Teen Ford Escape owner learns hard truth about used car buying. How to avoid overpaying.

A young driver learns the importance of car buying research the hard way, says a TikTok video. Buying a used car without doing your due diligence can lead to huge issues. One teenager learned about used car buying the hard way when they attempted to trade in their recently-purchased Ford Escape SUV. Additionally, they learned why you should always determine a vehicle's fair market value before purchasing it or enrolling in any payment plan. What happens when you finance a vehicle for much more than it's worth? You end up trapped in a car loan for a vehicle you may no longer want. Young driver pays way too much for Ford Escape at Alabama dealership Popular TikTok account The Truck Center recently posted a video detailing a customer interaction with a young driver (18-19 years old), who had purchased a 2010 Ford Escape with 185,000 miles on it. For context, an Escape SUV that has accumulated that many miles has lived well past its best years in the life cycle of such a vehicle. Another car dealer took advantage of our customer! 18 year old kid owes tooooo much on a old Ford Escape! #carsoftiktok #carbusiness #storytime #trucksoftiktok #trucksforlife According to the video, the owner still owed $4,200 on the old Explorer. This is alarming, since the car is over a decade old and has the mileage to prove it. The 2010 Explorer has a fair purchase price of $4,427, according to Kelley Blue Book. So, the idea of the teen driver owing an additional $4,200 on the SUV after paying fees and putting money down ($1,500-$2,000) is disheartening to say the least. TheTruckCenter described the Ford Escape as a $500-$1,000 vehicle. So, the young driver owes money on a car that has virtually no trade in value to used car dealers looking to make a fair deal because of its age, high mileage, and current market value. They are stuck with an old SUV that's worth next to nothing and is depreciating by the mile. How to avoid overpaying for a used car The young driver described in the TikTok above made one major mistake: overpaying for a used vehicle well past its prime. How do you avoid overpaying for a used car when car salesman can be so convincing? The short answer is research. Before ever agreeing to purchase a used car, it's helpful to know the current market value. Otherwise, you could spend thousands of dollars paying for a vehicle that is worth significantly less money and has mechanical issues in its near future. The best way to conduct market value research is to look up the year, make and model that you're interested in. Additionally, if you want to avoid mechanical issues, newer models with 50,000 miles or less tend to be less prone to have issues early on. If the young driver looked into the fair market value of the 2010 Ford Explorer using tools like Kelley Blue Book's pricing tool, they could have avoided the negative experience entirely. While transportation is necessary, jumping on a used car too soon without the proper research could prove to be a costly and frustrating mistake. How to know which used cars are good to buy If you're in the market for a used car, truck or SUV and have no idea where to start or no preference, ranking lists can act as a great guide. Looking up the best cars, trucks or SUVs, of a particular year will yield results showcasing models with excellent reviews from experts. For example, U.S. News & World Report has compiled a list of Best Cars for the Money for the year 2020. The list mentions the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2020 Kia Sorento and 2020 Honda CR-V as notable SUVs. American car buyers can then look up specific years, makes and models from ranking lists to determine their fair market value, so they get an idea of how much they should be paying. Ultimately, there's a great deal of subjectivity when it comes to choosing a used vehicle, but market value is concrete and devoid of opinion. Before making any used car purchasing decisions, make sure you know exactly what the vehicle is worth.

Ford Drops Sporty 2025 Explorer ST Lease Offer for August

For more than three decades, the Ford Explorer has been a familiar sight on American roads, evolving from a boxy SUV into a refined family hauler. However, the 2025 Explorer ST ups the excitement, blending everyday practicality with the performance and style of a true enthusiast's machine. The ST isn't just about sharper looks-it's powered by a twin-turbocharged V6 with muscle to spare and backed by a chassis tuned for spirited driving. It's proof that a three-row SUV can still make your pulse quicken. This August, Ford's lease offer makes stepping into one more tempting than ever. This month, shoppers can lease a 2025 Explorer ST for $492 per month for 48 months with $6,139 due at signing. The offer includes 10,500 annual miles, waives the security deposit, and excludes taxes, title, and license fees. Given the ST's blend of performance and luxury features, this lease stacks up well against other performance-oriented SUVs in its class-especially considering its three-row versatility. For 2025, the Explorer lineup gets a subtle refresh, and the ST wears it especially well. A reshaped grille, slimmer LED headlights, and bold wheel designs give it an athletic stance, while inside, upgraded soft-touch surfaces and available contrast stitching add to the upscale feel. The standard 13.2-inch touchscreen runs Ford's quicker SYNC 4A infotainment system, and the available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster keeps key performance data front and center. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, so you can keep your favorite driving soundtrack queued up without the cord clutter. Under the hood, the ST packs a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 producing 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. It's enough to launch this family hauler with surprising urgency while still offering up to 5,600 pounds of towing capacity when properly equipped. Yes, the ST is quick-but it's also built for daily life. Three rows of seating, up to 87.8 cubic feet of cargo space, and Ford's Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assist features mean it's as practical as it is fun. Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and multiple USB ports make long trips easier, whether you're ferrying the kids to practice or heading out for a weekend getaway. With a wide dealer network and a lease offer that puts it within reach for more buyers, the Explorer ST stands out as a rare blend of performance, comfort, and capability in the three-row segment. Performance SUVs often require big compromises in space, comfort, or price-but the 2025 Explorer ST manages to keep things balanced. This August's lease offer gives driving enthusiasts a chance to get behind the wheel of one without stretching too far. If you've been waiting for an SUV that can haul both your gear and your adrenaline, the ST might be your perfect match. *Disclaimer: This article is provided for informational purposes only. The 2026 Hyundai Palisade is bigger and smarter, just don't expect more power

