‘Yours, Margot,' by ‘Compartment No. 6' Director Juho Kuosmanen, Boarded by Elisa Viihde (EXCLUSIVE)
Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen – awarded the Grand Prix at Cannes for 'Compartment No. 6' – has joined forces with Finland's Elisa Viihde on upcoming six-episode series 'Yours, Margot.' Elisa Viihde is an entertainment service of Elisa, which has been commissioning original drama series since 2014.
'The project has been in stand-by mode and I'm happy to see it proceed with Elisa. We are still writing, because the script is crucial – even more in TV than in cinema,' he told Variety.

'We are not interested in making a TV series; we are interested in making a good TV series. And that takes time.'
What makes a good TV series? 'A good script and a great ensemble. And a brilliant location scout,' he added. Previously, Kuosmanen directed series 'Zone B' and 'Alice & Jack,' the latter starring Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson. He also served as the show's executive producer.
'Yours, Margot,' based on a novel by Meri Valkama, zooms in on Vilja, who spent her childhood in East Berlin. After the death of her father, a foreign correspondent, she finds old letters from the mysterious 'Margot,' uncovering her family's traumatic past in the 1980s. Now a journalist herself, she decides to find Margot – and finally get some answers.
'We've been doing the adaptation for quite some time now. Adapting is never as simple as you first think. You cannot just 'write' the book into images and dialogue. You really have to discover what touched you in the original material, what took you in and what emotions and themes were the most important to you. And then you have to build on that,' explained producer Jussi Rantamäki of Aamu Film Company.
'Juho is very demanding when it comes to scripts, especially regarding the tone of the story. Andris Feldmanis and Livia Ulman [also behind 'Compartment No. 6'] wrote quite a lot of versions until we were all happy. Now, we developed a great pilot and bible together with Beta Film.'
In 2023, the show was already adjudicated one of the Seriesmakers' Beta Development Awards and €50,000 ($54,000). The initiative, then in its first edition, is led by SeriesMania and supported by Beta.
'It was a great start for the project. We realized that others see great potential in the team and the story. We were very early in development and the prize and partnering with Beta Film, pushed us further,' recalled Rantamäki, ready to 'start international financing.'
'We think the series really suits [Elisa's] editorial line and we have been working on the development with them from the very early stages.'
Sari Lempiäinen, executive producer at Elisa Viihde, noted: 'We are proud to have this series as part of our original series slate and to start working with Juho and Jussi.'
According to Ani Korpela, Elisa's chief content officer, the show 'perfectly encapsulates what Elisa Viihde strives for in its original series: bold, high-quality European drama with a distinct creative vision and international appeal.'
'With 'Yours, Margot', everything came together in such an organic way. Juho Kuosmanen saw in Meri Valkama's novel the kind of layered, deeply personal story that needed a larger canvas,'
'The project is also a great example of our approach to international co-productions: since much of the story is set in Berlin, it is natural to seek German partners. Beyond that, its themes are universally relevant, which is why we believe it will speak to audiences far beyond Finland.'
Ferdinand Dohna, Head of Content & Co-Production at Beta Film, called the new partnership a 'milestone' for the series.
'It's great to see that the creative initiative that is Seriesmakers serves its purpose: fostering creativity and nurturing global talent eager to dive deep into television storytelling. With the support of outstanding partners, mentors and speakers, we're proud to accompany 'Yours, Margot' and unveil its cinematic approach to a global audience.'

