DMK MP Opposition's Favourite For Veep Polls, But Trinamool Has A Problem

New Delhi: The Opposition INDIA bloc is likely to pick the DMK's Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva as its Vice-Presidential candidate, in a strategic move that would pit the senior Tamil Nadu politician against another from his state in the upcoming election and overcome the key hurdle posed by regional politics, said sources. The official nominee will be known only after Opposition parties meet this evening at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's house to decide on their candidate. Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, one of the BJP's tallest leaders in Tamil Nadu, is the NDA's candidate for the September 9 election, the central ruling party had announced last evening. The untimely Vice-Presidential election follows the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, officially over health concerns, though sources had later pointed out differences with the BJP that ought to have forced the senior Jat leader to an early exit. Choosing Mr Siva as its candidate could help the Opposition navigate the intricacies of regional politics, the sources indicated, highlighting several factors that may go in favour of the Tamil Nadu politician. However, it may lead to a fallout with the Trinamool Congress, a key component of the INDIA bloc. Sources within the Mamata Banerjee-led party had earlier suggested that a non-political figure be projected for the Vice-Presidential election, insisting on building a consensus unlike last time. The Trinamool had abstained from voting in the last Vice Presidential election, disagreeing with the Opposition's choice of Congress leader Margaret Alva. Mr Dhankhar had won that election. The fact that Mr Radhakrishnan is from Tamil Nadu would counter the NDA's South push - and draw support from southern parties, if he eventually becomes the Opposition face. More importantly, this wouldn't leave the DMK in two minds; they wouldn't think twice before supporting one of their own. The DMK, however, has already asserted that it would support only the INDIA bloc's candidate. TKS Elangovan, spokesperson of the DMK, had called Mr Radhakrishnan's NDA candidature an "election propaganda" and said that fielding a Tamilian was not the same as being "pro-Tamil Nadu". "Projecting a Tamilian is not pro-Tamil Nadu. Otherwise, the BJP is against Tamil Nadu. They are not giving proper funds. For everything, they are not supporting Tamil Nadu in all terms," he told NDTV in an exclusive interview yesterday, saying that the BJP "does not want Tamil Nadu to prosper". Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagendran has described Mr Radhakrishnan's nomination as a moment of pride for the Tamils, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility, and intellect in his political career. "In his long years in public life, Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji has distinguished himself with his dedication, humility, and intellect. During the various positions he has held, he has always focused on community service and empowering the marginalised," said PM Modi in an online post. After the BJP's parliamentary board's decision to project Mr Radhakrishnan as its face, party chief JP Nadda had hoped that the opposition parties would support the NDA candidate, though the INDIA bloc had already asserted it would field its own candidate. The last date for filing nomination for the Vice-Presidential election is August 22.

Podcaster Calls Team Uddhav MP "Shashi Tharoor In Saree". He Responds

New Delhi: A prominent podcaster's "Shashi Tharoor in a saree" comment on Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has drawn a witty response from the senior Congress MP. Mr Tharoor has said he considers himself "flattered" with this comparison with the fellow MP. During the ANI podcast with senior journalist Smita Prakash, Ms Chaturvedi was asked about her recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which sparked rumours that the Shiv Sena (UBT) MP may switch sides. "I sometimes love irritating people because they are so invested in my life. 'Where is she going next?'" she replied. Ms Prakash quipped, "You are Shashi Tharoor in a saree basically, that's what you are." To this, Ms Chaturvedi responded with a laugh and added, "I don't know if that's a compliment for Shashi or a compliment for me. But I am going to tell Shashi." Thanks, Priyanka. I consider myself flattered either way! — Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) August 18, 2025 Ms Chaturvedi said that as soon as she shared the photographs of her meeting with the Prime Minister on social media, her critics started claiming that they had foreseen a party switch. "Keep doing this, you know what I am doing in my life. Please be happy," she said. Mr Tharoor has now responded to the "Shashi Tharoor in a saree" remark and Ms Chaturvedi's reply that she did not know if it was a compliment for her or the Congress MP. Sharing a clip from the podcast, he has said, "Thanks, Priyanka. I consider myself flattered either way!" During the podcast, Ms Chaturvedi took questions on her political positions, how she deals with trolls, and her party backed her when she represented India in one of the Indian delegations that went abroad to articulate New Delhi's standpoint after Operation Sindoor. "I am a very vocal member of the Opposition when I am in my country. But when I am outside my country, I am the ambassador for my nation," she said. Ms Chaturvedi said she had a "nice 20-minute conversation" with the Prime Minister and that she told him that this was first time she was part of a parliamentary delegation abroad. She also spoke about the language row in Maharashtra and how the Sena (UBT) has distanced itself from violence over language.

