Broadband providers including EE, Sky, and BT will pay shoppers up to £300 to switch

The thought of changing broadband providers can seem daunting. Much like swapping mobile phone networks, many customers opt to remain with their current provider to sidestep the lengthy admin of transitioning to a new one.
However, for those feeling the pinch from price hikes and eager to secure a more affordable deal, not only is the process straightforward, but a new provider could also absorb any exit fees incurred, with some offering up to £300, as our tech writer Chris Hall shares.
Writing for The Mirror, he explains how this allows consumers to lock into a more cost-effective package and avoids bill payers racking up unnecessary fees over time.
While it's not widely publicised, the fine print reveals that EE will pay shoppers up to £300 when they switch, Sky offers customers up to £200 to offset the cost of switching, and Hyperoptic provides up to nine months of free service. This means consumers can hop onto Sky's £28 Full Fibre 300 deal, with Sky chipping in towards exit fees.
Broadband deals:
Thanks to One Touch Switch, introduced by Ofcom in September 2024, the process of changing broadband suppliers has been greatly simplified. All customers need to do is provide their details to their new provider, who will then handle everything.
Despite the ease of the process, if users terminate their contract prematurely, they may face a penalty charge, which could amount to hundreds. For instance, BT calculates the early termination fee based on the total that would have been paid on the contract, minus any fees that BT will save as a result of the customer's departure.
As part of a bid to alleviate these expenses, many broadband providers are offering to pay switching fees on the consumers' behalf. EE's website states: "We'll also give you up to £300 towards any early leaving charges."
Meanwhile, BT also covers switching fees upon in-store inquiries or over phone calls, as reported by ISPreview.
Several major broadband companies are willing to provide compensation towards early cancellation charges. Therefore, for those looking to leave their high-priced contract, migrating to such providers can be a seamless and hassle-free process.
Nonetheless, customers should seek guidance from their providers first as the switch credit often requires the final invoice of the previous broadband provider so always worth checking first.

Surprise Sky sale sees cheapest ever price for Google Pixel 9 phones

Sky Mobile has slashed the prices on Google Pixel 9 devices, meaning it's now possible to get the Android smartphone for as little as £14 a month Sky Mobile has slashed prices on Google's Pixel phones, with monthly costs as low as £14, causing a flurry of shoppers to snap up the Android device. Discounts are available across all Pixel 9 devices, and tech expert Chris Hall, who reviews numerous phones each year, takes a gander at the specs and sales. Let's kick off with the latest addition, the Pixel 9a. This is Google's most budget-friendly model in the Pixel 9 series, launched in April 2025, so it's fresh off the production line. It has the same core hardware as the Pixel 9 Pro, offering plenty of power for taking photos, gaming or sifting through emails. Sky Mobile has reduced the price to £14 a month, with no upfront cost, making this an affordable way to get your hands on the newest Pixel, reports the Daily Record. Sky also provides a variety of data plans, starting from £0 a month, but the discounted 50GB plan at £10 a month is particularly eye-catching. Combined, users will have ample data and a top-notch phone to utilise it, all for £24 a month. Buyers should be aware that if they opt for the 50GB data plan, the discount only applies for six months - therefore, it's always wise to double-check before committing to a lengthy plan. While Sky Mobile's Pixel 9a deal seems tempting, they're not the only provider offering these competitive prices. Chris checked out the offers at GiffGaff - one of the networks with the highest customer satisfaction ratings, according to The Mirror. It is offering the Pixel 9a with 50GB data for £25.87 a month, and in this case, the data plan price won't hike up after 6 months. Sky Mobile is offering the Pixel 9 Pro XL for £28 per month, down from its original price of £34 per month. This means customers can save £144 on the cost of this phone over the contract term. Users can pair it with as much data as they desire. The Pixel 9 Pro XL requires an upfront payment of £12. The Pixel 9a is packed with features to get excited about, including a clean Android experience and seven years of software updates. It has a 6.3-inch display, although the wide bezel around it might not be to everyone's liking due to it being a more affordable model. However, its flat finish makes it ideal for gaming, and Chris found it to be a reliable phone for everyday use. He said: "The icing on the cake is undoubtedly the camera. Despite only having a dual camera and lacking the zoom feature of the Pro model, the consistency and quality of the photos it produces are unrivalled in this price range. "Additionally, it provides users with access to Google's AI, the most exciting feature of which is housed in Magic Editor, making photo editing a breeze. However, as much as I appreciate the Pixel 9a, I find the screen size too small." The Pixel 9 Pro XL is Chris's top pick. "Firstly, it has a larger 6.8-inch display, providing me with ample space for all my apps and games, and it has a wonderfully bright display, so photos look stunning," he said. Chris concludes: "Whilst the Pixel 9 Pro XL may not boast the best battery life – for that, you'd be better off with the OnePlus 13 – it does offer an exceptional camera and a clean Android experience. Being the first to receive new Android features truly sets the Pixel apart from its competitors."