Sabrina Carpenter gets cheeky as she announces new album, ‘Man's Best Friend'
Sabrina Carpenter sure has been a 'Busy Woman.' Just a year after releasing 'Short n' Sweet,' the 'Espresso' singer has another album on the way. Carpenter took to Instagram Wednesday morning to announce 'Man's Best Friend,' due Aug. 29, along with its sultry (and divisive) cover art featuring the singer on all fours in front of a man pulling her hair. She also posted a close-up image of a dog whose collar is emblazoned with the album title, highlighting the cheeky play on words. Carpenter gave fans a taste of the new project last week with 'Manchild,' a twangy synth-pop track that sees the singer questioning, 'Why so sexy if so dumb? / And how survive the Earth so long?' Written with Amy Allen and Jack Antonoff shortly after finishing 'Short n' Sweet,' the single has been compared to her songs '15 Minutes' and 'Busy Woman,' released earlier this year. 'It sounds like the song embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer,' Carpenter said of 'Manchild' on Instagram. 'Hence why i wanted to give it to you now- so you can stick your head out the car window and scream it all summer long!' 'Manchild' is accompanied by a playful music video that shows the singer hitchhiking with various incompetent men and bathing with pigs in her bra and underwear. Fans have also been quick to point out that the dog in the video may be the same as the one in the album announcement. While not much else is known about the album, Carpenter sifted through ABBA, Donna Summer and Dolly Parton records during an Instagram Live Wednesday morning, hinting at her possible influences, according to Variety. The singer notably covered the Weather Girls' '80s hit 'It's Raining Men' during her headlining set at Primavera Sound Barcelona last weekend, where she also performed 'Manchild' live for the first time. This fall, Carpenter is set to return to North America for another leg of her Short n' Sweet Tour, finishing with six nights at Los Angeles' Arena on Nov. 16, 17, 19, 20, 22 and 23. Perhaps fans can expect some new additions to the setlist.

Emmy experts analyze Limited Series race: Why ‘Adolescence' is ‘the one to beat' as voting begins
Is the Best Limited Series Emmy race over before it's even begun? With voting beginning Thursday, four top Emmy experts — Variety's Clayton Davis, The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg, Indiewire's Marcus Jones, Deadline's Pete Hammond — predict the race with moderator and Gold Derby editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum in our latest slugfest (watch above). "I can start and end with Adolescence," Hammond declares as the others laugh in agreement. "The race here we're going to talk about is for nominees two, three, four, and five. But I think [the eventual winner is] Adolescence for every reason you can imagine: its global reach, what it's talking about, the extraordinary acting, directing, writing. Everything about this is once in a generation. This thing is taking off and it isn't going to stop at nominations. This is the one to beat." More from GoldDerby Making of 'Mid-Century Modern': How comedy legends created Hulu's freshest sitcom starring Nathan Lane and the late Linda Lavin Parker Posey reveals 'The White Lotus' fans are making sure she's living a comfortable life Animal skins, clothes-swapping, and those terrifying masks: How 'Yellowjackets' costume designer works with Liv Hewson and cast Feinberg notes how it's actually "twice in a generation" because something similar happened last year with Baby Reindeer, which also aired on Netflix. He then singles out Monsters for "the whole conversation" it created throughout the country. "Whether you like it or not — and I'm annoyed by how much I think it's ridiculous talking about paroling the Menendez brothers — it's in the news every day." Birnbaum mentions how Adolescence was a "binge drop" on Netflix that "nobody knew anything about," and then "built momentum" to become a global phenomenon. She notes, "And again, going back to my point about voters watching the thing that they know they have to talk about, this is it." HBO Davis refers to The Penguin as "the one to beat before Adolescence showed up," adding, "But here's the thing: I maybe would have been a little hesitant, because genre superhero doesn't do that well at Emmys. Ask WandaVision [and its stars] Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, and Kathryn Hahn, who went home empty-handed. They just don't typically go for genre superhero stuff, but I think it's undoubtedly going to get in." The pundits name-drop more limited series in the running for a nomination, including Dying for Sex, Zero Day, Black Mirror, Sirens, Apple Cider Vinegar, Disclaimer, Presumed Innocent, Dope Thief, Long Bright River, and Say Nothing. And TV movies up for some Emmy love include Rebel Ridge, Mountainhead, and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy. "I think we're bringing up a lot of shows that we're going to see represented in the acting categories," Jones says. "Say Nothing is that prestige pick that has picked up the Scripter and the Peabody, etc. I do think it's on people's radar, but is not probably going to get acting nominations, and so people can take all that passion toward making sure the show is nominated."
