Bitcoisn crossed the $120,000 for the first time on Monday, marking a new milestone for the world's largest cryptocurrency as investors bet on long-sought policy wins for the industry this week.
Bitcoin scaled a record high of $123,153.22 before pulling back slightly to trade 2.4% higher around $122,000.
Later in the day, the U.S. House of Representatives will debate a series of bills to provide the digital asset industry with the nation's regulatory framework it has long
demanded.
Those demands have resonated with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has called himself the 'crypto president' and urged policymakers to revamp rules in favor of the industry.
'It's riding a number of tailwinds at the moment,' said IG market analyst Tony Sycamore, citing strong institutional demand, expectations of further gains and support from Trump as reasons for the bullishness.
'It's been a very, very, strong move over the past six or seven days and it's hard to see where it stops now. It looks like it can easily have a look at the $125,000 level,' he said.
The surge in bitcoin, which is up 30% for the year so far, has sparked a broader rally across other cryptocurrencies over the past few sessions, even in the face of Trump's chaotic tariffs.
Ether, the second-largest token, scaled a more than five-month high of $3,059.60, while XRP and Solana gained about 3% each.
The sector's total market value has swelled to about $3.81 trillion, according to data from CoinMarketCap.
'What we find interesting and are watching closely are the signs that bitcoin is now being seen as a long-term reserve asset, not just by retail investors and institutions but even some central banks,' said Gracie Lin, OKX's Singapore CEO.
'We're also seeing increasing participation from Asia-based investors, including family offices and wealth managers. These are strong signs of bitcoin's role in the global financial system and the structural shift in how it is perceived, suggesting that this isn't just another hype-driven rally.' Earlier this month, Washington declared the week of July 14 as 'Crypto Week,' during which members of Congress are set to vote on the Genius Act, the Clarity Act, and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act.
The most significant bill is the 'Genius Act,' which would create federal rules for stablecoins.
Elsewhere, prices of crypto stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) advanced.
In U.S. premarket trading, shares of crypto exchange Coinbase surged 1.7%, while bitcoin holder Strategy climbed 3.3%. Crypto miner Mara Holdings jumped 4.6%.
Hong Kong-listed spot bitcoin ETFs launched by China AMC, Harvest and Bosera all hit record highs.

Nvidia's CEO says it gained US approval to sell H20 AI chips to China

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says the technology giant has won approval from United States President Donald Trump's administration to sell its advanced H20 computer chips, used to develop artificial intelligence, to China. The news came in a company blog post late on Monday, and Huang also spoke about the coup on China's state-run CGTN television network in remarks shown on X. 'The US government has assured Nvidia that licences will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon,' the post said. 'Today, I'm announcing that the US government has approved for us filing licences to start shipping H20s,' Huang told reporters in Beijing. He noted that half of the world's AI researchers are in China. 'It's so innovative and dynamic here in China that it's really important that American companies are able to compete and serve the market here in China,' he said. Huang recently met with Trump and other US policymakers, and this week, he is in Beijing to attend a supply chain conference and speak with Chinese officials. The broadcast showed Huang meeting with Ren Hongbin, the head of the China Council for Promotion of International Trade, which is hosting the China International Supply Chain Expo, which Huang was attending. Nvidia is an exhibitor. Nvidia has profited enormously from rapid adoption of AI and last week became the first company to have its market value surpass $4 trillion. However, the trade rivalry between the US and China has been weighing heavily on the industry. Washington has been tightening controls on exports of advanced technology to China for years, citing concerns that know-how meant for civilian use could be deployed for military purposes. The emergence of China's DeepSeek AI chatbot in January renewed concerns over how China might use the advanced chips to help develop its own AI capabilities. In January before Trump began his second term in office, the administration of US President Joe Biden launched a new framework for exporting advanced computer chips used to develop artificial intelligence, an attempt to balance national security concerns about the technology with the economic interests of producers and other countries. The White House announced in April that it would restrict sales of Nvidia's H20 chips and AMD's MI308 chips to China. Nvidia had said the tighter export controls would cost the company an extra $5.5bn, and Huang and other technology leaders have been lobbying Trump to reverse the restrictions. They have argued that such limits hinder US competition in a leading edge sector in one of the world's largest markets for technology. They have also warned that US export controls could end up pushing other countries towards China's AI technology. Nvidia's US-traded shares slipped 0.5 percent in after-hours trading on Monday, but its shares traded in Frankfurt, Germany, jumped 3.2 percent early on Tuesday.

Trump slaps 17 percent tariff on tomatoes from Mexico

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has announced that it will impose a 17 percent tariff on fresh tomatoes from Mexico, scrapping a three-decade-old agreement to spare the produce from anti-dumping duties. Trump's withdrawal from the agreement to suspend anti-dumping measures on Monday came as the clock ticked down for Mexico to reach a comprehensive trade deal with the US by August 1 or face a general tariff of 30 percent on its goods. 'Mexico remains one of our greatest allies, but for far too long, our farmers have been crushed by unfair trade practices that undercut pricing on produce like tomatoes,' US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said in a statement. 'That ends today. This rule change is in line with President Trump's trade policies and approach with Mexico.' The Commerce Department had in April announced its intention to exit the agreement in 90 days, saying it had 'failed to protect U.S. tomato growers from unfairly priced Mexican imports'. Mexico supplies nearly 70 percent of tomatoes in the US, up from about 20 percent in 1994, according to the Florida Tomato Exchange. The Tomato Suspension Agreement, which was first signed in 1996, put a hold on duties stemming from a US trade court decision that found Mexican exporters were selling their produce at artificially low prices. Under the agreement, the US agreed to suspend the tariffs provided that Mexican producers did not sell their produce below agreed-upon 'reference prices.' The two sides renewed the deal on four occasions, most recently in 2019. In a joint statement, Mexico's economy and agriculture ministries condemned the move as 'unjust' and 'against the interests not only of Mexican producers but also of the US industry'. 'The gains made by Mexican fresh tomatoes in the U.S. market are due to the quality of the product and not to any unfair practices,' the ministries said, adding that the tariffs would 'only hurt American consumers' wallets, as it will be impossible to replace Mexican tomatoes.'
