Now, exactly a month later, on August 12, the filmmaker has officially rolled out the film for home audiences, sparking excitement but also leaving fans curious about the reason behind its early OTT release.
To address the speculation, James Gunn himself stepped forward to share the 'complicated" reasoning behind the decision.
James Gunn Explains Why Superman Gets an Early OTT Release
In an exclusive conversation with Screen Rant, Gunn revealed that the release timing of Superman was carefully aligned with his other DC project, Peacemaker. He explained, 'Well, it's very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month."
He added, 'There were a lot of things that were beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn't get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that's really the reason for it."
His clarification has only heightened anticipation as fans prepare for the crossover connections between the two titles.
What to Expect from Peacemaker Season 2
The upcoming second season of Peacemaker will continue the chaotic yet riveting journey of Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, following the events of Superman (2025). Peacemaker Season 2 Review: John Cena Makes A Darker, Bolder Return

Last Updated: With only a few days left before Peacemaker officially returns, critics have already had a chance to watch it early and can't stop praising John Cena's performance. When James Gunn first announced a series based on Peacemaker, many were unsure if the loud and childish member of the Suicide Squad could hold an entire show on his shoulders. But the first season turned out to be a wild and unexpected hit, filled with over the top action, humour and gore. The success set high hopes for the second season. With only a few days left before the show officially returns, critics have already had a chance to watch it early. The initial response has been mixed, but the majority are praising John Cena's performance, while also appreciating the show's bold R-rated comedy and intense action sequences. As per the official synopsis, 'In season 2, Peacemaker discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands." Critics Praise John Cena, Action and R-rated Humour: As per Games Radar's reviewer, 'Peacemaker's second season is darker and sadder than the first year, but there's still a lot of fun to be had with the 11th Street Kids. Fears that this might be a multiversal mess are assuaged by how smartly James Gunn uses its alternate timeline to turn the focus fully onto John Cena's tormented lead." Critics felt that the introduction of new characters in season 2 made the show more exciting and entertaining. At the same time, they also pointed out that a few existing characters don't get enough screen time, which makes them feel left out of the story. 'Unlike so many series that could invite new viewers week to week, this one absolutely requires immersion into its world. Season two doesn't dwell much on the past, inviting in many new characters and fully investing in them. This story is furiously interesting, and each new piece of the puzzle feels like it opens multiple new doors, all of which would be worth exploring in detail," as per Awards Buzz According to Roger Ebert, 'It seemed like Season 2 would follow the same tone as the first, Gunn has doubled down on the small moments that made this series stand out, crafting a second season that almost feels like an entirely different show. From this season's opening moments, there's an unmistakable shift that has taken place in the world of Peacemaker." Inverse mentioned that the second season of Peacemaker may feel a little confusing, but that is because it tries to create a fresh start for viewers. The idea is to make it easy for new fans to join the DC universe without knowing older stories. Season two works as an introduction and shows that the series belongs to the new DC setup and can even connect with someone who begins their journey right after watching Superman. 'Having indeed played Peacemaker as a fool in earlier shows, pro wrestler Cena nails this season's emotional and moral complexities with the aplomb of an Actors Studio graduate. That hangdog face, so purpose-built for looking stupid, now expresses longing, regret, determination and ever-so-tentative joy in subtle yet unerring ways," The Wrap As per Rolling Stones, 'John Cena's developed enough acting chops over the years that he can play this angle well, and make Chris into a genuinely sympathetic figure. But just as the later Guardians films lost a bit of their energy by making Star-Lord a primarily dramatic character, there are definitely stretches of this season that had me wishing Gunn would go back to giving Cena retrograde, infantile lines to deliver so that co-stars like Jennifer Holland and Danielle Brooks could roll their eyes at him." Peacemaker 2 Cast Other than John Cena, Peacemaker Season 2 features Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee and Robert Patrick. New faces include Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez and Tim Meadows. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Last Updated: In the scene, David Corenswet's Superman gives Lex Luthor a speech on his flaws and humanity. The film was released on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home on August 15, over a month after it premiered in theatres, and is available for rent and purchase. For those who are set to watch the film from the comfort of their homes, there is a special surprise. A new 60-minute documentary, titled Adventures in Making Superman, will give fans a glimpse into what went on behind the scenes of the blockbuster superhero film. To give a peek into what to expect from the special release, James Gunn, who is also the co-head of DC, posted a nearly seven-minute-long clip on his Instagram account on Friday. The clip featured the filming of the movie's emotional climax when Superman gives Lex Luthor a speech on his flaws and humanity. It opened with James and the crew alongside the lead actor, gearing up to shoot the scene. Initially, David was seen giving his speech, telling Lex, played by Nicholas Hoult, the exact things that were written in the script. But then, at one point, he explained to the director that he couldn't connect to the lines and wasn't feeling the exact intensity of the lines. James tried to explain the situation to him, but the actor remained unconvinced. That's when he decided to meet the director and have a one-on-one conversation. Despite being the writer and director of Superman, James was open to discussing the actor's perspective on the lines. David, at one point, also said that being in the theatre has taught him to question everything, which sometimes pisses people off. But that wasn't the case with James. James Gunn Shared That David Corenswet Is One Of His Favourite Actors He patiently listened to David and then explained what the situation and the emotional speech meant for Superman. After this explanation, the actor was convinced, and he shot the scene exactly as James wanted. In the video, the latter even said, 'I love David. One of my favourite actors I have worked with.