Glasgow-raised Nationwide and Greggs bosses among businesswomen honoured

Nationwide's chief executive has said she is 'hugely proud' of her Glasgow background as she becomes a dame, joining the Scottish boss of Greggs and a raft of businesswomen to be recognised in the King's Birthday Honours. Debbie Crosbie, the only woman to lead a 'big six' bank in the UK, has been given a damehood for her services to financial services. Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie and Sky's boss Dana Strong have also been honoured in this year's list. Dame Debbie told the PA news agency: 'I try to encourage people to think beyond 'I'm a female', but when it comes to this (honour) I am actually hugely proud. 'I grew up in Glasgow, I wasn't different to any of my peer group, so to be given the opportunity to lead… I've had a massively rewarding career. 'As a woman, I hope that sends a message of opportunity and hope, not just to young people.' Dame Debbie said she was particularly honoured to be recognised as not just the only woman to lead a major high street bank in the UK, but also as a Scot. 'Lots of people talk about me being a female but I think most of my peer group have come from a much higher social demographic and they tended to be educated in either Oxford or Cambridge,' she told PA. 'I think having that diverse social mobility as well as gender is really important – we do a lot of work at Nationwide to try and encourage people from backgrounds who wouldn't traditionally think of themselves as able to go into these types of jobs.' Dame Debbie has had a more than 30-year career in banking, climbing the ranks of Clydesdale Bank before becoming chief executive of TSB bank in 2019. Since taking the top job at Nationwide in 2022, she led the building society's £2.9 billion acquisition of Virgin Money, which has seen it become the UK's second largest mortgages and savings provider. But Dame Debbie also said some of the work she was most proud of involved Nationwide's free dementia clinics, with some 30,000 appointments in 200 of its branches over the past year. She said the clinics 'really touch people' and she had received numerous messages of thanks from families who had used the service. Meanwhile, Roisin Currie, a fellow Glaswegian and alumni of Strathclyde University, has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to hospitality. Ms Currie became the chief executive of Greggs in 2022 having joined the Newcastle-based bakery chain, popular for its sausage rolls, 12 years prior. Greggs has been growing rapidly across the UK and has set its sights on exceeding 3,000 shops, with Ms Currie overseeing the chain topping £2 billion in annual revenue for the first time last year. She spent nearly 20 years at Asda before joining Greggs as its people director in 2010. This year's King's Birthday Honours also recognises the group chief executive of Sky, Dana Strong, who has been made a CBE for her services to business and media. Ms Strong succeeded Jeremy Darroch, who led the broadcaster for more than a decade, when she took the top job in 2021 from her previous role as the president of one of Sky's owner Comcast's US businesses. The American businesswoman developed her telecoms career at Austar, which was a satellite subscription TV provider in regional Australia, before going on to hold executive positions at Virgin Media and Liberty Global. She has since overseen the launch of Sky Glass, the streaming TV that requires no satellite dish or box, and Sky Stream. Ms Strong said in a statement to PA that she was 'deeply humbled' by the honour, adding: 'It is a great privilege to serve in the UK's creative sector, and I am immensely proud of Sky's role in inspiring, enriching, and connecting lives across the country.' Other businesswoman to be honoured include the former chief executive of Microsoft UK, Clare Barclay, who has been made a dame for her services to business, technology and leadership. Dame Clare has been at Microsoft for more than 26 years, having joined as a sales and marketing manager, and now also chairs the Government's Industrial Strategy Advisory Council. Lyssa McGowan, the chief executive of Pets At Home, has been made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to retail.

Grab the MacBook Air with the M4 chip for £22 a month £899 £22 a month Sky GET DEAL Product Description Sky is handing out the newest MacBook Air from Sky for £22 a month with a £2 upfront cost. For Apple diehards, it might be a way to upgrade without needing to empty the bank Tech gurus at our sister paper, the Daily Express, reviewed the MacBook Air earlier in March, and it's safe to say they were thoroughly impressed, awarding it a full five stars. Tech editor David Snelling commented: "Just when you thought the MacBook Air couldn't get much better, another powerful update comes along. We were already huge fans of this highly portable PC, and now there are even more reasons to invest, thanks to the mighty M4 processor, improved external display compatibility, more RAM as standard and Centre Stage web camera." The M4 MacBook Air He continued praising the device, noting: "Battery life continues to impress, the screen is bright and colourful, and there are all the usual features you'd expect on a MacBook, such as a tactile keyboard, brilliant Force Touch trackpad and fast Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The new Sky Blue colour is surely going to be a huge hit and joins the Midnight, Starlight, and Silver shades." However, Snelling did acknowledge a drawback stating: "Yes, it's a bit of a shame that you only get two USB-C ports on one side of the device. Although it starts from a cheaper £999, it can get expensive if you start adding extras." Article continues below Summing up his thoughts, he claimed: "Otherwise, this is a brilliant upgrade to a device that was already at the top of its game. We probably wouldn't even recommend buying the M3 Air (even if you can find a deal) as the entry-level option only gets that 8GB of RAM - that's 50% less than the new £999 M4 machine." Wrapping up his thoughts, Snelling concluded emphatically: "We can honestly say there's no reason, barring the cost, that you shouldn't take the plunge and order the M4 Air today. It really is that good."
