Economists laud RM100 aid as timely respite for households

The Sun5 days ago
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's latest cost-of-living relief plan is drawing praise from economists, who say the RM100 one-off cash handout – expected to inject RM2.2 billion directly into the domestic economy – could provide an immediate boost in spending and ease the burden on struggling households.
Dr Mohamad Idham Md Razak, senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Puncak Alam, said the cash aid, which will be given to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, could act as a short-term economic stimulus, particularly for youths and low-income groups.
'With three adults in a household, that's RM300. It's a quick injection that could lift spending on retail, food and essentials and support small traders.
'But without follow-up measures such as job creation or sustainable financial aid, the effect may not last,' he told theSun.
He said Anwar's broader cost-of-living package – including fuel subsidy adjustments, expanded food assistance and a freeze on toll hikes – signals the government's effort to tackle inflation and shield household income on several fronts.
He highlighted the RM600 million boost for the Jualan Rahmah programme as one of the most strategic moves.
'By offering essential goods at discounted prices, this directly lowers household spending and helps cushion inflation.'
Mohamad Idham also welcomed the toll hike postponement involving 10 highways, saying it would ease the burden on daily commuters and small business operators.
'This brings real relief, especially for those travelling long distances for work. It helps preserve consumer spending and dampens inflationary spillover. But ultimately, the government needs a more sustainable model for infrastructure financing.'
On fuel subsidies, he said the government is on the right track.
'We welcome this, but the government should also explore targeted options, with added support for the M40 through tax breaks or tailored cash aid.'
Economist Professor Geoffrey Williams described the cash handout a 'smart and meaningful' initiative that could serve as a test bed for a Universal Basic Income (UBI) framework.
'This is an unconditional, automatic cash transfer – no applications, no eligibility hurdles. That's the DNA of a UBI.
'If scaled up, it could evolve into monthly payments and pave the way for reforming the STR (Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah) and SARA (Sumbangan Asas Rahmah) schemes.'
Williams suggested Malaysia could even lead globally in rolling out a nationwide UBI model.
'If developed properly, it could be a bold signature of Anwar's social policy legacy.'
He added that the move is financially viable, especially with savings from the ongoing subsidy rationalisation drive and would generate a ripple effect in local economies.
'For the B40 and lower M40 groups, RM100 is significant. Most of it will be spent in neighbourhood shops and stalls – directly stimulating grassroots demand. It can help lift consumer spending in the second half of the year.'
Williams acknowledged the public's scepticism, but urged Malaysians to view the move on its merits.
'This is a solid step forward. The government deserves credit for it.'
The RM100 cash aid, set to be disbursed via MyKad from Aug 31, is expected to benefit over 22 million Malaysians. It complements existing food subsidies, fuel support and frozen toll rates under the government's multi-pronged strategy to ease living costs.

PM says it exceeds target for mission to tackle poverty THE corporate sector has pledged RM120mil to the 'Sejahtera Madani' initiative, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says. He said this figure was more than double the original target of RM50mil. 'The Sejahtera Madani initiative marks a new chapter in the government's approach to tackling poverty and hardcore poverty. 'The programme brings together private sector and government efforts through targeted interventions in education, income generation, housing and welfare,' he said in a social media post. Anwar said the initiative was part of the Madani government's mission to eradicate hardcore poverty. 'Since 2023, nearly 150,000 households have moved out of the hardcore poor category. 'My hope is that through Sejahtera Madani, we can fully lift them out of the cycle of poverty.' He said the Government would continue to coordinate efforts under the initiative. 'Whether large or small, what matters is the sincerity and willingness to go to the ground and contribute time, energy and expertise for our shared well-being. 'Malaysia is a great nation with big-hearted people. 'With the spirit of Sejahtera Madani, let us work together to build a fairer, more inclusive and prosperous future, without leaving behind anyone,' the Prime Minister added.

Govt launches 'Anak Merdeka Malaysia' initiative to boost patriotic spirit

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Unity Ministry, through the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM), has introduced the "Anak Merdeka Malaysia" initiative to ignite patriotic spirit in conjunction with this year's National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM) celebrations. It said the programme also aims to honour Malaysians born on two of the nation's most historic dates – August 31 and September 16 – as a symbol of the country's struggle, independence and unity. Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said in the statement that the initiative is not merely about celebrating birthdays, but also about recognising the profound meaning those dates hold in strengthening national identity and patriotism. "Through 'Anak Merdeka Malaysia', we are not only celebrating their birthdays, but also uniting the voices of the people under one national identity. "This is the true face of Malaysia Madani – a nation that honours its history, nurtures hope, and unites its people," said Aaron. According to the ministry, registration is now open to all Malaysian citizens who share a birthday on either of these two historic dates, regardless of background, age or ethnicity. The statement added that those who register will be given the special opportunity to take part in various activities during the official national-level celebrations, receive commemorative gifts, and be honoured as symbolic national heroes representing the spirit of Malaysian unity. "The ministry calls on all Malaysians to help spread this information to family members, friends and local communities, so that more people can be celebrated as part of the Merdeka legacy. "This is our chance as citizens to strengthen patriotism through inclusive and meaningful participation," it said in a statement yesterday. – Bernama

US welcomes Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire, urges full commitment

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States (US) has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, announced in Putrajaya on Monday, and urged both sides to fully honour their commitments to end the conflict. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commended Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his decisive leadership in brokering the deal. "The United States applauds the ceasefire declaration between Cambodia and Thailand announced today. "President Donald Trump and I are committed to an immediate cessation of violence and expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honour their commitments to end this conflict. "We are grateful to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire talks," he said in a statement released by the State Department. Rubio said the US will remain committed to and engaged in the US-Malaysia-organised process to end the conflict. "We urge all parties to follow through on their commitments," he added. Earlier, a special meeting, brokered by Anwar in his capacity as the current Asean chair, was held at the official residence of the Malaysian prime minister, the Seri Perdana Complex, in Putrajaya. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the special meeting, which began at 3pm. This is their first face-to-face encounter since tensions erupted between the two neighbours on July 24. The meeting lasted nearly two and a half hours. Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China was an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. At a joint press conference after the meeting, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid rising tensions along their disputed border. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817km undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. – Bernama
