Two dead as riots follow PSG's Champions League victory in Paris

Times2 days ago

Two people have died and almost 200 were injured as violence erupted across France after Paris Saint-Germain's victory over Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
Youths clashed with police in Paris and the provinces and at least 559 people were arrested, including 491 in the capital.
The unrest prompted a political row as critics on the left and the populist right turned on Bruno Retailleau, the interior minister.
In Paris, a man died near the Parc des Princes, PSG's stadium, when his scooter was hit by a car after the game in what appeared to be an accidental collision.
On the streets of the capital, drivers were revving engines, honking horns, weaving in and out of traffic and paying little attention to the rules of the road.
In Grenoble, a 46-year-old woman, her 17-year-old twins and her 23-year-old niece were injured after they were struck by a vehicle during celebrations. One of the twins is in a critical condition in hospital. The driver appeared to have lost control and there was no suggestion that the incident was deliberate, according to the French media.
In Normandy, a police officer was in an induced coma after being hit in the eye by a firework set off by people celebrating outside the cathedral in the town of Coutances.
Twenty-two officers were injured across the country, along with seven firefighters. The fire service said it had been called out to 692 blazes, of which 264 involved cars being set alight.

At one point, the fire service emergency number was receiving so many calls that operators were overwhelmed.
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Dax in the southwest of the country near a fan zone set up for the final. A murder inquiry has been launched. The public prosecutor's office said the killing occurred during the celebrations but was not necessarily connected to the football. It appeared to be an 'individual act without a link to the result', it said.
Julien Dubois, the town's mayor, called for the killer, who is on the run, to be found and 'severely punished'.
In Paris, the violence started before the game had ended when mobs attacked police and set fire to dustbins on the Champs-Élysées.
Tensions worsened after the final whistle, forcing police to use tear gas, stun grenades and water cannon to repel youths as the mood veered between euphoria and violence.
Shops were looted, including a Foot Locker store on the Champs-Élysées. Looters smashed the shopfront of the Chanel boutique before being chased away by two private security guards.
There were similar scenes near the Parc des Princes, where 48,000 fans watched the game on big screens. Violence erupted outside the ground as two vehicles were set alight and police fired tear gas and stun grenades. Supporters leaving the ground, including families with children, were caught in clouds of tear gas and forced to run as riot police charged in an attempt to restore order.
Retailleau said the violence was perpetrated by 'barbarians [who] have come to Paris to commit offences and to provoke the forces of law and order. It is intolerable that we can't imagine a celebration without fearing the savagery of a minority of hooligans who do not respect anything.'
His words provoked a political row and left-wingers denounced what they said were racist overtones. Thomas Portes, a France Unbowed MP, said: 'The word 'barbarian' has no place in the language of an interior minister. Bruno Retailleau has confirmed this evening that he is a racist interior minister.'

Manuel Bompard, the France Unbowed co-ordinator, accused Retailleau of 'fanning the flames of discord' instead of ensuring public order.
After PSG's semi-final win over Arsenal, which also led to violent scenes, Retailleau had been anticipating trouble for the final. He announced a 'massive' deployment of 5,400 police officers in the Paris region.
The populist right National Rally denounced the operation as a 'fiasco'. Jordan Bardella, the party chair, said the risks had been 'underestimated' and the police deployment 'undersized'. Bardella said Paris had been placed in the hands of 'rioters'.
Police were again deployed in large numbers on Sunday as PSG held a victory parade on the Champs-Élysées. In an attempt to avoid the sort of incident that marred the parade in Liverpool, adjoining roads were closed and the number of people allowed to access the Champs-Élysées was limited to 110,000.
President Macron denounced the violence as he greeted PSG players at the Élysée Palace on Sunday evening. 'Nothing can justify what has happened in the last few hours,' he said. 'These violent confrontations are unacceptable. We will pursue [the culprits], we will punish [them], we will be implacable,' he said.

