Coolie box office prediction: Tamil cinema's biggest Rs 1,000 crore gamble begins

India Today14 hours ago
Superstar Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' rampage is all set to begin! As the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial is poised to mark its arrival in theatres on August 14, the excitement and euphoria are unmatched. Ever since the makers announced the cast, many have been pegging 'Coolie' as Tamil cinema's first-ever Rs 1,000-crore grosser. With three days left for release, 'Coolie' has already crossed Rs 50 crore in pre-sales. Trade analysts predict that the film could make Rs 100-150 crore globally on its opening day. India Today Digital exclusively spoke to trade analysts in Chennai and Mumbai to gauge 'Coolie's' Rs 1,000-crore gamble and its performance across India and overseas.advertisement'COOLIE' LIKELY TO OPEN AT RS 150-CRORE GLOBALLYSuperstar Rajinikanth's 'Coolie' is already smashing advance booking records. According to trade analyst Ramesh Bala, the film has grossed Rs 65 crore so far. "With three more days to go, 'Coolie' will easily cross Rs 100 crore in India and open at Rs 150 crore globally. The buzz surrounding the film is exceptional and is only increasing with each passing day," Bala told IndiaToday.in. 'COOLIE'S' RS 1,000-CRORE MARCH BEGINSWill 'Coolie' become the first-ever Tamil film to cross Rs 1,000-crore mark? Bala claims that the film has all the potential to become Kollywood's Rs 1,000 crore-grosser. But, there's a catch.Bala observed, "'Coolie' has the long weekend advantage as it is releasing on a Thursday followed by the Independence Day weekend. Hence, it could easily make Rs 350-400 crore in its first week. 'Coolie' could rake in Rs 700 crore in the South. However, for the film to hit Rs 1,000 crore, it has to work in the Hindi market."
Trade analyst Girish Wankhede exclusively told IndiaToday.in, "The buzz for 'Coolie' is strong in North Indian market as well. It has an edge as the advance booking kickstarted on Saturday (August 9). There's a huge excitement around the masala pot-boiler, which is loved by the masses. It is no doubt that the Day 1 collection will shatter all records. "WILL 'COOLIE' VS 'WAR 2' CLASH DIM THE CHANCES OF RS 1,000-CRORE MILESTONE?'Coolie' will face competition from Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's 'War 2', directed by Ayan Mukerji. Excitement around both films looks promising. Wankhede said that 'War 2' had a modest opening in terms of advance booking, but is likely to pick up in the coming days.Wankhede claimed that both 'Coolie' and 'War 2' are sure-shot Rs 500 crore-grossers. But, the advantage now lies with the Rajinikanth-starrer. Elaborating further, he said, "'Coolie' has its footprint in the interiors as it is a mass film and not a class film. Usually, there is an appetite for two films during long weekends. For a film to succeed, a film has to cater to the majority. Hence, 'Coolie' has the edge, while 'War 2' is more urban-centric." Currently, 'Saiyaara' and 'Mahavatar Narsimha' are dominating the Hindi box office. "'Saiyaara', which has grossed Rs 500 crore globally, is steaming out. But, 'Mahavtar Narsimha' is still performing well. But, when 'Coolie' and 'War 2' hit theatres, it will automatically be occupied by these two films. Both films are sure-shot Rs 500 crore-grossers," explained Wankhede.WILL WORD OF MOUTH FAVOUR 'COOLIE' IN THE NORTH?Ramesh Bala stated that 'Coolie' could dominate the box office in the South without any doubts. "But, it's potential to hit Rs 1,000-crore will depend on word-of-mouth. After two shows, if the word-of-mouth is positive, then everything else is a bonus," he stated.advertisementGirish Wankhede observed that 'War 2' is a film that will rely on word-of-mouth. "'War 2' will depend on word-of-mouth as it caters to urban audience. It's a niche market. However, 'Coolie' doesn't need word-of-mouth. It doesn't only have Rajinikanth, it also has Aamir Khan. 'War 2', a city-centric film, also has Jr NTR, a big advantage in the Telugu states. Eventually, films for mass consumption generate huge avenues. Even film has ups and downs, but for 'Coolie', it's all ups and no downs," stated Wankhede.'Coolie' has an ensemble cast including Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir and Aamir Khan in pivotal roles. Now, all eyes are on 'Coolie' and its big box office gamble.- EndsMust Watch

