi Tharoor's recent remarks, stating that Tharoor's explanation of the government's anti-terror stance did not represent the official position of the Congress party.
Tharoor's remarks in Panama created another discomfort among Congress, after which the party dubbed him 'super spokesperson of the BJP". Tharoor has dismissed these remarks, saying he will speak with his colleagues once he returns to India.

Face-to-face programme flooded with requests for more Indiramma houses in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Applications for Indiramma houses within the Greater Hyderabad limits flooded the face-to-face programme conducted by BC welfare and city in charge minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, at the Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday. A majority of the people who came to the programme were from the state capital, with a few from neighbouring districts. The people urged Ponnam to sanction Indiramma houses and requested that he ask the chief minister to increase the quota of Indiramma houses for the poor in the city. The state govt sanctioned 3,500 Indiramma houses for each of the 119 assembly constituencies in the state in the first phase of the programme. Speaking to TOI, Ponnam Prabhakar said there was a lot of demand for housing in Greater Hyderabad and the Congress govt was committed to ensuring that every eligible poor family gets an Indiramma house in a phased manner. "Lakhs of applications were received during the Praja Palana programme for the Indiramma housing scheme, but field-level inquiries and document verification by the officials revealed that only 18,000 families have house sites (land). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Council or Housing Association Tenant? The minister received over 100 petitions, in addition to grievances and requests submitted orally to him during the face-to-face programme, which was revived after a few months. The programme was stopped midway without any reasons given, but sources in Gandhi Bhavan said it was due to MLC elections and other factors. It has been revived now after TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud spoke to the chief minister and also AICC in charge Meenakshi Natarajan. The AICC in charge also participated briefly in the face-to-face session and interacted with the people about the problems they were facing in getting their grievances addressed by the officials. Applications for jobs, loans for self-employment schemes, resolutions to land encroachments and disputes, new ration cards, inclusion of names on existing cards, allocation of pending allotment of 2-BHK houses, inclusion of names in the free electricity scheme, and other welfare programmes were submitted to the minister. A delegation of the Telangana Udyama Karula Forum told TOI that they urged Ponnam Prabhakar to remind the TPCC president and the CM about the Congress election manifesto, which promised a house site and a monthly pension to those who fought for statehood. They urged Ponnam to speak to the CM and ensure that a committee is constituted to identify all such Udyama Karulu. "It is not only about the monthly honorarium and house site, but mainly about acknowledgement that we fought and achieved statehood. The govt should give us a memento or certificate, which we will display in our houses and offices as a mark of pride and self-respect that we were at the forefront of the statehood agitation," said forum leader Taduri Gagan Kumar.

Bilawal Bhutto seeks dialogue with India, intel sharing to combat terrorism
The Pakistani side has suffered great losses after it attempted to target Indian defence and civil installations in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. Bhutto, who served as the Foreign Minister earlier, addressed a briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York and sought reconciliation with India, making a plea for talks and Intel sharing between the two neighbours. New York: On a day that the Indian all-party delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor arrived in Washington, DC as part of the global outreach on Operation Sindoor, Pakistan's delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto was in New York to try to push its case. As per an ongoing analysis of the damage inflicted upon by the Indian Air Force on Pakistan Air Force, it is emerging that 6 PAF fighter jets, two high-value aircraft, over 10 UCAVs, one C-130 transport aircraft, along with multiple cruise missiles, were destroyed by Indian air-launched cruise missiles and surface-to-air missiles. Now Bhutto wants to go back to diplomacy and dialogue, emphasising that it was the only viable path to peace. 'Pakistan would still like to cooperate with India to combat terrorism. We can't leave the fate of 1.5 billion, 1.7 billion people in the hands of non-state actors and terrorists,' he said. 'For them to decide, at a whim, that (when these) two nuclear-armed powers will go to war.' This statement, in effect, gives credence to India's stand that terror operatives based in Pakistan had planned the Pahalgam attack that saw the killing of 26 innocent people. India has also publicly stated that any further terrorist activity would warrant similar action. But Bhutto stressed the need for a dispute resolution mechanism. You can't have no dispute resolution mechanisms between two nuclear-armed countries,' he said. Ironically, Bhutto also suggested cooperation between Pakistan and India's intelligence agencies to take on terrorism in South Asia. 'I am completely confident that if ISI and RAW were ready to sit down and work together to fight these forces, we would see a significant decrease in terrorism in both India and Pakistan,' he said. Bhutto's placatory stance shows how deeply Pakistan has been affected by the strikes carried out during Operation Sindoor and Pakistan's need to seek peace in these circumstances. Cabinet will discuss JAC demands, CM firm on resolving employees' issues: Bhatti
Hyderabad: Ahead of the cabinet meeting on Thursday, deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka-led cabinet sub-committee held talks with govt employees' JAC leaders on Wednesday and assured them that the Congress govt considered their 57 demands as genuine. "Despite financial constraints, the CM is firm on resolving their issues. The cabinet sub-committee will submit a report to the govt with its recommendations, and the cabinet meeting on Thursday will decide which of the financial intensive and other demands will be accepted," Bhatti said. Sources told TOI that the cabinet meeting was likely to give preference to clearing a significant quantum of the pending Rs 10,000 bills of the employees and may announce release of one Dearness Allowance and time frame for another DA. The govt may also accept demand of new health cards, but a final decision on "cashless and capless treatment" would be taken after cabinet discussion. The govt may also revise the treatment slabs fixed nearly nine years ago. However, contrary to expectations, sources said the cabinet may not decide on enhancing the retirement age from the present 61 to 64 years following intelligence reports on severe backlash from students and youth. We are confident that tomorrow's cabinet meeting will find solutions to many of the demands of the JAC," he said while emphasising the need for their cooperation so that neither the public nor employees face difficulties. He said that it was due to financial issues resulting from the past decade's governance that bills and other demands of the employees piled up. "The Congress is continuing many welfare schemes of the previous government and is also implementing its own promises. Also, new schemes not announced in the manifesto have been launched. All this is being done without any additional tax on the citizens. The govt is committed to addressing employees' demands as part of this effort," Bhatti said. On their part, the JAC leaders said they would decide their future course of action based on the cabinet decision. The JAC has threatened to launch protest programmes in a phased manner, followed by a pen-down strike from June 9 onwards, if at least some of their important demands are not met. The JAC has demanded 51% fitment (PRC), release of at least three of the five pending DAs and Rs 10,000 crore employees bills, new health cards with cashless and capless treatment, revision of old rates of medical treatment and a number of non-financial issues such as general transfers. Besides these issues, the cabinet meeting on Thursday is also expected to discuss the approval of loans to unemployed youth under Rajiv Yuva Vikasam, implementation status of various development projects and those to be launched with central assistance, and national dam safety authority and vigilance reports.