Man Utd told to sack Amorim for unlikely move - 'Not trying to sensationalise'

Ruben Amorim endured a very difficult first season at Manchester United with Arsenal icon Martin Keown suggesting a surprise option to replace the Portuguese coach at Old Trafford Manchester United have sensationally been told to sack Ruben Amorim for Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp. Amorim endured a woeful first season at Old Trafford since replacing Erik ten Hag. He led the club to 15th in the Premier League - their worst finish of the modern era - while they also missed out on a spot in the Champions League after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham. That rotten form has left Amorim clinging on to his job. ‌ And former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes he has the perfect replacement already lined up: Klopp. Explaining the controversial move on talkSPORT, Keown said: 'I'm still concerned that maybe this isn't the right manager for Manchester United. ‌ 'Just look at the number of games they've lost. It's going to be a very interesting start to next season for them but they could do a lot worse than go and get Jurgen Klopp to manage their football club. 'I'm not trying to sensationalise. I believe he could do an incredible job there and I believe they need somebody with more experience than the current manager.' Asked to elaborate, he added: 'Why not? He's done a rebuilding job before [at Liverpool].' Amorim still has two years left to run on his original deal, with the option of a further season. It now appears very unlikely that he will be moved on. While the prospect of him being sacked looks unlikely, the prospect of Klopp moving to Old Trafford looks closer to impossible. The German is currently serving as Red Bull 's Head of Global Soccer and has hinted that he may never return to the dugout. Meanwhile, his ties to United's bitter rivals Liverpool make a move even more unlikely. That is despite Klopp having held talks over a switch to Old Trafford in the past. ‌ He previously revealed he turned down a move ahead of Sir Alex Ferguson 's retirement. Klopp said: "We spoke. We spoke not a lot but, for me, it was a lot. It was a big honour, the whole talk, to be honest. But I could not leave Dortmund. "You are in April and you are in the middle of the planning for next season. You have this player and this player who are coming but then you are not there anymore? That doesn't work. Not in my life. "I didn't hear about a real offer [from United] but, if there was, I could not have done it. I first had to finish the job with Dortmund and then think about other things. Maybe that is not smart but that is my way. It was the same at Mainz."

Kane vs Kiwis at Club World Cup, Man Utd in Asia and Bournemouth vs Everton in New Jersey… football must never rest