Hyundai's flagship SUV gets bigger and better for 2026, adding an array of thoughtful features and its first model with meaningful off-road capacity. The Palisade is a seven- or eight-seat SUV that competes with vehicles like the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Grand Highlander. It comes with front- or all-wheel drive. A gasoline model is in dealerships now, with a hybrid arriving later this year. Palisade prices start at $38,935 for a front-drive model. The new XRT Pro model, with features including AWD and all-terrain tires, starts at $49,370. A Palisade hybrid arrives later this year. Prices for it will start at $43,660. All prices exclude a $1,495 destination charge. While the '26 Palisade is heavier than last year's model, it won't offer more power until the hybrid goes on sale. 2026 Hyundai Palisade selected trim levels and prices Palisade SE FWD, $38,935 Palisade SEL AWD, $43,440 Palisade XRT Pro AWD, $49,370 Palisade Calligraphy AWD, $56,060 Palisade Hybrid Blue SEL FWD, $$43,660 Palisade Hybrid SEL AWD, $$45,660 Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD, $58,280 Source: Edmunds. Prices exclude $1,495 destination charge What's new? What's better? The 2026 Palisade is based on a new architecture it shares with Hyundai's midsize Santa Fe SUV. It's noticeably bigger than the previous model, with a longer wheelbase and shorter front overhang. The Wheelbase grew 2.7 inches. Overall length increased 2.5. Height and width grew 0.2 and 0.6 inch, respectively. The Palisade remains shorter than key competitors like the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Toyota Grand Highlander. It leads the group in passenger space, however. Cargo room behind the third row of seats rates in the middle of the pack. The Palisade's profile is recognizable from the previous generation. New touches include geometric fender flares and vertical DRLs and taillights. The outdoorsy XRT Pro model is new, adding capability to a trim package on the XRT. Functional changes include an electronic limited-slip differential, all-terrain tires and front and rear fascia modifications to improve approach and departure angles. The XRT Pro has four chassis-mounted recovery hooks. 2026 Hyundai Palisade key features Seats 7 or 8 Lighted second-row seat belt receivers D-pillar grab handles UV-C sterilizer for devices Power adjustable second- and third-row seats Factory-installed dash camera with four-day memory 100w USB-C charging ports Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Nappa leather seating 14-speaker Bose audio Electronic limited slip differential on XRT Pro All-terrain tires on XRT Pro New pickup truck reviews: This Ram 1500 truck may be the most reliable of 2025 but is it worth buying? Driving impressions The Palisade is roomy and quiet on the road. Power is adequate, but not a selling point. The ride was smooth on-road. The XRT Pro I drove scrambled up steep inclines of loose clay and negotiated a series of bumps and hollows that frequently left one wheel suspended without undue drama. Its suspension absorbed surface-street impacts well, but I wouldn't advise rock crawling. Steep hills, ruts and low-traction surfaces were easily navigable. The 3.5L V6 generates 287 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque, the same as last year's 3.8L V6 did in the smaller 2025 Palisade. The engine is linked to a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid will be the premium drivetrain, with 329 hp and 339 pound-feet of torque. Interior look and feel The interior is roomy and trimmed in materials that would look at home on a pricier vehicle from a ritzier brand. Armrests, doors and dash — the spots you're most likely to look and touch — were wrapped in soft, attractive materials. Controls include conventional switches and dials for key climate and audio functions. The touch screen is big, clear and reasonably responsive. XRT was embossed on the head rests, and jagged lines on the seat backs recall mountain vistas. Front and rear video cameras are useful for parking and on trails. The view turns off around 4 mph, though: fine for parking lots, but too low to be really useful off-road. What could be better? The gasoline-only Palisade's acceleration is adequate, but not a strong point. Commuters with heavily traveled routes may wish for more on-ramp oomph, or wait for reviews of the hybrid arriving later this year. The XRT Pro provides more off-road capability than the previous Palisade SRT, but that's a low bar to clear. Its trail view cameras shut off at a very low speed and frequently left me seeking a forward view that was no longer available on a short off-road route. Why buy a 2026 Hyundai Palisade? The 2026 Hyundai Palisade is a roomy and elegant three-row SUV. It packs a lot of passenger space into an easy to park footprint. It looks good inside and out. I expect other automakers will scramble to match unique features like power sliding third-row seats, lighted second-row seat belt receivers and a factory-installed dashcam with memory. 2026 Hyundai Palisade at a glance Front- or all-wheel drive full-size SUV Seats seven or eight Base price: $38,935.
