Himachal Chief Minister Unfurls 108-Feet Flag At Jakhu Hanuman Temple
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday unfurled a 108-feet-tall religious flag (pataka) at the historic Jakhu Hanuman Temple in Shimla. The Chief Minister called the installation a mark of deep-rooted devotion and Himachali tradition, while also reiterating that the state government is accelerating relief and rehabilitation efforts in the wake of recent monsoon devastation.
He once again urged the Union Government to provide a special relief package for the disaster-hit state.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Chief Minister Sukhu said that, keeping in mind the environmental aspect, the government would beautify the temple and install a large statue of Lord Ram after obtaining Forest clearance.
"Jakhu Temple has historic significance. It already houses the world's tallest statue of Lord Hanuman, and now, with this 108-feet-tall flag, perhaps the tallest of its kind, we have once again shown our devotion. This symbolizes our faith, culture, and traditions. We, the people of Himachal, are the living expression of that faith," he said.
Senior priest of the Jakhu Temple, B.P. Sharma, highlighted the spiritual significance of the event. Sharma said, "On the auspicious occasion of Ashtami in the holy month of Shravan, the flag was hoisted". He added, "This flag is taller than the statue itself and can be seen from far and wide. On regular days, we see 20,000 to 25,000 devotees visit daily, although numbers are lower now due to the rains. There is also discussion about installing a large idol of Lord Ram, but a survey will be conducted first to ensure the mountain's stability before any decision is made".
The Chief Minister also revealed that plans are underway to install a grand statue of Lord Ram near the temple, but the project is currently held up due to forest clearance issues.
"I have given directions to explore the possibility of installing a large idol of Lord Ram here. However, due to forest restrictions, we will need clearance. While that process is underway, we will immediately work on beautifying the temple premises. A blueprint will be prepared to improve parking and seating facilities. The work will be done in a way that protects the environment and upholds the spiritual sanctity of this sacred place," he added.
When asked about the ongoing monsoon devastation, CM Sukhu asserted that his government is working at full speed to restore normalcy. "I want to clarify that there has been no lapse in our restoration and relief work. We are even coordinating with former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur since his constituency has suffered extensive damage," Sukhu said.
"I have briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman about the scale of destruction in Siraj, Karsog, Dharampur and other areas. Rising above party politics, I have requested a special relief package for Himachal," he emphasized.
He expressed hope that the Union Home Minister would announce concrete assistance during his upcoming visit to the state.
"The rehabilitation work is progressing rapidly. There is no dearth of food or supplies. People are also generously donating. The state government takes full responsibility for families who have suffered losses. While we cannot allot new land, wherever government land is available (except forest land), we will ensure plots are given to disaster-affected families," Chief Minister Sukhu said.
He also highlighted a Rs 5,000 monthly rent assistance scheme for displaced families. "People whose homes have been destroyed and who are currently staying in government rest houses can shift to rented accommodation. If they provide written proof to the local patwari, they will receive Rs 5,000 per month towards rent," he added.
"Our main aim is to ensure that roads remain open and that horticultural produce reaches the markets without delay. Instructions are being issued for the speedy clearance of roads and transport routes," he said.

Nashik civic body's city bus service records highest-ever daily income of ₹44 lakh in ticket sales
The Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd, the transport wing of the Nashik Municipal Corporation , recorded an income of ₹ 44 lakh on Aug 12 (Monday) through the sale of tickets, marking the highest daily income since operations began in July 2021. Over 1.1 lakh passengers travelled by city buses on Aug 12, which was the third Monday of the Shravan month . The previous highest daily earning was ₹ 35.4 lakh, recorded on Sept 4, 2023, during the Shravan month that year. The third Shravan Somwar is a major event that attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees to Trimbakeshwar, home to one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas. Pilgrims from across the country visit the temple and take a holy dip in the Kushawarta kund. "We deployed more buses on the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar route on the occasion of the third Shravan Somwar on Aug 12, and all the buses that ran on the route were fully occupied. This is the reason the city bus service recorded the highest daily earnings through the sale of tickets with a footfall of 1.14 lakh passengers," said Pradeep Chaudhari, the additional commissioner of NMC and CEO of the NMPML. NMC took over the city bus service from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on July 8, 2021, deploying 27 buses on 11 routes with an initial footfall of 5,000 passengers per day and an average daily income of ₹ 1.3lakh. There has been a significant rise in passenger occupancy over the past four years. The footfall has reached an average of 70,000 passengers per day, and income has increased to an average of ₹ 21 lakh per day, according to NMC officials. Most commuters regularly use the city bus service, with some opting for buses over personal vehicles to reach their workplaces. Additionally, the number of students obtaining bus passes at concessional rates has risen in recent months. NMPML operates a total of 250 buses across the city through two private agencies on a procure, operate, and maintain basis. In addition to 60 routes, NMC operates city buses in rural areas such as Trimbakeshwar, Pimpalgaon, Sinnar, Ozar, Sayyad Pimpri, Mohadi, Saikheda, and other nearby rural destinations, covering nearly 27 bus terminals, two bus depots, and 1,440 bus stops in both urban and nearby rural areas.

Shravan 2025 saw record breaking pilgrim turnout: Tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh
Uttar Pradesh's tourism department said the holy month of Shravan in 2025 witnessed an 'unprecedented' surge of faith and festivities across Uttar Pradesh, shattering all previous records in religious tourism. The department stated that at Lucknow's famed Mankameshwar Temple, daily pilgrim numbers rose from an average of 5,000–6,000 to over 15,000–20,000 during Shravan. At Budheshwar Temple, footfall crossed 20,000 every Monday and Wednesday. Barabanki's Lodheswar Mahadev Temple welcomed nearly 1.2 million devotees, with Mondays drawing up to 300,000 people. Bagpat's Shravan Mela attracted approximately 1.4 million visitors, with over 500,000 arriving in a single day. More than 100,000 kanwariyas carried Ganga water from Hapur's Garhmukteshwar Ghat, while Lakhimpur Kheri's Gola Gokaran Nath Temple saw between 800,000 and 1 million visitors. "Varanasi's Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham remained the crown jewel of Shravan celebrations. Estimates suggest footfall rose over 10% compared to last year, averaging 70,000–82,000 visitors daily, peaking on Mondays. The increase reflects not only the city's spiritual magnetism but also the state's successful efforts in facilities and crowd management," the state's tourism department said in a statement. According to July 2025 figures from the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, Shravan month saw a massive upswing in tourism-linked activity in Lucknow. Around 350,000 tourists stayed at hotels, including nearly 5,000 foreign visitors. Traditional fairs drew over 604,000 people, while cultural events and festivals saw participation from about 49,200 and 16,700 visitors respectively. Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said Shravan 2025 has gone down as a 'golden chapter' in Uttar Pradesh's religious, cultural, and economic life. "Record-breaking pilgrim turnout has reaffirmed that UP is India's foremost religious tourism hub. We ensured that every devotee enjoyed an uninterrupted, safe, and fulfilling experience while significantly strengthening infrastructure at pilgrimage sites," he added.