They had ended the 14-year quest of their Qatari overlords to win the Champions League, having inflicted on Inter Milan the most comprehensive humping in the history of European Cup finals. Almost immediately after their 5-0 win, Enrique and his stars would be peppered with questions about their prospects at the Club World Cup — a 32-team, month-long tournament designed to carpet-bomb TV schedules with even more football, starting on Sunday week. Does the Club World Cup now represent ultimate glory, rather than the Champions League? Is that, in the words of Finchy in The Office, 'the real quiz'? READ MORE IN FOOTBALL PENALTY BOXES Shamed ref David Coote filmed delivering Evri packages after cocaine video Because football — even in the odd-numbered summers which used to give us a brief respite from the thing — must never, ever rest. And so next week, PSG will go to America, where they will play the Urawa Red Diamonds, The Last Shadow Puppets and the Seattle Sounders — only one of which is really the name of an English band. And on Sunday week, Bayern Munich will play Auckland City in Cincinnati. And they WILL play. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK And there is nothing we can do to stop them playing. Even though we already know Bayern Munich are significantly better than Auckland City. And Harry Kane will play. Even though his body is creaking. Chelsea finally discover Club World Cup opponents as former star, 38, assists dramatic winner to set up reunion Even though he hasn't had a proper rest in years. Even though he surely can't think of anything worse than having to play Auckland City. Because Fifa are offering $1BILLION in prize money. And two days later, you can watch in HD as Ulsan HD of South Korea play Mamelodi Sundowns, who are possibly an indie band who have an afternoon slot on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage, or might be a football team from Pretoria in South Africa Because in football there must be no sundown. Only the Mamelodi Sundowns. And Manchester City and Chelsea will be there too, due to some convoluted Uefa qualification system which it's best not to ask about. And Inter Miami will be there — not because of any system but because they employ Lionel Messi, who turns 38 this month and must be tired but must never, ever rest. And the whole thing will go on for every bit as long as an actual World Cup, with countries, used to go on for. 10 The Club World Cup is set to commence on Sunday week Credit: AFP 10 Lionel Messi will play in the revamped tournament Credit: Getty Although not as long as next year's actual World Cup, which will have 48 nations and 104 matches in it and will go on for even longer. Oh and there will still be a third-place play-off. Because what else would we do with ourselves on Saturday July 18, 2026, if we couldn't watch another game of football between two utterly deflated, exhausted teams? Manchester United didn't qualify for the Club World Cup. But that doesn't matter because, after the worst season in their modern history, United's players travelled 14,000 miles to play post-season friendlies in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong so that the club could fulfil £10million worth of sponsorship commitments. And yes 'net zero' is supposed to be an environmental policy rather than United's goalscoring output against the ASEAN All-Stars. During the half-time interval of that 1-0 defeat in Malaysia, Andre Onana, Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot were substituted so they could board a private jet to Mumbai to promote Apollo tyres. Because people in Mumbai will choose Apollo tyres if an error-prone Cameroonian goalkeeper tells them to. And Michelin and Bridgestone and Pirelli won't get a look in, just so long as Dalot presses home Apollo's core messages, which are 'Going The Distance' and 'Conquer Every Road'. 10 Man Utd played two post-season friendlies in Asia Credit: AP 10 Harry Kane seemingly never gets a summer off Credit: AP While Maguire was flying to India, to tell people that 'the journey is as important as the destination', Amad Diallo was still in Malaysia, where he was giving the middle finger to a fan who had apparently abused his mother. And then issuing a social-media apology, in which he said he didn't actually regret giving the finger. Because it isn't enough that Amad's mother is abused during the football season. She needs to be abused during the close season as well. And her son needs to retaliate. Because there needs to be online content and, if the internet never sleeps, then why should football sleep, along with its content-creating by-product, the abuse of really tired footballers? Last year, Tottenham and Newcastle made a 21,000-mile round trip to Melbourne to play each other, six weeks after they had previously done so. And the Toon won on penalties. But is that really enough, when these footballers travelled in first-class luxury and stayed in excellent hotels? The BBC's Race Across The World is an extraordinarily successful TV show because contestants must travel on overnight buses and then muck out animals to raise extra cash. 10 Man Utd lifted the Defining Education Challenge Cup after beating Hong Kong Credit: Getty 10 Tottenham played Newcastle in Melbourne in May 2024 Credit: Getty Why shouldn't footballers do the same on post-season and pre-season tours? Wouldn't that provide better content? This Saturday, England will play a competitive match against Andorra, which won't be competitive. And next Tuesday, England will play Senegal, when they won't really be England because so many of their players will be heading to the Club World Cup. But it's not as if we'd have to wait long for football without this new thing. Next month, there will be a North London Derby in Hong Kong and Bournemouth will play Everton at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the venue for next summer's World Cup final. Because why wouldn't we want to watch Bournemouth play Everton in July — even if, when the fixtures come out in a fortnight, we might find out that they are playing each other in August? The thing is, Bournemouth versus Everton has been far too parochial until now. When Bournemouth are at home, only 11,000 people get in to watch it. What about the blue-collar workers of New Jersey, the people Bruce Springsteen writes ballads about? Don't they deserve their fix of Bournemouth versus Everton, instead of just shotgun, teenage weddings and dreaming about escaping from small towns on motorbikes, kind of stuff? And the answer is, yes, they do deserve Bournemouth versus Everton. Just like you deserve Red Bull Salzburg, the second best team in Austria, versus CF Pachuca, the eighth best team in Mexico. That one's on Wednesday June 18 at 11pm. Followed by Al-Ain versus Juventus at 2am. Eyes down, look in. We'll sleep when we're dead. 10 Fans in the US will be able to get a glimpse of James Tarkowski Credit: Getty