Assam govt, Army deliberate on furthering cooperation, welfare measures in state

Guwahati, Aug 18 (PTI) The Assam government on Monday held discussions with a delegation of the Indian Army to deepen cooperation, strengthen welfare measures and foster a spirit of service and patriotism among the state's youth, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota said. The issues taken up during the discussion ranged from proposal to increase existing quota for government jobs for ex-servicemen to veteran employment to absorption of Agniveers to basic military grooming in schools, he added. 'Chaired an important meeting today with Major General Hartej Singh Bajaj, VSM, Headquarters 4 Corps, along with a delegation of the Indian Army," the CS said in a post on his official X account. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the home and political department, Assam Police, general administrative department, and personnel department, and focused on charting a roadmap for enhanced collaboration and deeper partnership between the Indian Army and the state government, he added. Sharing the key areas reviewed and outcomes, Kota said a proposal to increase the reservation for ex-servicemen in Assam from the existing 2 per cent to 5 per cent was discussed. 'The personnel department will collect inputs from select states and prepare a statement for further processing of the matter," he added. The home department was directed to assess the vacancy position. Till December 2024, 332 veterans have been employed by Assam Police, and 284 have been engaged by the Indian Army across sectors such as finance, security and PSUs. The Directorate of Sainik Welfare has been tasked with submitting a district-wise profile of all veterans, Kota said. An initiative implemented since 2023 to provide necessary support to the next of kin (NoK) of soldiers (Army/Navy/Air Force) who made the supreme sacrifice was reviewed. A proposal for extending government jobs to the NoK of martyred Central Armed Police Forces personnel was examined, the CS said. For absorption of Agniveers, the Assam Police Headquarters was asked to submit a comprehensive report on recruitment norms to the home department. The home department will coordinate with the defence counterpart, incorporate directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs and submit the report to the chief minister for guidance, Kota said in the post on X. The home department and the chief minister's office will also coordinate to strengthen engagement with Defence personnel. The department will prepare a comprehensive list of ex-servicemen and institutionalise 'Jan-Sunwai' (public hearing) at regular intervals in identified districts for veterans' benefit. A SOP will be drafted by the department accordingly. The idea of creating a dedicated 'Sainik Samwad' tab on the chief minister's web portal for swift grievance redressal was also taken up at the meeting. Following the Maharashtra model, the school education department will explore leveraging veterans to promote basic military grooming in government schools, the CS said. For old age home for veterans, the home and political department was instructed to issue directions to the department of social justice and empowerment. It will also coordinate with the Sainik Welfare Board to identify a feasible existing location or infrastructure. Going forward, this initiative will be developed as a joint venture between the Government of Assam and the Indian Army, Kota said. To inspire youth to join the armed forces, an institutionalised mechanism will be initiated wherein serving officers, veterans and spouses will visit educational institutions to deliver lectures on 'Operation Sindoor' and other nation-building themes. For further beautification of the Guwahati War Memorial, the Army will share exhibits, flags and other items with the tourism department. The state government and the Army will also collaborate on identifying and developing Military Tourism Circuits.
