The Minister underscored the need to uphold democratic ideals rooted in compassion, inclusion, and the integration of marginalised communities into the mainstream. 'Our times demand uncompromising action to bring the excluded into leadership positions and ensure that the vision of an inclusive democracy is truly fulfilled,' she said.
Cultural diversity
Recalling the centuries-long British colonial rule that stripped the nation of freedom and dignity, Dr. Bindu emphasised the resilience of India's cultural diversity in overcoming oppression. She pointed out that after Independence, leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru took on the responsibility of empowering the oppressed — Dalits, Adivasis, minorities, and persons with disabilities — ensuring equality and participation for all.
She urged the people to work hand-in-hand, leading the country with vibrancy, and to prepare future generations capable of resisting forces that seek to pull the nation backward. 'Passing on the flag of a free India to the next generation is an inescapable responsibility we must fulfil with precision,' she affirmed.
The ceremony was attended by Mayor M.K. Varghese, district panchayat president V.S. Prince, vice-president Latha Chandran, District Collector Arjun Pandian, City Police Chief R. Ilango, Rural Police Chief B. Krishnakumar, among others.
A total of 26 platoons — including police, excise, forest, SPC, and NCC—participated in the parade led by Guruvayur Temple Police Inspector G. Ajayakumar. Awards were presented to the best-performing platoons. The event concluded with the national anthem, marking the close of a fully eco-friendly Independence Day celebration.

Kakinada: Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Thursday called upon citizens to stand united to thwart both external and internal forces seeking to destabilise the nation, thereby safeguarding democracy and national integrity. Participating as chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Police Parade Ground here, the Deputy CM — who holds the panchayat raj, rural development, rural water supply, environment, forests, and science and technology portfolios — hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour from the police and NCC contingents. In his address, Pawan said India's freedom was won through immense sacrifices, and that Independence Day should be celebrated not as a ritual, but with a sense of responsibility to protect the nation. Stable law and order, he stressed, was crucial for attracting investments and ensuring overall development. Under the Thalliki Vandanam programme, Rs 8,745 crore had been deposited into the accounts of 67.27 lakh mothers, while one crore gas cylinders had been distributed under the Deepam scheme in two phases. Over the next five years, the scheme will provide three free cylinders annually, costing Rs 13,427 crore. Pawan announced a sharp hike in funds for national festival celebrations in panchayats — from Rs 100 to Rs 10,000 for minor panchayats and from Rs 250 to Rs 25,000 for major panchayats — enhancing the role and dignity of sarpanches. He lauded the state's achievement of holding village assemblies simultaneously in all 13,326 panchayats, advancing the goal of 'village self-rule.' To boost forest cover from 30 per cent to 37 per cent, one crore saplings have been planted and are being tracked through QR codes. He also cited the resolution of elephant attack issues by deploying 'kunki' elephants from Karnataka, and the launch of 61 tourism projects in Araku with a budget of Rs 1,022 crore. On his Pithapuram constituency, he said Rs 308 crore had already been spent on development works to transform it into a model constituency, with more projects planned over the next four years. The event featured police and departmental floats, cultural performances by school students, and the presentation of awards to officials, staff, and volunteers. Pawan also laid the foundation stone for the Rs 6-crore Red Cross Cancer Block at Kakinada Government General Hospital, funded through CSR contributions. The celebrations were attended by Deputy CM's wife Anna Lezhneva, senior officials, legislators, and public representatives from across the district.

TTD to carry out extensive propagation of Sanatana Dharma
Tirupati: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated with grandeur at the Parade Grounds in the TTD Administrative Building here on Friday. TTD chairman B R Naidu, along with executive officer J Syamala Rao, hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour from the security personnel. In his address, the chairman announced that the TTD will conduct extensive programmes for the propagation of Sanatana Dharma with the participation of the public. He recalled the sacrifices of freedom fighters and expressed confidence that India would soon emerge as the world's third-largest economy. He said, following the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, several new initiatives have been taken up, including implementation of AI technology for faster and more convenient darshan, improved quality and distribution of Annadanam with special counters in crowded areas, and annadanam with milk every three hours at the Vaikuntham Queue Complex. Vada has been introduced at Tarigonda Vengamamba Annadanam Bhavan from March, and a new SRIVANI ticket counter provides same-day evening darshan for tickets issued in the morning. Other measures include modernisation of Kalyanakatta, 110 per cent increase in Tirumala greenery, an anti-drone security system, a new quality-testing lab, phased development of sub-temples, construction of temples in various states and UTs, increased grants for temples in Dalit, tribal, and fisher communities, and strengthening of Srivari Seva with professional and NRI volunteers. EO Syamala Rao, extending I-Day greetings, said efforts are being made to ensure comfortable darshan for pilgrims from across the country and abroad, and lauded officials and staff for their services. Outlining initiatives, he said daily rituals are being performed strictly as per Agama Shastra, preparations are underway for the annual Salakatla Brahmotsavam from September 24 to October 2, and transparency in room allotment has been enhanced. A new PAC-5 complex to accommodate 10,000 pilgrims will open soon. The SV Museum is being redeveloped with Rs 145 crore donor funds, featuring 3D/7D experiences, tradition galleries, and vehicle services. Annadanam will be continued at Vontimitta temple, the Alipiri check post is being modernised, and a Cyber Security Lab will be established. Projects include an Integrated Administrative Building in Tirumala, new premium and budget waiting halls, 120 additional free APSRTC bus trips daily, upgradation of SVIMS with an Rs.80 crore additional grant, and wage hikes for Potu workers. He urged staff to maintain their enthusiasm and team spirit in serving devotees.

Importance of education stressed
Vijayawada: StateLegislative Council chairman Koyye Moshen Raju stressed the need for universal education to bridge economic inequalities in society. Participating as the chief guest in the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the State Assembly building on Friday, he first paid floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and unfurled the tricolour. Extending his greetings to the people on the occasion, Moshen Raju observed that even after 79 years of independence, economic disparities persist because not everyone has access to quality education and medical care. He said it is the government's responsibility to ensure that these services reach every citizen. 'Only through education can people become aware of their rights and work towards achieving them, paving the way for economic progress,' he noted. Emphasising India's unity in diversity, the Chairman said all citizens are equal and should be given equal opportunities, irrespective of caste, religion, or region. He urged governments to take concrete steps to implement welfare schemes effectively and prioritise educational and healthcare services, especially for the poor and weaker sections. Assembly secretary general Prasanna Kumar Suryadevara, deputy secretaries, officers, and staff also took part in the programme.
