In a country where many are only truly honoured after death, the recognition of Kaizer Motaung while still alive is something to be celebrated.
On Tuesday, the University of the Witwatersrand conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Commerce upon the Kaizer Chiefs founder and owner. It marks the second such accolade for Motaung, who was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences by the University of Cape Town in 2022.
This latest honour acknowledges 'Chincha Guluva's' immense role in uplifting disadvantaged youth, promoting social cohesion, and developing football as both a sport and a unifying force in South Africa.

Speaking at the Wits Great Hall during the university's graduation ceremony, Motaung shared words of encouragement and wisdom with the Wits Class of 2025.
'Be pioneers in your own right, pushing boundaries and breaking down barriers. Use your talents and skills to make a positive impact on our society,' he said.
'Nelson Mandela taught us that education is the most powerful tool which you can use to change the world. I urge you to get involved in initiatives that promote sports development, education, and economic empowerment. Use your knowledge and skills to empower others and to create a brighter future for our country.'
A lifelong team player, Motaung said the recognition was not only a tribute to his personal journey but also to the game that shaped his life.
'This honour is not just about me,' he said. 'It is a tribute to the beautiful game of football that has given me so much.'
He also credited the club's supporters, acknowledging that Kaizer Chiefs' success would not have been possible without their unwavering loyalty and belief.
Reflecting on his relationship with the university, Motaung revealed that his connection to Wits dates back to the apartheid era, forged on the football pitch.
'My love for Wits runs deep,' he said, alluding to past ties that transcended the sporting arena during a time of division and struggle.

Why Kaizer Chiefs can't afford another striker misfire

PORTUGUESE striker Flavio Silva has so far devided opinions after signing for Kaizer Chiefs. | @KaizerChiefs Kaizer Chiefs have taken steps to fix their long-standing striker problem, but with past failures still fresh in memory, their next signing simply cannot afford to be another letdown. After years of frustration up front, the Soweto giants have once again gone into the market in search of goals. Christian Saile and Ranga Chivaviro were both released after failing to make the desired impact, while Tashreeq Morris has yet to win over the technical team. In response, Chiefs moved quickly to bring in Portuguese striker Flávio Silva from Indonesian club Persebaya Surabaya. Silva, 29, is not a young prospect or a player signed for potential — he's expected to deliver immediately. But already, question marks are forming around his fitness and sharpness, especially after a pre-season campaign that has not inspired universal confidence. Some supporters have voiced concerns, wary of another stop-gap solution in a position that has been mishandled far too often in recent years.

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Hans Vonk sings Kaizer Chiefs' praises on Netherlands tour

PLAYERS like Nkosingiphile Ngcobo (above), Nkanyiso Shinga, and Sibongiseni Mthethwe showed promise during Kaizer Chiefs' tour matches in the Netherlands. | BackpagePix Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Hans Vonk was impressed by several Kaizer Chiefs players after observing their performance during a midweek match on their Netherlands tour. Since arriving in the Netherlands, Chiefs have captivated the hearts of local fans, signalling the growing interest in South African football outside its borders. The tour proved to be an essential platform for Chiefs, who embraced the warm reception by Dutch supporters. Vonk, who bagged 43 international caps while playing for Ajax Cape Town, was on hand to watch the match against Dutch Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, who lost 1-0 in Meppel. Before kick-off, he was greeted by several former Ajax players, including current squad members Brandon Petersen, Dillan Solomons, Tashreeq Morris, and Rushwin Dortley, highlighting the strong sense of community and camaraderie that exists in South African football. Reflecting on the Chiefs' performance, Vonk said that the South Africans faced challenges adapting to the playing conditions after their initial 15 minutes. 'I can imagine that the players would need to adjust to the pitches in their first few friendly matches in Holland,' he said to 'The fields here are softer compared to what they are used to in South Africa. The ball circulation is also quicker, especially when facing quality Eredivisie sides. It's something the players needed to adapt to.' Despite a shaky start, Chiefs composed themselves, with Vonk praising their organisational strength. He particularly noted the skills of players such as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Nkanyiso Shinga, and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, suggesting that each showed promise during the match. Vonk remained unconcerned about the team's three losses before this game. "I am not interested in those losses," he remarked, reflecting on the purpose of pre-season games. 'It's all about getting ready for the season. Besides that, the players had to adapt to the different circumstances in Holland and the strong Dutch opponents they played against.' Looking back on his career, Vonk noted: 'For sure, as a goalkeeper I hated conceding a goal and losing, even in pre-season. However, it's all about the new experiences in Holland, about playing matches against competitive sides, getting the rhythm right, and building a team… that's what a coach is looking at during pre-season.' He expressed confidence that the pre-season camp would be beneficial for the entire squad. "I am sure they will all have learnt a lot," he added. Vonk also took a moment to reminisce about the support he received from Kaizer Chiefs fans during his time in Cape Town: 'I always had the greatest admiration for the Chiefs supporters. "They were always very sympathetic, and I never saw them in a fight or something like that. It was really about Love & Peace!' The highlight of the evening for Vonk came when Naledi Hlongwane netted the winner, prompting him to engage excitedly with Amakhosi fans as they celebrated together. As the new season looms on the horizon, Vonk remains optimistic about the future of the Kaizer Chiefs. 'I hope that Chiefs will be able to return to the level where they belong, being competitive and challenging for trophies,' he concluded, encapsulating the aspirations shared by countless fans of the club.

Ngcobo promises an 'improved' Chiefs after completion of preseason in the Netherlands

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo is looking forward to a better season with Kaizer Chiefs after undergoing a preseason with the club in the Netherlands where he learnt a few things in the five training matches they played. The midfielder featured in some of the matches Chiefs played against Utrecht, Vitesse, Twente FC, PEC Zwolle and NEC Breda. 'Personally, I feel good, I improved in some respects,' said Ngcobo. 'I learnt a lot in this camp and also as a team we have learnt and improved. For me, I have improved and I think the supporters will get the Mshini [his nickname] they know but with improvements.' Amakhosi return to South Africa to start preparing for their final preseason official friendly — a Toyota Cup clash against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on July 26. Chiefs, who finished ninth on the Betway Premiership log last season under Tunisian mentor Nasreddine Nabi, open their league campaign on August 10 away to Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium according to provisional fixtures.
