Minister Muthusamy refutes allegations over distribution of free dhotis and saris for Pongal

Minister for Housing, Prohibition and Excise, S. Muthusamy, on Thursday (August 7, 2025) asserted that the DMK government is distributing better-quality free dhotis and sarees for the Pongal festival compared to the previous government.
Addressing the media at the Collectorate after inaugurating an exhibition organised to mark National Handloom Day, the Minister refuted allegations made by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who claimed that free dhotis and sarees were not being distributed properly. 'Compared to the previous government, the current government is providing better-quality free dhotis and sarees in an organised manner,' Mr. Muthusamy said.
When asked about Mr. Palaniswami's statement that the AIADMK would distribute free silk sarees for Deepavali if voted to power, the Minister responded, 'Why didn't they distribute silk sarees during their 10-year rule?'
He further stated that when Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a financial assistance of ₹1,000 under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, Mr. Palaniswami dismissed it as a temporary, publicity-driven initiative. 'However, 1.15 crore women are continuously receiving the assistance, and applications from eligible women were accepted through the Ungaludan Stalin special camps being held across the State,' Mr. Muthusamy said. He added that these camps were organised to resolve long-pending grievances and emphasised that the DMK government is performing far better than the previous administration.
Regarding the Athikadavu–Avinashi project, the Minister said that out of 1,045 water bodies, water is yet to reach 219 due to minor issues in some of the 86 feeder lines. While the main pipeline is functioning without problems, a few damaged feeder lines are resulting in soil sedimentation—especially since water is drawn only for 70 days a year, leaving the pipelines idle for the remaining days. 'The contractor, Larsen and Toubro, has been instructed to resolve these issues immediately,' he said.
District Collector S. Kandasamy, MLA V.C. Chandhirakumar, Mayor S. Nagarathinam, and other officials were present at the event.

Thol Thirumavalavan will disappear from politics if he criticises MGR: EPS

SALEM: general secretary on Saturday said VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan will disappear from the political landscape if he continues to criticise late Tamil Nadu chief minister M G Ramachandran (MGR). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now EPS was reacting to Thirumavalavan's remark at a function in Chennai on Friday that MGR had played a role in bringing Brahminism to the Dravidian movement. "MGR enabled a Brahmin woman ( ) to ascend to the leadership of the Dravidian movement," Thirumavalavan had stated. Palaniswami said Thirumavalavan lacked the credentials to discuss MGR. "MGR is revered as a god by the people of Tamil Nadu. Criticizing someone of that stature will lead to their political disappearance," he said responding to a question by reporters in Salem. EPS emphasized that it was unfeasible to engage in politics based solely on one caste. 'The AIADMK remains a party that transcends caste and religion. Our movement has numerous caste associations and individuals from various religions," he said. "Those who cannot accept this are expressing their anger and hatred through such remarks," he added. It may be noted that Thirumavalavan had also said in the same speech in Chennai that no national party could form a govt in the state after MGR floated a new party (AIADMK). 'More importantly, the BJP could not gain foothold in the state,' he had said.

Former presidium chairman of MDMK issues legal notice against party general secretary Vaiko on ‘slander' charge

General secretary of Coimbatore and Periyar districts of Dravida Panjalai Thozhilalar Munnetra Sangam S. Doraisamy (90), who had resigned from the post of MDMK presidium chairman during 2023, on Saturday, served a legal notice on party general secretary Vaiko demanding an unconditional apology or ₹1 crore in compensation for indulging in 'slander' against the former by charging him with appropriating properties of the DMK worth ₹350 crore. Mr. Vaiko, with a deliberate intent of 'maligning' the name of Mr. Doraisamy had, on July 17, told mediapersons at a meeting of regional-level office-bearers at Villupuram that the latter had appropriated the DMK properties, by attaching them to a trust in his name. 'Even the DMK would accept that the statement was a blatant lie,' Mr. Doraisamy said. The notice states that the 'slander' had caused disrepute to Mr. Doraisamy, who, as the duly elected general secretary of the Sangam (Registration no. 2658/ 1959) since 1960, had been rendering service to the working class and to the general public as a politician. The Sangam to which election is conducted once in two years was an individual entity with its own by-laws on handling of properties purchased with the contributions of its members. Through adopting resolutions, the Sangam had supported the DMK till 1993, and thereafter, the MDMK after Mr. Vaiko was expelled from the DMK for raising his voice against dynastic politics. Mr. Doraisamy, in the legal notice reminded Mr. Vaiko of his appreciation of the former, during 2021, for having safeguarded the Sangam properties from the DMK since 1993, by winning the cases till the level of Supreme Court. The statement of appreciation by Mr. Vaiko was published in the MDMK publication Sangoli in August 27, 2021. On May 29, 2023, Mr. Doraisamy resigned from the post of MDMK presidium chairman, to which he was elected in 2010, and relinquished primary membership of the party in protest against the dynastic politics. Against this backdrop, the 'defamatory' statement by Mr. Vaiko had caused humiliation to Mr. Doraisamy, and it amounted to offence under BNNS 356 (1), the notice said. 'Either render an unconditional apology within 15 days of the receipt of the legal notice or pay ₹1 crore as compensation for the slander, through cheque or demand draft to the Sangam,' the notice said, adding: 'else, legal proceedings will follow, at your expense.'

People criticising MGR will disappear from politics, says Edappadi K. Palaniswami

Former Chief Minister and general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday, August 9, 2025, said people criticising former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) will disappear from politics.. Mr. Palaniswami participated in a function at Omalur in which cadres from various political parties joined AIADMK. Responding to a question from mediapersons on Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan's comment on MGR that he paved the way for Jayalalithaa to become leader of a Dravidian party, Mr. Palaniswami said people saw MGR as god. Those criticising MGR would disappear from politics. 'AIADMK has people from all caste and religion and they stand united,' Mr. Palaniswami added. Regarding the contradictory statements made by left parties and DMK after meeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently on a separate law for honour killings, Mr. Palaniswami said that this showed the problem within the DMK alliance. 'It is unclear whether the DMK alliance will continue for the next eight months or not. As far as AIADMK is concerned, there are eight more months for the elections and a strong alliance will be formed,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami denied to comment on PMK general council meeting, about former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam quitting BJP alliance and bringing former AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala into AIADMK fold. Earlier, speaking among the cadre, Mr. Palaniswami said that people should compare Salem district before 2011 and after that. During the AIADMK regime, between 2011 and 2021, the district got roads, check dams, and many other infrastructure. The handlooms and power looms did good business. He claimed that weavers were sustaining severe losses under the DMK regime. After AIADMK comes to power, tree climbers will be covered under insurance, and the premium will be paid by the government. They will also be given equipment for tree climbing free of cost, he said. He criticised the DMK government for not completing the remaining 25% of the 100-lake scheme works that was brought in by the AIADMK. After AIADMK comes to power, this scheme work will be completed, and farmers will get water for irrigation. Likewise, Scheduled Castes and poor people who live in huts will be given concrete houses. If they do not have lands, the government will buy land and construct houses for them. For the 2026 Assembly elections, AIADMK will come out with an election manifesto that will make people happy, he added.