Son of Sardaar 2 is a reminder that audiences have grown up, Bollywood hasn't

Watching Son of Sardaar (2012) today feels like opening a time capsule to an era when audiences didn't question much, and comedy was often reduced to tripping over pickle oil or running into slapstick mehman nawazi. Back then, the Ajay Devgn–Sonakshi Sinha starrer, made on a reported budget of ₹40 crore, raked in over ₹140 crore worldwide. It even had a Salman Khan cameo and was considered a 'superhit.' But looking back, it's hard to ignore that its 'humour' was built on a wafer-thin plot and recycled gags. Riding on that misplaced confidence, the makers have returned after more than a decade with Son of Sardaar 2—only this time, the pandemic has changed the game. Audiences have grown sharper and far less forgiving. And judging by the box office struggle of this sequel, people are no longer willing to waste time or money on a weak, outdated script. In 7 days, the film reportedly made on a budget of Rs 150 crore, has earned Rs 32 crore. The sequel sets up Rabia (Mrunal Thakur), Saba (Roshni Walia), Mehwish (Kubra Sait), and Gul (Deepak Dobriyal) as Pakistanis. Ravi Kishan, replacing Sanjay Dutt due to visa issues, plays a UK citizen Raja who is fiercely Indian at heart, and has a soft corner for tales of Indian soldiers 'teaching a lesson' to Pakistanis. Mistaking Ajay Devgn for a soldier, he fixes his son Goggi's (Sahil Mehta) marriage to Jassi's (Ajay Devgn) fake daughter Saba. From the rishta-fixing day to the wedding, Raja, Tittu (Vindu Dara Singh), and Tony (the late Mukul Dev) 'test' Jassi's soldier skills—asking him to shoot bottles, operate a tank, and endure random mishaps. These set pieces are intended as comedy, but not a single scene manages to draw a genuine laugh. In fact, it made a family of six simply walk out of the theater. Not surprised. ALSO READ | Son Of Sardaar 2 movie review: Deepak Dobriyal runs away with Ajay Devgn-Mrunal Thakur's hare-brained comedy Ravi Kishan, known for his charm and comic timing, delivers lines like 'tits for ticks' and boasts, 'Maine 5 bhed se 15 lakh bhed kiye hai,' explaining his wealth. Even he cannot save the painfully bad writing by Jagdeep Singh Sindhu and Mohit Jain . Sanjay Mishra's character Bantu Pandey's transformation from hotel manager (in the first film) to milk vendor and lover of Ravi Kishan's wife, Premlata (Ashwini Kalsekar), makes no narrative sense. Chunky Panday's arc is equally bizarre—married to Rabia's sister, then to Rabia herself, and then abandoning her for a Russian woman, only to reappear for a few minutes at the end and be ridiculed for being Pakistani. Neeru Bajwa pops in at the start demanding a divorce, only to return at the climax to apologise—just in time for a random chandelier (or jhumar) to crash on her head, prompting audiences to mutter, 'Kuch bhi ho raha hai!' The film's humour mostly comes from watching talented actors like Ravi Kishan and Sanjay Mishra react to absurd situations rather than the situations themselves. Sharat Saxena, for example, loses his third wife in a pole-dance accident and quickly introduces a new girlfriend to his sons without skipping a beat. While the sequence makes no sense, Ravi Kishan's reaction does. The absurdity peaks with a cameo from Rohit Shetty, who appears after Ajay accidentally blows up his jeep in a residential UK neighbourhood, without any police or neighbourly interference. Shetty uses the moment to announce Golmaal 5, and the film wraps up as if that were the highlight. Son of Sardaar 2 isn't just a weak sequel—it's a reminder that audience sensibilities have evolved. What passed for comedy in 2012 now feels lazy, outdated, and painfully forced. Despite Ravi Kishan, Sanjay Mishra, and other seasoned actors doing their best, the film is dragged down by an incoherent plot, cringe-worthy jokes, and random events stitched together in the name of entertainment. If the first film proved people could laugh at anything, the second proves they won't laugh at just anything anymore. Jyothi Jha works as a Copy Editor at the Indian Express. Mrunal Thakur finally breaks her SILENCE on dating rumours with Dhanush: 'I am aware...'

Mrunal Thakur finally breaks her SILENCE on dating rumours with Dhanush: 'I am aware...' Actress Mrunal Thakur has finally addressed the rumours linking her to Tamil star Dhanush. Speculations intensified about the possible romance between the two after they were spotted together on multiple occasions. The Son of Sardaar 2 actress has now come forward to clarify and state their equation. Mrunal Thakur REACTS to dating rumours with Dhanush In a recent conversation cited by only Kollywood, Mrunal dismissed the rumours lightheadedly, calling Dhanush 'Just a good friend.' She admitted she was aware of the chatter in the media and found the speculations hysterical. 'I'm aware that a lot of news has been circulating about the two of us being linked together recently. I just found it funny when I saw it.' She said. Adding to the buzz, Mrunal clarified that she didn't personally invite Dhanush to the screening of Son of Sardaar 2. 'Dhanush attended the Son of Sardaar 2 event. No one should misunderstand that. It was Ajay Devgn who invited him,' she explained, putting end to the speculations. How the buzz started? The rumours started ever since Mrunal attended the wrap-up party of Dhanush's upcoming film Tere Ishk Mein, helmed by Aanand L Rai. Moreover, the buzz intensified after the duo shared a brief moment at the Son of Sardaar 2 screening, where Dhanush was papped holding her hand. Gossips further fueled after Mrunal began following Dhanush's sisters on Instagram. Some reports claim that the two want to keep their relationship private, but Mrunal's fresh statements have put the rumours to the rest- at least for now. For the unversed, Dhanush was previously married to director Aishwarya Rajinikanth, daughter of superstar Rajinikanth. The couple, who have two sons, Linga and Yatra, mutually parted ways after 18 years in 2022.

Bobby Deol Talks About Kanguva Flop, Says He Wanted To Work With Suriya: 'Script Didn't Work Out'

Last Updated: Bobby Deol gets candid on Kanguva's box office failure, calls Suriya 'a great actor". Bobby Deol's second innings in cinema has been full of dark, intense villain roles – from Aashram to Animal and Daaku Maharaj. But his much-anticipated Tamil debut, Kanguva, co-starring Suriya, didn't quite set the box office on fire. 'I Did Kanguva For Suriya, Says Bobby Deol' In a chat with Faridoon Shahryar, Bobby revealed his main reason for signing the period action drama. 'I did Kanguva because I always wanted to be a part of a film with Suriya as he is a great actor." Bobby played the menacing Udhiran, who locks horns with Suriya's warrior prince Kanguvan – ruler of the island of Perumaachi in the year 1070. Earlier, Suriya had described how Kanguva director Siva cast Bobby for Udhiran's role. According to the 49-year-old actor, director Siva had watched Bobby only in the Celebrity Cricket League before and only some clips. Based on those works, the director decided to rope in Bobby as the antagonist's character. Suriya said that by the time Bobby was selected for the Kanguva, his film Animal had not been released on the silver screens. Bobby Deol's Honest Take On Kanguva Flopping Talking about the film tanking at the box office, Bobby didn't hold back. 'What can you do when the script doesn't work out? Sometimes I just want to be happy while shooting for a film. I want to be there because as an actor, I can grow," he said. Bobby Deol Hit Film Daaku Maharaj While Kanguva failed to click, Bobby had reason to smile earlier this year. 'I was a part of Daaku Maharaaj, which hit theatres in January. It was a big hit, and it was great working with Bala sir. He's literally the star of the masses." Apart from Suriya and Bobby, Kanguva starred an ensemble cast of actors Disha Patani, Yogi Babu, Prakash Raj and others. Karthi will also play a cameo role in this film. Studio Green and UV Creations have produced Kanguva. Bobby Deol Upcoming Movies The actor's southern journey continues with Jana Nayagan alongside Thalapathy Vijay, directed by H Vinoth. In Bollywood, he's part of Anurag Kashyap's Bandar and the YRF spy thriller Alpha with Alia Bhatt. Bobby Deol Cameo In War 2 Rumour mills are abuzz that Bobby Deol is joining the cast of the much-awaited War 2, which brings Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR together on screen for the first time. Despite buzz that Salman Khan's Tiger or Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan might show up in the end credits, sources say neither star will appear. Instead, the film will introduce Bobby in an all-new role. 'With War 2, Aditya Chopra will be establishing Bobby Deol to the Universe. It's an epic introduction to Bobby Deol's character, who is one of the main villains in the timeline going forward. Aditya Chopra is known to go against the tide, and instead of establishing his two female leads of Alpha – Alia Bhatt and Sharvari – he is going ahead by unleashing the negative force of the film, Bobby Deol," a source told Bollywood Hungama.
